Gut-microbiome composition, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and differentially expressed genes correlate with aggression in an ant.

Animals frequently display aggressive behavior, for example, when competing for food. Aggression is influenced by various extrinsic and intrinsic factors such as the microbiome and genetics. However, we currently lack understanding what factors cause animals to start aggression. Here, we use an ant species to test if chemical, microbiome, genomic, and/or transcriptomic traits correlate with the start of aggression and the reactions to it, namely reacting aggressively or peacefully. We found nine bacterial operational taxonomic units, mutations in two genes, and eight differentially expressed g

Single nucleotide polymorphisms affecting galantamine binding to acetylcholinesterase in Alzheimer's disease: a structural bioinformatics study.

Galantamine, an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor used for symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), shows substantial inter-individual variability in clinical response. Missense single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the AChE active-site gorge may modulate inhibitor recognition. In this computational study, binding residues were defined from human AChE inhibitor co-crystal structures and cross-referenced with dbSNP missense variation, followed by in-silico predictions of variant impact, evolutionary conservation and folding stability, and assessment of ligand engagement by

Impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms of immunomodulatory factors on treatment response and prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy characterized by poor overall survival (OS). The impaired function, altered phenotype, and abnormal distribution of T cells create an immunosuppressive microenvironment in AML, affecting the efficacy of chemotherapy. Studies have shown that differentiated monocyte-like AML cells can express various immunomodulatory factors, resulting in T cell phenotypic changes and the development of an immunosuppressive AML microenvironment. METHODS: Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of four immunomodulatory factors-HMOX1, TXNIP

Decoding the genetic landscape of juvenile dermatomyositis: insights from phosphorylation-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified genetic susceptibility loci associated with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Single nucleotide polymorphisms related to phosphorylation (phosSNPs) are critical nonsynonymous mutations exerting substantial influence on gene expression regulation. The aim of this study was to identify JDM susceptibility genes in the GWAS loci by the use of phosSNPs. We explored quantitative trait loci (QTLs) among the phosSNPs associated with JDM using data from eQTL (bulk tissues and single-cell) and pQTL studies. For gene expression and protein levels sign

Correlation of toxicities and efficacies of pemetrexed with clinical factors and single-nucleotide polymorphisms: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Pemetrexed is an efficacious multi-targeted antifolate with acceptable toxicity for non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (non-Sq NSCLC) and malignant pleural mesothelioma. Vitamin B12 and folic acid as premedication can reduce the frequency of severe toxicities of pemetrexed chemotherapy. However, adverse effects are frequent in clinical settings. In this study, we aimed to identify the clinical factors and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the toxicity and efficacy of pemetrexed chemotherapy. METHODS: This observational study was conducted from October 201

Comparative Investigation of Coincident Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Underlying Avian Influenza Viruses in Chickens and Ducks.

Avian influenza is a severe viral infection that has the potential to cause human pandemics. In particular, chickens are susceptible to many highly pathogenic strains of the virus, resulting in significant losses. In contrast, ducks have been reported to exhibit rapid and effective innate immune responses to most avian influenza virus (AIV) infections. To explore the distinct genetic programs that potentially distinguish the susceptibility/resistance of both species to AIV, the investigation of coincident SNPs (coSNPs) and their differing causal effects on gene functions in both species is imp

Dataset of single nucleotide polymorphisms of immune-associated genes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected nations globally leading to illness, death, and economic downturn. Why disease severity, ranging from no symptoms to the requirement for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, varies between patients is still incompletely understood. Consequently, we aimed at understanding the impact of genetic factors on disease severity in infection with SARS-CoV-2. Here, we provide data on demographics, ABO blood group, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type, as well as next-generation sequencing data of genes in the natural killer cell receptor family, the renin-angiotensin-a

Correlations between single nucleotide polymorphisms in obsessive-compulsive disorder with the clinical features or response to therapy.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder, in which the patient endures intrusive thoughts or is compelled to perform repetitive or ritualized actions. Many cases of OCD are considered to be familial or heritable in nature. It has been shown that a variety of internal and external risk factors are involved in the pathogenesis of OCD. Among the internal factors, genetic modifications play a critical role in the pathophysiological process. Despite many investigations performed to determine the candidate genes, the precise genetic factors involved in the dise

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms of the HIF1A Gene are Associated With Sensitivity of Glucocorticoid Treatment in Pediatric ITP Patients.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) plays a crucial role in both innate and adaptive immunity. Emerging evidence indicates that HIF-1α is associated with the inflammation and pathologic activities of autoimmune diseases, suggesting that HIF1α may be involved in immune dysregulation in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the HIF1A gene are associated with susceptibility to ITP and its clinical prognosis including incidence of chronic ITP and glucocorticoid sensitivity. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in COX2 Is Associated with Persistent Primary Tooth and Delayed Permanent Tooth Eruption.

Persistent primary tooth (PPT) is a prevalent clinical condition that occurs when a primary tooth is over-retained beyond the established period of its normal exfoliation time, remaining in the oral cavity. Many factors could be involved in the risk of PPT; therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the COX2 gene are associated with PPT. Children undergoing orthodontic treatment were screened. Orthopantomographs were assessed to evaluate PPT according to the Nolla stage of its permanent successor. The primary tooth was considered retained when

Dissecting the contribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms in CCR9 and CCL25 genomic regions to the celiac disease phenotype.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: Given their role in homing immune cells to the intestine, CC motif chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) and its specific ligand CC motif chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25) are interesting candidate genes for celiac disease. These genes are located in regions previously shown to be associated with or linked to celiac disease, but no investigations on their association with various celiac disease phenotypes have so far been conducted. Here we studied such associations of both genotyped and imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with either regulatory function or exonic location o

Single nucleotide polymorphisms of whole genes and atrophic gastritis susceptibility:a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Atrophic gastritis (AG) is one of the important precancerous lesions of gastric cancer. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are closely related to AG susceptibility. However, the research conclusions on the predictive potential of SNPs are inconsistent. The study aims to retrospect the association between SNPs of whole genes and AG risk by meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Up to April 29, 2020, a systematic literature search for the relationship of SNPs with AG susceptibility was performed utilizing PubMed, Web of Science and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure.
