OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to study the results of the medical workup in patients with amyloidosis of the oral cavity.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients diagnosed with amyloidosis of the oral cavity during the period from January 1971 to January 2001 at the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology and Dermatology of the VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, were included in this retrospective case study. In total, this series comprised 11 patients, 9 women and 2 men. The patients' medical workup and final diagnoses were traced by means of the medical records.

The aim of our work was to determine the strength of the association between C trachomatis infection and plasma cell endometritis. We report 2 cases of plasma cell dyscrasia presenting with significantly elevated serum CA125 levels. The serum levels of CA125 from these patients correlated well with their serum M-protein levels. One patient had an IgG-kappa type extramedullary plasmacytoma with the culture supernatant from lymph node plasma cells showing a considerably high level of CA125 activity. A 40-year-old man presented with a left optic neuropathy. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a contrast-enhancing mass along the course of the left trigeminal nerve and in the region of the left cavernous sinus with suprasellar extension. Hypothetical clinical cases were used to investigate transfusion-related decision-making. Three red cell, three fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and three albumin transfusion decision cases were administered by questionnaire to 228 medical staff. The transfusion decision triggers were identified and comparisons made between resident and specialist groups and between Melbourne and Sydney participants. A patient with essential cryoglobulinaemia who presented with polymyositis is described. Muscle biopsy showed intense plasma cell infiltration of muscle. Plasmapheresis produced a rapid resolution of the cutaneous manifestations of the disease, but little improvement in muscle strength. Oral steroids resulted in moderate improvement in muscle strength. There have been no previously reported cases of polymyositis in association with essential cryoglobulinaemia.

BACKGROUND: The POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes) syndrome and osteosclerotic myeloma (polyneuropathy and sclerotic bone lesions) may both be manifestations of plasma-cell dyscrasia, but the interrelation of these diseases is not clear. Plasma lipids and red cell lipids were determined in hereditary spherocytosis (HS), 15 unsplenectomized and eight splenectomized patients. Plasma lipids (cholesterol: total, free and high density lipoproteins, free fatty acids, and phospholipids) were markedly decreased in HS, especially in the unsplenectomized patients.
