Feeling angry about current health status: using a population survey to determine the association with demographic, health and social factors.

BACKGROUND: Feeling angry about their health status may influence disease progression in individuals, creating a greater burden on the health care system. Identifying associations between different variables and feeling angry about health status may assist health professionals to improve health outcomes. This study used path analysis to explore findings from a population-based survey, informed by qualitative descriptions obtained from focus groups, to determine the prevalence of health-related anger within the community and variables associated with reporting health-related anger. METHODS: A

Tuberculosis screening in an at-risk immigrant Hispanic population in Baltimore city: an academic health center/local health department partnership.

Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic and epidemic throughout the world. More people will die of TB this year then in any previous year in modern history. However, in the United States successful TB control programs have resulted in low morbidity and low mortality here. Globalization and immigration threatens this control potentially bringing the infection to a here-to-fore complacent United States. This article describes a unique partnership between a community health program of a School of Nursing and a local health department chest clinic to find, screen and treat a population of Hispanic immigrants

Systems-informed approaches to evaluating population health interventions: Reflections from three case studies.

There have been many calls for systems-informed approaches to evaluation. Population health interventions, which often focus on improving the upstream determinants of health through large-scale change, seem well-suited to systems-informed approaches to evaluation. The purported benefits and appropriateness of taking a systems-based approach to population health intervention evaluation have been extensively discussed, and there is a growing, but still limited, number of applied case studies that operationalised these calls. Here, we reflect on insights gained from recent experiences across thre…

Population-Specific Genetic and Non-Genetic Influences on Sleep Traits and Health Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Sleep traits, shaped by both genetic and environmental factors, influence various physiological conditions. Diverse data representing the U.S. population from the All of Us (AoU) Research Program - including electronic health records (EHR), physical measurements, genomic information, and wearable device data across ancestry groups - offers a unique opportunity to explore the interplay between genetic and non-genetic factors in sleep traits and their associations with health outcomes and disparities. This study aims to examine the associations between genetic predispositions to sleep t

How an inter-organizational network hub orchestrates collective leadership to advance population health.

Inter-organizational networks are increasingly used to address complex health challenges, yet little is known about how "hub" organizations at the center of such networks cultivate relational processes that enable network effectiveness. Drawing on organizational network and collective leadership theories, we examined the relational processes that a structurally central hub organization used to influences a multi-sector network. We used in-depth qualitative methods to study a local health department that served as hub of a network of over 25 organizations establishing new behavioral health cris

Preconception mental health and developmental vulnerability at school entry: population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression and/or anxiety (depression-anxiety) have been associated with developmental disruptions. Less attention has been paid to preconception mental health, which could also contribute to adverse outcomes. AIMS: To examine whether preconception mental health is associated with developmental vulnerability in children who were either exposed or unexposed to prenatal depression. METHOD: A population-based, retrospective cohort including 130 631 births to 108 340 pregnant people from British Columbia (Canada) between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2012, with child devel

Why population-based longitudinal studies are vital for mental health prevention and policy.

There has been an increase in the prevalence of mental health problems in young people worldwide for over a decade. Population-based longitudinal studies can help show why this has occurred and whether it will continue throughout life for the present cohort of young people. This in turn will guide the policy response. We discuss two recent articles published in Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry which highlight the value of longitudinal studies in understanding the causal structure of mental health problems. Australia and New Zealand have a rich tradition of longitudinal studies

Health risk behaviours, obesity, and gambling severity: findings from a nationwide population study.

Prior research on the relationship between health risk behaviours (HRBs), obesity, and gambling has primarily focused on problem gambling, while studies focusing on lower severity levels are scarce. Moreover, this relationship has rarely been analysed separately for women and men. This study aimed to investigate the association between HRBs, obesity, and the full spectrum of gambling severity in women and men. Cross-sectional population-based data from Healthy Finland Survey 2022-23 was exploited, including adults aged 20+ years (n = 28 154, response rate 46%, mean age 52 years). The Problem G

Cancer Health Disparities Affecting Glioblastoma Survival in Ontario, Canada: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The role of cancer health disparities in a non-screen-detectable, high-mortality cancer such as glioblastoma (GBM) remains uncertain. We investigated the association between socioeconomic factors and overall survivorship and receipt of adjuvant treatment among patients with GBM. METHODS: This population-based cohort study used linked provincial administrative databases in Ontario, Canada, and was conducted among adult patients with GBM who underwent surgery from 2006 to 2022. Our exposures were neighborhood-based material deprivation index, immigration status, and r

Poor child oral health and school absences: a population-wide data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Child dental caries is highly prevalent worldwide, with significant treatment costs, but its broader societal impact remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined associations between child oral health and school absences in Scotland. METHODS: Four population-wide data sets were linked at the individual level, where the outcome was part-day school absence during first primary school year across six academic years (2008/2009-2010/2011, 2012/2013, 2014/2015 and 2016/2017). Oral health was assessed using three metrics: caries experience, urgent need of dental treatment (

Exploring potentially morally injurious events and mental health in a UK representative population.

Introduction: Potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) are events which conflict with an individual's deeply held moral convictions and beliefs. PMIE research has focused on potentially at-risk populations such as military personnel. However, limited research has examined PMIEs and their association with mental health and functioning in the general population. The current cross-sectional study aims to explore the prevalence of PMIEs and associated mental health and functioning in a UK representative sample. The secondary aim is to provide an overview of the health and wellbeing of the samp

Considering challenges for the new Alzheimer's drugs: Clinical, population, and health system perspectives.

Recent approvals of amyloid immunotherapy drugs for early Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been highly controversial. In this piece, we consider challenges from the clinical, population health, and health systems perspectives to the role that the new AD drugs might be expected to play, now and in the future, in alleviating the morbidity caused by AD in the population. Clinically, short-term effects are small, adverse events are frequent, treatment regimens are burdensome, and, crucially, long-term effects are unknown. At a population level, there is always likely to be a trade-off between breadth…

Mental health services use among learning disabilities: data from a population-based study.

PURPOSE: People with learning disabilities have complex challenges and needs that differ from people without these conditions. Accessing needed health and mental health care may be affected by level of independence and severity of learning challenges. Our study examined factors and associations which impact help seeking and satisfaction with mental health care in a Canadian nationally representative sample. METHODS: Logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey- Mental Health (CCHS 2012) cross-sectional survey. We investi

Stochastic health risk assessment of aflatoxin M1 in cow's milk among Lebanese population.

This study quantitatively assessed AFM1 exposure through consumption of cows' milk in Lebanese adolescents and adults. Lebanon-specific, non-aggregated data on (i) milk intake and body weight - from an existing survey for adults and from a new survey for adolescents, and (ii) AFM1 occurrence in milk, were fitted to distributions and incorporated into a probabilistic model. Risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for milk consumers was estimated considering the incidence of hepatitis B virus in Lebanon and characterized using the margin of exposure (MOE). All subgroups' mean risk estimates, expr

Fetal alcohol syndrome and population level health care usage in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The literature indicates that youth with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) may experience high rates of both physical and mental health issues compared to youth without FAS. However, there is little population level health data available for youth with FAS, particularly for youth transitioning from pediatric to adult healthcare services. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare health care usage of youth with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome to youth without any intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD). METHODS: This study used a retrospective cohort design and population-leve

Feasibility of continuous smart health monitoring in pregnant population: A mixed-method approach.

The utilization of smart monitoring technology offers potential for enhancing health outcomes, yet its feasibility and acceptance among Hispanic pregnant individuals remain uncertain. This is particularly crucial to investigate within the context of apparently healthy individuals identified as low risk, who still face a 10% likelihood of complications. Given their frequent underrepresentation in healthcare services and relative lack of attention, improving the feasibility of remote monitoring in this population could yield significant benefits. To address this gap, our study aimed to adapt and

Patient-clinician digital health interventions for the hip fracture population: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with hip fracture often require extensive post-surgery care across multiple sectors, making follow-up care even more important to ensure an ideal recovery. With the increased adoption of technology, patient-clinician digital health interventions can potentially improve post-surgery outcomes of hip fracture patients by helping them and their caregivers better understand the various aspects of their care, post-hip fracture surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the available literature on the impact of hip fracture-specific, patient-clinician digital health
