Visual symptoms are a common clinical manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS) and are frequently due to acute optic neuritis (ON). However, the entire visual pathway can be involved throughout the disease course. We describe the case of a young MS patient who experienced visual symptoms that were eventually found to be caused by retinal periphlebitis, an inflammatory process of the anterior visual pathway, which is common during MS, but rarely symptomatic. This case reinforces the concept that in all MS patients complaining visual symptoms, a complete work-up should be performed in order to r…

BACKGROUND: Pylephlebitis is a septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein due to an intra-abdominal infection in the drainage area of this vein.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented at the emergency department with fever, cold chills and a two-month history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with pylephlebitis without a clear infection site. Treatment consisted of antibiotics and anticoagulation. Two months after discharge she was again referred to the emergency department, this time with rectal blood loss. On endoscopy a cocktail …

The rate of infections associated with short peripheral intravenous catheters is thought to be very low, even rare. Approximately 330 million peripheral catheters are sold annually in the United States. Although the rate may be low, the actual number of infections could be relatively high, with most going undetected because of short dwell times and early patient discharges. A recent estimate reported as many as 10000 Staphylococcus aureus bacteremias from peripheral catheters annually in the United States. This integrative literature review identified soft tissue, bone, and bloodstream infecti

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) have supplanted central venous catheters (CVC) for the administration of intravenous antibiotics and total parenteral nutrition to patients in our hospital. From the literature, it appears that this change has occurred in a number of other surgical units. Accounting for the change are the expected advantages of low complication rates at insertion, prolonged use without complications and interruption, and cost- and time-savings.
METHODS: We have proceeded with a review of the literature to understand and justify this change in p

Various pathological circumstances, and especially: acute venous thrombosis, superficial venous insufficiency and post-phlebitic disease, may upset the conditions of venous circumlation. Among the major pathological processes that may thus be involved, one can underline: -- Venous obstruction, whose physiopathology is different in the acute thrombosis and in the post-phlebitic phase. Especially studied in this work are: the phases of the enry into the acute venous stasis, which may lead to venous gangrene -- the offset and non offset obstructive syndromes. The offsetting of a venous obstructio

In a double blind trial erythromycin was compared with a combination of ampicillin and amoxycillin for treating adults admitted to hospital with primary pneumonia. The clinical course of 42 patients treated with ampicillin and amoxycillin was similar to that of the 49 in the erythromycin group. Fall in temperature, symptomatic recovery and radiographic improvement were similar (two-thirds made an uncomplicated recovery). Infusion-related phlebitis was more common with erythromycin. Otherwise adverse reactions were unusual. The outcome was related principally to the cause of the pneumonia with …
