Intimate Partner Violence and Women's Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Coping Strategies Among Women Seeking Help From the Police.

Many variables explain the link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and its impact on women's mental health. This proposition is mostly from samples drawn from battered women's shelters, batterer intervention programs (BIPs), emergency rooms, and medical clinics. We know little about the psychological well-being of women who report abuse to police departments. This study used data from case records of women who experience IPV and sought help from a city police station located in the southwest United States. These case records were examined to identify how sociodemographic characteristics o…

Efficacy of drug detection by fully-trained police dogs varies by breed, training level, type of drug and search environment.

Some recent publications claim that the effectiveness of police canine drug detection is uncertain and likely minimal, and that the deterrent effect of dogs on drug users is low. It is also claimed that more scientific evidence is needed to demonstrate to what extent dogs actually detect drugs. The aim of this research was to assess experimentally, but in actual training and testing environments used by the Polish police, how effective dogs trained by the police were at illicit substance detection depending on factors such as type of drug, dog breed, dog experience with the searching site, and…

Individual Differences in Self-Regulation Do Not Predict Firearm Skill Acquisition During Police Training: A Longitudinal Study of 205 Trainees.

Police firearm training requires perceptual discrimination, decision-making, speed-accuracy control, and technical motor execution under institutional evaluation. This retrospective longitudinal study examined whether self-regulation-related psychological characteristics predicted firearm skill acquisition during an official Brazilian Federal Police training program. Two hundred five trainees completed a 13-week firearm course with standardized live-fire assessments using the Four-Color Target Test. Impulsivity, perceived stress, and self-control were assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Sc…

Criminalizing homelessness: Longitudinal associations of police encounters and homeless sweeps with psychosocial health among the unhoused community in Los Angeles.

Cities across the United States are relying more on criminalization policies-including laws targeting behaviors deemed disruptive to public order, such as sleeping or camping in public spaces-to remove visible homelessness. How the enforcement of these policies impacts the health of unhoused people is unclear. The present study leverages monthly survey data from a prospective cohort of unhoused individuals in Los Angeles County (n = 731) to examine the longitudinal associations of experiences with police encounters and homeless sweeps on physical and psychosocial health. We estimated multileve…

From law enforcement to public safety: Police officer experiences of naloxone administration to reverse opioid overdose in New York City.

The overdose epidemic has reshaped law enforcement's relationship with public health, as police increasingly adopt overdose response measures, including naloxone training and use. This study analyzed 15 interviews with New York Police Department (NYPD) officers to examine their experiences administering naloxone in their duties. Naloxone was seen as facilitating a shift from traditional law enforcement to a broader public safety role, and officers noted its potential to improve public perceptions of police. However, tensions emerged as officers navigated dual roles in enforcement and health, w…

Community's perceptions of the police during COVID-19 in Harlem, New York, a predominantly Black community: Social and geographical dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous demonstrations protesting policing practices towards the Black community have sprung up across the U.S. in recent years, especially during COVID-19. We examined the community's perception of police and its association with social (e.g., a history of discrimination and community safety) and geographical (e.g., housing type and district community) factors in New York City. METHODS: An online survey of 393 adults in Harlem was conducted between April and September 2021. A 10-item questionnaire asked about police responsiveness, safety, and racism, with higher scores indica…

Personal radio use and risk of cancers among police officers in Great Britain: Results from the airwave health monitoring study.

Exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from mobile phones and other wireless devices has been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. With data from 48,457 police officers and staff enrolled in the Airwave Health Monitoring Study, we investigated associations between personal radio use and the risk of developing cancer using Cox proportional hazard regressions. Personal radio use and duration of use were derived by combining objective data on call duration provided by the Home Office and participants' self-reported data via gradient boosting methods. Across a median …

How we can protect the protectors: learning from police officers and staff involved in child sexual abuse and exploitation investigations.

BACKGROUND: Police officers and staff who work in child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) investigations are routinely exposed to traumatic materials and situations. Despite support services, working in this space can have negative impacts on wellbeing. This paper explores the experiences and perceptions held by police officers and staff involved in CSAE investigations in the United Kingdom, regarding work-related wellbeing support and barriers to accessing such support. METHOD: A sample of 661 serving police officers and staff working in CSAE investigations participated in a United Kingdo…

Cars dent, horse riders break: Analysis of police-recorded injury incidents involving ridden horses on public roads in Great Britain.

INTRODUCTION: Police-recorded road injury data are frequently used to approximate injury risk for different road user groups but a detailed analysis of incidents involving ridden horses has not previously been conducted. This study aims to describe human injuries resulting from interactions between ridden horses and other road users on public roads in Great Britain and identify factors associated with severe to fatal injuries. METHOD: Police-recorded road incident data involving ridden horses (2010-2019) were extracted from the Department for Transport (DfT) database and described. Multivaria…

Upper and lower musculoskeletal back pain, stress, physical activity, and organisational work support: An exploratory study of police investigative interviewers.

Police investigative interviewers in special victims' units have particularly stressing work conditions. Being few in numbers, with highly specialised competence, the health and well-being of this workgroup are key. This study explores the prevalence of muscular lower and upper back pain and stress and associations with physical activity and organisational work support among 77 police investigators. The police investigative interviewers reported high levels of physical activity. Compared to other police employees, they reported similar levels of musculoskeletal back pain, higher levels of uppe…

Sex differences in mental disorder symptoms among Canadian police officers: the mediating role of social support, stress, and sleep quality.

Police officers, and specifically women officers, report elevated mental disorder rates relative to the general population, which may be impacted by sleep quality, policing-related stress, and social support. In a sample of Canadian police officers, sex was indirectly related to post traumatic stress, depression, generalized anxiety, panic, and social anxiety symptoms through its relationships with social support and sleep quality, but not through policing-related stress. Sex was indirectly related to problematic alcohol use symptoms through sleep quality only. Differences in clinical symptom …

Risk Factors for Duty-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among Police Officers in the Mt. Ontake Eruption Disaster-Support Task Force.

Mount Ontake in Nagano Prefecture, Japan erupted on 27 September 2014. Many police officers were called in for duty as a disaster-support task force. We investigated the association between the peritraumatic situation and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in these police officers. In January 2015, a health survey (OHS) on disaster stress related to the Mt. Ontake eruption disaster support work was distributed to all of the police officers and staff involved in the disaster support. We analyzed the 213 participants who had PTSD symptoms following the eruption and no missing OHS data…

Seeking Help From Police for Intimate Partner Violence: Applying a Relationship Phase Framework to the Exploration of Victims' Evolving Needs.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive social problem requiring multiple levels of intervention across sectors. Women experiencing IPV often seek assistance from police. Such help-seeking efforts are frequently perceived as problematic by both victims and police. A deeper understanding of victims' needs than is currently evident in the literature is needed to facilitate an appropriate, victim-centered police response across a diverse range of victim presentations. Applying a symbolic interactionist and feminist perspective and guided by a constructivist grounded theory approach, this q…

Local audit: How tightly should we police antibiotic prescribing for urinary tract infection and how should we modify national policy?

OBJECTIVE: In 2010, our hospital, in line with National guidance, changed advice on antibiotic prescribing for UTI to reduce use of cephalosporins in favour of penicillins. We hypothesized that this change in policy would have no impact on the pattern of antibiotic resistance of the organisms causing UTI. STUDY DESIGN: Audit review of all urine samples sent to BWH from 2009 to 2013 and positive cultures showing Enterobacteriaceae were then tested for antibiotic susceptibility. RESULTS: There has been an increase in the resistance of both Co-amoxiclav and Ciprofloxacin since 2009. Co-amoxicla

Co-responding to mental health issues within the policing, health and social care services in the 21st century: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The Community Access Support Team is an initiative aimed at improving crisis response for people facing mental health challenges or trauma. It brings together policing, health and social care in a co-response team that offers compassionate, timely support, reducing the need for risk and emergency department visits. Co-responding has three core elements namely specialised call handling, a joint police mental health team, and a community support hub for follow-up care. This scoping review, which follows the JBI Methodological Framework, aims to explore and map the extent, range and n…
