In this report, we describe a patient with adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery, in which direct communication via a duct-like structure between the cystic lesion and the knee-joint synovium resulted in recurrent episodes of intermittent claudication and complete symptom-free intervals (intermittent claudication intermittence). This unusual observation could shed more light on the debated etiology of the disease. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of complete excision of the cyst along with the presenting anatomic connection with the knee joint.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical features and MR imaging findings of the ganglion cysts arising from the tendons and ligaments of the knee.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One thousand six hundred and twenty knee MR examinations that had been performed in a three-year period were evaluated retrospectively for the presence of ganglion cysts originating from tendons or ligaments. Clinical findings and MRI features of the lesions were noted.
RESULTS: Twenty-three patients had a ganglion cyst originating from a tendon or a ganglion, with an incidence of 1.4%. Six lesions were associated with the ante

We studied potentialities of MR-tomography (MRT) and arthrosonography (ASG) for diagnosis of Baker's cysts in patients with early gonarthros … relations between the frequency of BC and clinical synovitis. Both methods more frequently detected popliteal cysts and BC in subclinical synovitis.

Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) is a rare condition that typically presents in young healthy men with symptoms of claudication. ACD is characterized by formation of a mucinous cyst within the adventitia of a blood vessel, usually in the popliteal artery, causing compression of the vessel's lumen and leading to reduced flow and symptoms of claudication. We have presented a rare case of ACD of the common femoral artery in a young female patient that was treated successfully with resection and femoral vein graft interposition reconstruction.

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery is an uncommon cause of intermittent claudication in young patients. Several treatment options are available, oriented to either drainage of the cyst and/or arterial reconstruction. Endovascular techniques have been used in exceptional cases to treat this condition, mostly balloon angioplasty and only 2 cases of stenting, with mixed to poor results. We report the case of a 36-year-old female patient with claudication who was treated with primary stenting with long-term symptomatic relief and arterial patency.

A system for assessing symptoms (pain, stiffness, gelling) and signs (local temperature, effusion, tenderness, synovial swelling, popliteal cyst, crepitus) of osteoarthritis of the knee has been developed. The system has been assessed for intra- and interobserver variation using normal and osteoarthritic knees. Intraobserver variability is low for all indices but interobserver variability is high for physical signs. It is suggested that the components within this system, when applied by a single observer, may provide a reasonable framework for clinical assessment of osteoarthritis of the knee.

The lower extremities of 60 consecutive symptomatic patients were examined first by ultrasound (US) and then by phlebography. Deep venous thrombosis was found in 17 patients by means of venography. A hematoma was detected by US in six legs without thrombosis. A popliteal cyst was observed by US in five cases; one patient had a concurrent deep venous thrombosis. It was concluded that symptomatic patients with a negative phlebography should be examined by US for correct diagnosis and treatment, although US cannot replace phlebography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the ability of sonography to reveal Baker's cysts using MR imaging as a gold standard.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 36 consecutive knees in 36 patients evaluated with both MR imaging and sonography. Inclusion criteria included axial proton density-weighted or T2-weighted MR images, a sonography report that documented the evaluation of the popliteal region of the knee, and sonographic and MR images that were available for review. The MR images were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of Baker's cyst (fluid signal

BACKGROUND Cystic adventitial degeneration (CAD) of an artery is a rare disease in which a mucinous cyst is formed in the adventitia. The condition usually occurs in the popliteal artery, but in rarer cases in arteries of the forearm, where it may lead to symptoms caused by local swelling or arterial occlusion. CASE DESCRIPTION A 54-year-old woman was referred by her general practitioner for a wrist swelling. This was initially thought to be caused by a ganglion but after ultrasound and MRI, it was found to be CAD of the radial artery. The symptoms recurred after transcutaneous aspiration of t

Venous ultrasound imaging was compared with ascending contrast venography for the diagnosis of suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the femoral, popliteal and calf vein segments of 44 limbs in 44 patients. One femoral and one calf vein segment could not be imaged (1.5% of the segments examined), but during the same period venography failed in six patients because of an inability to cannulate a swollen limb. Ultrasound imaging compared with venography as a means of diagnosing DVT showed an overall sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 92%. The sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound imag

In case of a swollen leg, differential diagnosis includes deep venous thrombosis. After having ruled out a thrombosis by venography, other causes have to be sought. We report a case where massive swelling of the lower leg was due to the arthrographically proven rupture of a Bakers' Cyst. Had more emphasis been put on recording the patients history, time loss and diagnostic procedures could have been minimized.

Paraneoplastic syndrome is defined as a systemic malignancy producing prostaglandins or other substances that lead to various manifestations, syndromes or diseases. In the following report we present a case of a young patient complaining of bilateral Baker's cysts who ultimately was diagnosed as suffering from gastric lymphoma. Following subtotal gastrectomy the Baker's cysts disappeared with no specific treatment.

Different theories have evolved to explain the pathogenesis and the cell of origin of intraneural ganglion cysts. Reportedly only three cases of intraneural ganglion of the tibial nerve have been located within the popliteal fossa, and all of these were thought to arise within the nerve. The authors report a case of a recurrent tibial intraneural ganglion in which a connection to the proximal tibiofibular joint was demonstrated on magnetic resonance (MR) images and at surgery. Surgical ligation of the articular branch and evacuation of the cyst led to symptomatic relief, and an MR image obtain

The marked difference in acoustic impedance between bone and other adjacent soft tissues prohibits sonography from imaging internal architecture of joints and bones. Despite this, ultrasound is very useful in the assessment of many problems encountered in rheumatological practice. Sonography is unexcelled in its capability to rapidly distinguish between popliteal cysts and deep venous thrombosis. Additionally, ultrasound can readily evaluate synovial cysts occurring in unusual locations such as those presenting as a soft tissue mass in the thigh or arm. Because it is noninvasive, sonography is…
