In this randomized double-blind crossover trial we compared the antiproteinuric effects of enalapril and losartan in six children with proteinuria and underlying renal injury. The primary endpoint was reduction in proteinuria during therapy. The study had two 8-week on-drug arms, with a 4-week washout period between. Baseline proteinuria was similar, enalapril 87 mg/m(2) per hour and losartan 77 mg/m(2) per hour. The mean reduction in proteinuria with enalapril was 48% (37%-57%) with a standard error of the mean of 3%; with losartan it was 31% (14%-52%) with a standard error of the mean of 7%.

A pilot study on environmental surveillance of poliovirus included one hundred ninety-six samples (drinking water, surface water, seawater and sewage), collected between 1996 and 1998 in different regions of Italy. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of albuterol in children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Thirteen patients (five with SMA II and eight with SMA III) were given oral albuterol for 6 months. There was a significant increase in myometry, forced vital capacity, and lean body mass between the baseline and the 6-month assessments (p < 0.05). Albuterol may have a beneficial effect in patients with SMA without causing any significant adverse effects. Larger randomized, placebo-controlled trials are needed to confirm this observation.

Fourteen patients with social anxiety disorder (generalized type), according to DSM-IV criteria, were treated with mirtazapine 30 mg for 12 weeks. Twelve patients completed the study. Two patients (14.3%) dropped out due to side-effects. Generally, mirtazapine was well tolerated. OBJECTIVE: Somatizing patients often report cognitive complaints but neuropsychological research on somatization is scarce. We investigated somatizing patients for functioning in different cognitive domains.
METHOD: Ten female patients with somatization disorder or undifferentiated somatoform disorder and 10 non-somatizing controls participated in neuropsychological examinations.
RESULTS: The patients performed at a lower level than the controls in tests involving semantic memory, verbal episodic memory and visuo-spatial tasks, and were slower in attentional tasks.

Earlier trials with acetylcholine precursors may have been disappointing because of underlying damage to striatal cholinergic neurons in patients with TD. Fractures of the scaphoid are most common in young men; immobilisation in a cast usually means a long period away from work and athletic activities. Early rigid fixation has been shown to promote a rapid functional recovery, but open reduction and internal fixation is technically demanding with the dangers of damage to the radiocarpal ligaments, the scaphotrapezial joint, and the blood supply of the scaphoid.
