Mirror visual feedback for the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (type 1).

Mirror visual feedback was originally devised as a therapeutic tool to relieve perceived involuntarily movements and paralysis in the phantom limb. Since this pioneering work was conducted in the mid-1990s, the technique has been applied to relieve pain and enhance movement in other chronic conditions such as stroke and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1. This review describes how mirror visual feedback was first developed with amputees, its original application in CRPS, and how further research has demonstrated its potential benefit within graded motor imagery programs. We discuss t

Ocular prevalence: difference between crossed and uncrossed disparities of stereo objects.

BACKGROUND: Many observers perceive a horizontal offset between a stereoscopically viewed object and a reference object in the fixation plane, although both objects are presented along a single line that projects through the midpoint between both eyes. These observers weigh one eye more than the other when determining the visual directions of stereo objects. This unequal weighting has been called ocular prevalence. We considered that ocular prevalence might be asymmetric, that is, different for crossed and uncrossed stereo disparities. METHODS: We examined 11 subjects with normal eyes and a s

Visual target detection is not impaired in dyslexic readers.

In two previous studies we assessed a difficulty of dyslexic readers with letter string processing by using variants of the partial report paradigm, e.g., Averbach and Coriell [Averbach, E., & Coriell, A. S. (1961). Short-term memory in vision. Bell Systems Technical Journal, 40, 309-328] which requires report of a letter name in response to a position cue. The poor dyslexic performance was interpreted as evidence for a visual-attentional deficit of dyslexic readers. In the present study, we avoided verbal report by using a task which only required the detection of predefined targets (letters

Events before the flash Do influence the flash-lag magnitude.

The flash-lag effect occurs when a flash abreast of a smoothly moving object is perceived to spatially lag the moving object. The postdiction accounts of this effect assume either that the flash "resets" motion detectors [Science 287 (2000) 2036], or that position information is not computed for moving objects until it is needed [Trends in the Neurosciences 25 (2002) 293], the latter view having also been proposed by Brenner and Smeets [Vision Research 40 (2000) 1645]. According to these accounts, events occurring before the flash should not change the magnitude of the flash-lag effect. In our

Judgments of exocentric direction in large-scale space.

Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orie

Auditory response to a photic stimulus.

BACKGROUND: The photic sneeze response is a well-established clinical phenomenon in which patients respond by sneezing in an uncontrolled manner. This paroxysm of sneezing is evoked by a sudden exposure to an intense or bright light source. The pathogenesis of this response is apparently quite complex. Sudden exposure to bright light involves the optic, oculomotor, and trigeminal nerves, the autonomic nervous system and central brainstem functions. Anecdotal reports have suggested the photic sneezing response may occur as an autosomal dominantly inherited condition. However, such a familial pa

Coherent motion pops out during smooth pursuit.

Stimulus motion is a prominent feature that is used by the visual system to segment figure from ground and perceptually bind widely separated objects. Pursuit eye movements can be influenced by such perceptual grouping processes. We have examined the subjects' ability to detect small amounts of coherent motion in random dot kinematograms during pursuit. We compared performance on tests of coherent motion perception while subjects fixated a stationary spot or while they tracked a moving target. The results indicate that smooth pursuit can improve subjects' ability to detect the presence of cohe

The flash-lag phenomenon: object motion and eye movements.

An object flashed briefly in a given location, the moment another moving object arrives in the same location, is perceived by observers as lagging behind the moving object (flash-lag effect). Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of the moving object is rendered stationary by smooth pursuit of the moving object? Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of a stationary object is caused to move by smooth-pursuit eye movements? A disk was briefly flashed in the center of a moving ring such that the ring center was completely 'filled' by the disk. In this display, observ

Basic auditory dysfunction in dyslexia as demonstrated by brain activity measurements.

Although the generality of dyslexia and its devastating effects on the individual's life are widely acknowledged, its precursors and associated neural mechanisms are poorly understood. One of the two major competing views maintains that dyslexia is based primarily on a deficit in linguistic processing, whereas the other view suggests a more general processing deficit, one involving the perception of temporal information. Here we present evidence in favor of the latter view by showing that the neural discrimination of temporal information within complex tone patterns fails in dyslexic adults. T

Sustained response of pineal melatonin synthesis to a single one-minute light pulse during night in Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Previous experiments have demonstrated that short light pulses during the night suppress pineal melatonin formation almost completely for the remainder of the night. Here, the effects of a single 1 min light pulse during the night on melatonin synthesis during the following night was investigated in Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus). It is shown that the melatonin pattern during the consecutive night is suppressed to a greater extent than that caused by acute light exposure, indicating a very effective light memory of the melatonin-generating neuronal network, possibly a key to understan

Eye movement changes in albinism--a case report with electronystagmographic findings.

Albinism is associated with neural anomalies including foveal hypoplasia and aberrant optic pathway projection that result in a variety of oculomotor instability. We present a 38-years-old man with oculocutaneous albinism who had horizontal jerk-type nystagmus, which showed a reverse in direction by any extraneous light stimulation which was documented by electronystagmogram. The mechanism of the nystagmus in this case is uncertain. These findings in albinism have not been reported previously, to our knowledge, and suggest a defect in the visual pathway system.

Anticonvulsive activity of a barbiturate derivative HB-7 in a model of allylglycine-induced epilepsy in cats.

With the aim of characterizing further the anticonvulsive activity of the newly-synthesized barbituric derivative 2-hydroxylamino-5-ethyl-5-sec. penthylbarbituric acid (HB-7), we studied its effects on allylglycine-induced epileptiform electrocorticogram (ECoG) in cats under acute conditions. Pentobarbital (PB) was used for comparison. Allylglycine (AG) was administered in a dose of 100 mg/kg i.v. to all cats. The control animals were treated with AG only. HB-7 and PB were applied in doses of 20 mg/kg i.p., about 60 min after AG. Intermittent light stimulation (ILS) at flash rate of 8/s and 25

Optokinetic and vestibulo-ocular reflex responses to an unpredictable stimulus.

Horizontal plane optokinetic (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) eye movements were obtained from normal subjects in response to pseudorandom rotational stimulation. Results showed large intersubject variability in OKR responses. Typical OKR responses had approximately constant gain (Mean 0.65) over 0.02-1.5 Hz. Response phase was near zero below 0.1 Hz with increasing phase lags as frequency increased consistent with time delays of 180 ms (Mean value). Variations in OKR responses included declining gains with increasing frequency and phase lags consistent with time delays of 90 to 268 ms.

Single unit activity and visual perception of motion.

Extracellular recordings were carried out in the primary visual cortex of behaving macaque monkeys. Neurons were activated by moving a visual stimulus across their receptive fields during steady fixation and by moving their receptive fields (by visual tracking) at the same velocity across a stationary visual stimulus. Out of a total number of 123 cells studied, 111 were activated by the visual stimulation both during fixation and tracking. The remaining 12 cells showed good response during fixation and very weakened response during tracking. Our results show that a small percentage of striate

[Activation of epilepsy-typical potentials in the EEG (author's transl)].

In the case of seizures which are difficult to diagnose, the demonstration of epilepsy-typical graphoelements in the EEG confirms the suspected presence of an epilepsy. Activation methods are employed, since epilepsy-typical potentials may be even absent in established cerebral convulsibility in the routine wake EEG. The purpose of these method is the activation of epilepsy-typical potentials in patients, whereas the activation should not be so strong that those potentials may also be activated in healthy persons - since they can be provoked by a sufficiently strong stimulation in any individu

The effect of early astigmatism on the visual resolution of gratings.

1. Orientational differences in visual resolution were measured at a number of different luminance levels on two subjects with high astigmatism that had remained optically uncorrected until the age of 10. Because of their astigmatism both of these subjects see vertical contours more clearly than horizontal contours with the unaided eye.2. The measurements were made using sinusoidal gratings generated on the face of an oscilloscope with the refractive error carefully corrected with lenses and with the gratings viewed through 3 mm artificial pupils.3. Visual resolution was found to be much bette

Binocular summation of suprathreshold color.

Two eyes are better than one for detecting both achromatic and chromatic contrast, an advantage termed binocular summation. It is widely believed that binocular summation is mediated by neurons that sum the signals from the two eyes. While binocular summation for luminance-defined stimuli has been measured for both threshold and increment-threshold contrasts, those for chromatic stimuli have only been measured at threshold contrasts. Here we measured binocular summation for both threshold and increment-threshold contrasts defined along the black-white, red-cyan, and violet-lime axes of cone-co

The differential contribution of implicit and explicit priors during motion extrapolation.

Accurately perceiving the position of moving objects is a fundamental prerequisite for interacting with the environment effectively. However, the brain is inherently "late" in doing so. By the time it encodes the position of a moving object, the object has already moved. To compensate, the brain exploits motion extrapolation, inferring the present position of an object from its past trajectory. Motion extrapolation arises from complex predictive processes, which combine sensory information with implicit and explicit priors to correctly estimate objects' positions. However, how implicit and exp
