A small series of C-glycosides containing the phenol moiety was tested for the inhibition of the β-class carbonic anhydrases (βCAs, EC 4.2.1.1) from Brucella suis. Many compounds showed activities in the micromolar or submicromolar range and excellent selectivity for pathogen CAs over human isozymes. Glycosides incorporating the 3-hydroxyphenyl moiety showed the best inhibition profile, and therefore this functionality represents lead for the development of novel anti-infectives with a new mechanism of action.

Two fosmid libraries, totaling 13,200 clones, were obtained from bioreactor sludge of petroleum refinery wastewater treatment system. A novel type of adsorbent was prepared by modifying bentonite with N-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The adsorbent was named CTAB-HACC bentonite. Its characteristics were investigated using thermogravimetric, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction. Twenty-one percutaneous neurolyses of the upper thoracic sympathetic chain were performed in 12 patients with CT guidance by a single injection of 1 to 3 ml of phenol at the level of Th3. Results were assessed after a follow-up period varying from 4 to 33 months. Three patients with hyperhidrosis had immediate and complete disappearance of symptoms, but only one patient remained dry. In 7/14 procedures done for Raynaud's disease symptoms disappeared or diminished. These long term results are competitive with surgery. Three transitory Horner syndromes and one pneumothorax occurred.

The urinary excretion of phenol, p-cresol, and indican was determined in 7 patients with the stagnant loop syndrome, 26 patients with coeliac disease, chronic pancreatitis, and partial gastrectomy, and 18 control patients.
