Differential effect of metabolic alkalosis and hypoxia on high-intensity cycling performance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion and acute hypoxic exposure on repeated bouts of high-intensity cycling to task failure. Twelve subjects completed 4 separate intermittent cycling bouts cycling bouts to task failure (120% peak power output for 30-second interspersed with 30-second active recovery) under the following conditions: normoxia (FIO2% at 20.93%) alkalosis (NA), normoxia placebo (NP), hypoxia (FIO2% at 14.7%) alkalosis (HA), and hypoxia placebo (HP). For the NA and HA trials, the buffer solution (0.3 g·kg of NaHCO3) was d

Predictors of bovine Schistosoma japonicum infection in rural Sichuan, China.

In China, bovines are believed to be the most common animal source of human schistosomiasis infections, though little is known about what factors promote bovine infections. The current body of literature features inconsistent, and sometimes contradictory results, and to date, few studies have looked beyond physical characteristics to identify the broader environmental conditions that predict bovine schistosomiasis. Because schistosomiasis is a sanitation-related, water-borne disease transmitted by many animals, we hypothesised that several environmental factors - such as the lack of improved s

Ecological Kinetics and Evolutionary Dynamics of Antibiotic Resistance in Complex Environments.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are common in natural environments, including the microbiota of animal and human hosts. The local physical, chemical, and biological conditions of environmental patches and matrices vary both qualitatively and quantitatively. Often, these conditions are found as gradients, creating intersections that can either facilitate or inhibit the spread and evolution of antibiotic resistance (AbR). Ecological kinetics (EcoK) describes how combinations of these conditions influence the abundance and transmission of antibiotic-resistant populations, as well as the mobile gene

The interrelation of sleep and mental and physical health is anchored in grey-matter neuroanatomy and under genetic control.

Humans need about seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Sleep habits are heritable, associated with brain function and structure, and intrinsically related to well-being, mental, and physical health. However, the biological basis of the interplay of sleep and health is incompletely understood. Here we show, by combining neuroimaging and behavioral genetic approaches in two independent large-scale datasets (HCP (n = 1106), age range: 22-37, eNKI (n = 783), age range: 12-85), that sleep, mental, and physical health have a shared neurobiological basis in grey matter anatomy; and that these rela

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with increased risk of stress fracture during Royal Marine recruit training.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to investigate vitamin D status and stress fracture risk during Royal Marine military training. Poor vitamin D status was associated with an increased risk of stress fracture. Vitamin D supplementation may help to reduce stress fracture risk in male military recruits with low vitamin D status. INTRODUCTION: Stress fracture is a common overuse injury in military recruits, including Royal Marine (RM) training in the UK. RM training is recognised as one of the most arduous basic training programmes in the world. Associations have been reported between serum

Randomized controlled trial using bosentan to enhance the impact of exercise training in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

In type 2 diabetes patients, endothelin (ET) receptor blockade may enhance blood flow responses to exercise training. The combination of exercise training and ET receptor blockade may represent a more potent stimulus than training alone to improve vascular function, physical fitness and glucose homeostasis. We assessed the effect of an 8 week exercise training programme combined with either ET blockade or placebo on vasculature, fitness and glucose homeostasis in people with type 2 diabetes. In a double-blind randomized controlled trial, brachial endothelium-dependent and ‑independent dilatati

Training distress and performance readiness: laboratory and field validation of a brief self-report measure.

Three studies were conducted to validate the Training Distress Scale (TDS), a 19-item measure of training-related distress and performance readiness. Study 1 was a randomized, controlled laboratory experiment in which a treatment group undertook daily interval training until a 25% decrement occurred in time-to-fatigue performance. Comparisons with a control group showed that TDS scores increased over time within the treatment group but not in the control group. Study 2 was a randomized, controlled field investigation in which performance capabilities and TDS responses were compared across a hi

Lisinopril Preserves Physical Resilience and Extends Life Span in a Genotype-Specific Manner in Drosophila melanogaster.

Physical resiliency declines with age and comorbid conditions. In humans, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) has been associated with attenuation of the decline in physical performance with age. ACE-inhibitor compounds, commonly prescribed for hypertension, often have beneficial effects on physical performance however the generality of these effects are unclear. Here, we tested the effects of the ACE-inhibitor Lisinopril on life span, and age-specific speed, endurance, and strength using three genotypes of the Drosophila melanogaster Genetic Reference Panel. We show that age-related decline i

The Effects of Neuromuscular Training and Additive Visual Biofeedback on Landing Biomechanics and Sensorimotor Brain Activity in Young Female Athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are debilitating, often requiring surgical reconstruction and prolonged recovery. Female adolescent athletes are at particularly high risk for anterior cruciate ligament injury and display distinct neuromuscular control patterns during jump landing that further increase injury risk. Neuromuscular training (NMT) designed to reduce injury risk can be enhanced with automated movement corrective biofeedback to improve neuromuscular control and landing biomechanics; however, the central nervous system responses to targeted NMT that underlie adaptive

Subjective recovery in professional soccer players: A machine learning and mediation approach.

Coaches often ask players to judge their recovery status (subjective recovery). We aimed to explore potential determinants of subjective recovery in 101 male professional soccer players of 4 Italian Serie C teams and to further investigate whether the relationship between training load and subjective recovery is mediated by fatigue, sleep quality, muscle soreness, stress and mood. A complete season for each of the four teams was recorded for a total of 16,989 training sessions and matches. Every morning, players rated their perceived fatigue, sleep quality, muscle soreness, stress and mood, an

Influence of a Field Hamstring Eccentric Training on Muscle Strength and Flexibility.

Muscle strength imbalances and poor flexibility are frequently described as risk factors for hamstring injury. Preventive strategies include eccentric exercises, but the influence of field eccentric exercises on these risk factors remains unclear. We investigated the influence of a field hamstring eccentric program on hamstring strength and flexibility. Twenty-seven amateur athletes were randomly assigned to an intervention (n=13) or control group (n=14). In the intervention group, participants were involved in 15 sessions of four eccentric exercises. Peak torque, hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio
