Holstein × Gyr and Holstein are the primary dairy breeds used in tropical systems, but when rearing under pasture, feed intake, behavior, and performance might differ between them. This study aimed to evaluate the voluntary intake, nutrient digestibility, performance, and ingestive behavior of Holstein and Holstein × Gyr (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) heifers managed in a rotational system of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça). The experiment was conducted during the summer season throughout four periods of 21 d. Two 8-heifers (four Holstein and four Holstein × Gyr) groups, averaging 258.6

Stems serve as key determinants of plant development by connecting and supporting parts of the plant body, transporting nutrients important for long-distance communication that affect crop yield, and producing new organs. Nonetheless, studies on the regulation of stem development in crops are rather limited. Here, we found a significant correlation (P<0.001) between stem diameter (SD) and fruit size in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). We performed a genome-wide association study and identified a novel quantitative trait locus (QTL), SDR9 (stem diameter regulator on CHROMOSOME 9), that co-localiz

Triploid plants are usually highly aborted owing to unbalanced meiotic chromosome segregation, but limited viable gametes can participate in the transition to different ploidy levels. In this study, numerous meiotic abnormalities were found with high frequency in an intersectional allotriploid poplar (Populus alba × P. berolinensis 'Yinzhong'), including univalents, precocious chromosome migration, lagging chromosomes, chromosome bridges, micronuclei, and precocious cytokinesis, indicating high genetic imbalance in this allotriploid. Some micronuclei trigger mini-spindle formation in metaphase

Global climate change threatens the sustainability of agriculture and agroforestry worldwide through increased heat, drought, surface evaporation and associated soil drying. Exposure of crops and forests to warmer and drier environments will increase leaf:air water vapour-pressure deficits (VPD), and will result in increased drought susceptibility and reduced productivity, not only in arid regions but also in tropical regions with seasonal dry periods. Fast-growing, short-rotation forestry (SRF) bioenergy crops such as poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) are particularly susceptible

Diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms impair plant growth, leading to reduced crop yields. While the molecular mechanisms of plant disease response are well understood in annual herbaceous species, they remain largely unknown in perennial woody plants. Here, we found that PtoPHL3, a key transcription factor in poplar's phosphorus starvation response, showed significant expression changes after treatments with salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate, and inoculation of Dothiorella gregaria Sacc (D. gregaria) which causes poplar canker disease. Overexpressing PtoPHL3 conferred increased resis

New methods and algorithms are being developed for predicting untested phenotypes in schemes commonly used in genomic selection (GS). The prediction of disease resistance in GS has its own peculiarities: a) there is consensus about the additive nature of quantitative adult plant resistance (APR) genes, although epistasis has been found in some populations; b) rust resistance requires effective combinations of major and minor genes; and c) disease resistance is commonly measured based on ordinal scales (e.g., scales from 1-5, 1-9, etc.). Machine learning (ML) is a field of computer science that

Cytological observations of microsporogenesis in the allotriploid lily cultivar 'Cocossa' showed that viable pollen production could be attributed mainly to disoriented spindles, abnormal cytokinesis, and cytomixis during male meiosis. To identify the reasons why the allotriploid lily cultivar 'Cocossa' can produce aneuploid and euploid functional male gametes and can be used as the paternal parent in lily introgression breeding, we performed a detailed investigation of microsporogenesis using the conventional cytological methods. The allotriploid not only produced single pollen grains with va

Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is a persistent plant pest that is able to vector pathogenic viruses. Natural plant resistance to thrips has become a prominent breeding target in commercial crops. The main reason for this is the shift toward banning key pesticides used for controlling thrips infestations and the lack of effective alternatives. Despite this urgent need for crop plants that are resistant, or tolerant, to thrips infestation, the toolbox for studying genetic resistance to this insect is still underdeveloped. Essentially, there is a lack of robust protocols for the screening an

BACKGROUND: Arabinogalactan-proteins (AGPs) are a class of hydroxyproline-rich proteins (HRGPs) that are heavily glycosylated (> 90%) with type II arabinogalactans (AGs). AGPs are implicated in various plant growth and development processes including cell expansion, somatic embryogenesis, root and stem growth, salt tolerance, hormone signaling, male and female gametophyte development, and defense. To date, eight Hyp-O-galactosyltransferases (GALT2-6, HPGT1-3) have been identified; these enzymes are responsible for adding the first sugar, galactose, onto AGPs. Due to gene redundancy among the G

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) is a globally important legume crop. However, the scarcity of efficient molecular markers has hindered molecular breeding efforts and the protection of plant breeders' rights. In this study, we employed double-digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq) to characterize the genetic diversity of 19 cowpea accessions. A total of 791,621 SNPs were identified, of which 13,469 high-quality SNPs were retained after filtering. Population structure and phylogenetic analyses revealed that these accessions clustered into three distinct groups. To fa

Shanghai-native vegetable soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merril) landraces are valuable germplasms, but their systematic evaluation for agronomic and nutritional traits remains insufficient. This study aimed to assess their phenotypic and nutritional diversity to explore their potential for breeding and meeting dietary needs. Twenty-nine local landraces and one control cultivar ('Qingsu 7') were evaluated for key agronomic traits, yield components, nutritional traits, and isoflavone profiles, using hierarchical clustering, principal component analysis (PCA), and correlation analysis. Environment-sensitive genic male sterility is a type of male sterility that is affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Environment-sensitive genic male sterile lines are not only used in two-line hybrid breeding but are also good materials for studying plant-environment interactions. In this study we review the research progress on environment-sensitive genic male sterility in rice from the perspectives of epigenetic, transcriptional, posttranscriptional, posttranslational and metabolic mechanisms as well as signal transduction processes. While significant progress has been made in

Pig production contributes to environmental pollution through excretion of phosphorus and nitrogenous compounds. European pig production requires annual imports of currently 36 million tons of soya bean, because domestic plant protein sources often do not meet the required protein quality. Most of the mineral phosphate sources are also imported. It is therefore desirable to improve nutrient deposition efficiency through selective breeding, that is to realise similar growth rates and carcass compositions as currently achieved but with a lower intake of dietary crude protein or phosphate. For a

Hybrid RIB-9184 × RIB-15131 combines high yield (18.84 g plant⁻¹) with iron (46.16 mg kg⁻¹), zinc (38.86 mg kg⁻¹), and protein (11.91%); Fe-Zn correlation (rg = 0.82) permits simultaneous biofortification. Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br., syn. Cenchrus americanus (L.) Morrone] is a climate-resilient cereal with inherently high micronutrient levels, making it a priority crop for biofortification. Understanding gene action for yield and nutritional traits is essential for designing effective breeding strategies. Ten diverse inbred lines were crossed in a half-diallel design (Griffin

Mosla chinensis is a high-value medicinal plant with scarce genomic resources for precision breeding. Here, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of an alpine ecotype (Baiyunjian Reserve, 1,611 m above sea level) assembled via SMRT sequencing and Hi-C technologies. 93.46% of sequences were anchored to 9 pseudochromosomes with 99.99% accuracy, resulting in the assembly of the 444.26 Mb genome (contig N50 = 41.38 Mb; 98.7% BUSCO). High proportion of repetitive sequences (56.90%) and species-specific genome duplication revealed the species-specific adaptations of this ecotype. Multi-tissue

The level of salt tolerance of rice varies with the developmental stage. The information on the tolerance of rice at each stage is valuable for breeding and planning in cultural management to obtain the optimal growth and yield in salt-affected areas. The objectives of this study were to compare the salt tolerance and physiological- and yield-related responses at three growth stages of the salt-sensitive Thai jasmine rice, KDML105, with its genetically improved variety RD73 (a registered commercial variety) and TSKC1-144 (a breeding line), both containing Pokkali-derived salt-tolerant QTL. BackgroundCrop wild relatives (CWRs) are commonly used as a suitable genetic reservoir for plant breeding. They can be used for enhancing the tolerance of plant varieties to biotic and abiotic stresses. Studying the genetic diversity of related wheat species in Iran could be useful to improve different traits of bread wheat, since the country is one of the major centers of genetic diversity and distribution of Aegilops species. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the relationship among 48 Aegilops triuncialis accessions using three DNA marker systems, including start codon…

De novo genes originate from previously non-coding genomic regions. They provide an important source of lineage-specific innovation. In plants, these genes may contribute to adaptation, trait diversity and crop evolution. This review summarizes recent progress in plant de novo gene research. It first discusses major routes of gene birth, including transcription-first, open reading frame (ORF)-first and concurrent models. It also examines how nascent loci acquire regulatory control and enter existing biological networks. The review then summarizes their evolutionary features, including weak ear

Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit) are economically important fruit-bearing woody perennial vines but with a long juvenile phase, which slows plant breeding efforts. LEAFY (LFY) encodes a plant-specific transcription factor central to the reproductive pathway in many plants and its overexpression can accelerate flowering, including in some trees. We identified two kiwifruit LFY genes that are expressed in actively growing apical buds. Overexpression of AcLFY1 or AcLFY2 promoted flowering in Arabidopsis, but did not accelerate flowering in kiwifruit. Instead, branching at the lower nodes and chang…

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) threaten global food security. Although epigenetic modifications are crucial for plant immunity, how histone modifiers contribute to root-knot nematodes (RKNs, Meloidogyne incognita) resistance remains unclear. Here, using genetic, molecular and biochemical approaches, we investigated the epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms underlying RKN resistance mediated by the histone demethylase (HDM) JMJC1 and the MADS-box transcription factor TAGL2 in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). We identified JMJC1 as an RKN-induced positive defense regulator targeting H3K9me3
