The Pull-Out Strength of Laparoscopic Sacrohysteropexy and Vaginal Sacrospinous Ligament Fixation in a Cadaver Model.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to determine the biomechanical strength of laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy (LSH) and sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF) by evaluating their pull-out forces. METHODS: This study was conducted during a cadaver workshop in Taiwan, which allowed the participants to perform multiple vaginal and abdominal procedures for pelvic organ prolapse. The study focused on biochemical strength assessment of LSH and SSLF. Six fresh cadavers underwent LSH or SSLF using various anchoring techniques. LSH procedures used sutures and tackers to fixate to the sacral p

Health System Strategies to Improve the Uptake of Cervical Cancer Screening in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Systematic Review.

Globally, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the highest rate of cervical cancer incidence and mortality. Cervical cancer screening (CCS) is essential for identifying and treating pre-cancer and early-stage cancer. However, CCS rates throughout SSA are substantially low due to a multitude of health system barriers, including poor access to CCS services and limited skilled providers and or resources. The aim of this scoping systematic review was to identify evidence-based health system-level strategies addressing barriers to implementing CCS in SSA. A systematic literature search was conducted across

Clinical management of patients with hypertension and high cardiovascular risk: main results of an Italian survey on blood pressure control.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension management and control still represents a major clinical challenge for physicians, as well as for National Health Care Systems, since high blood pressure (BP) levels in treated uncontrolled outpatients are related to a persistently increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events. The Italian Society of Hypertension (SIIA) has prompted several educational interventions for improving BP control in Italy. AIM: To evaluate clinical attitudes and preferences of large community sample of both specialized physicians and general practitioners, included in an educational progra

Advances in Urinary Liquid Biopsy: A Review of Emerging Sensing Platforms for Early Cancer Screening and Diagnosis.

Early screening of many types of cancers remains limited by the invasiveness of gold-standard tissue biopsies and the poor specificity of traditional clinical biomarkers like prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Non-invasive liquid biopsies are the emerging alternatives. Urine is one of the preferred body fluids for liquid biopsy as it offers a rich, easily accessible and large-volume source of cancer-specific metabolites, proteins, nucleic acids, extracellular vesicles, and cancer cells. This review reports the recent advancements in urinary cancer (bio)sensing technologies, including mainly opti

Case Report of a Rapidly Progressive Indolent T-Cell Lymphoma of the Gastrointestinal Tract.

Indolent T-cell lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract (iTCL-GI) is a relatively newly recognized disease entity. iTCL-GI was first proposed by Perry et al. in 2013, before it was formally incorporated as a distinct disease category in the fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Hematolymphoid Tumors: Lymphoid Neoplasms in 2022. Although the prognosis of iTCL-GI is generally favorable, some cases may present with malignant transformation or severe clinical manifestations. Herein, we describe a case of iTCL-GI with a poor clinical outcome. An 85-year-old female presente

Laser Organic Synthesis of Trichloromethyl Radicals/Ions and Study of Subsequent Reactions by Droplet Mass Spectrometry.

In this study, we used atmospheric-pressure droplet laser-ablation mass spectrometry to elucidate the chemical pathways induced by UV-laser irradiation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) droplets containing various alcohols. We focused on the reaction dynamics following the laser-induced generation of trichloromethyl radicals (CCl3) and ions (CCl3+) in the microdroplets. Mass spectrometric analysis revealed that CCl3+ initiated sequential substitution reactions. With phenol, sequential substitution occurred, resulting in the formation of mono-, di-, and trisubstituted ions. Conversely, methanol an

The current advancements in chitosan nanoparticles in the management of non-surgical periodontitis treatment.

Because of the intricate interactions between bacteria internalization in periodontal cells and chronic inflammatory activation, periodontal disorders remain difficult. Furthermore, the primary cause of adult tooth loss is periodontitis, one of the most common dental disorders worldwide. The key to preventing periodontitis has been to reduce the development of bacteria and the generation of substances that eventually erode the tissue surrounding and supporting the teeth. Furthermore, there are several disadvantages to treating periodontitis with antibiotics administered systemically. A natural

Enhanced enzyme stability at the interphase of water-oil for continuous-flow olefin epoxidation.

The practical applications of enzymes often require their immobilization for multiple recycling or long-term running. However, practically efficient enzyme immobilization methods are lacking. Herein, we present an enzyme immobilization approach by engineering a porous "interphase" between water and oil around the surfaces of Pickering emulsion droplets. The designed "interphase" consists of a porous, nanometer-thick silica shell serving as a scaffold to incorporate enzymes. Within this "interphase", enzymes can simultaneously be in contact with enzyme-preferred aqueous microenvironment and the

Enabling biocontained plant virus transmission studies through establishment of an axenic whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) colony on plant tissue culture.

Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) and the diseases they transmit are a major detriment to crop yields and a significant contributor to world hunger. The highly evolved interactions of host plant, phloem-feeding insect vector with endosymbionts and persistently transmitted virus represent a tremendous challenge for interdisciplinary study. Presented here is the establishment of a colony of axenic whiteflies on tissue-cultured plants. Efficient colony establishment was achieved by a surface sterilization of eggs laid on axenic phototrophically tissue-cultured plants. The transfer of emerging whiteflie

A real-world pharmacovigilance study of FDA adverse event reporting system events for diazepam.

Background: Diazepam, one of the benzodiazepines, is widely used clinically to treat anxiety, for termination of epilepsy, and for sedation. However, the reports of its adverse events (AEs) have been numerous, and even fatal complications have been reported. In this study, we investigated the AEs of diazepam based on real data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) adverse event reporting system (FAERS). Methods: Disproportionality in diazepam-associated AEs was assessed through the calculation of reporting odds ratios (RORs), proportional reporting ratios (PRRs), Bayesian confidence

A Case Report and Literature Review of Adrenal Myelolipoma.

Adrenal myelolipoma is considered a benign neoplasm that accounts for 6% to 16% of adrenal incidentalomas, and it is the second most common incidental adrenal tumor after adrenal adenomas. They are usually asymptomatic; however, in the presence of symptoms, significant growth, or complications, open surgical resection is indicated. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with obesity and diabetes who experienced five years of left hemiabdominal pain, which was unsuccessfully treated symptomatically. A computed tomography scan revealed findings suggestive of pancreatic lipoma and a suggestiv

Metabolic and feeding adjustments during pregnancy.

Eating behaviours are determined by the integration of interoceptive and environmental inputs. During pregnancy, numerous physiological adaptations take place in the maternal organism to provide an adequate environment for embryonic growth. Among them, whole-body physiological remodelling directly influences eating patterns, commonly causing notable taste perception alterations, food aversions and cravings. Recurrent food cravings for and compulsive eating of highly palatable food can contribute to the development and maintenance of gestational overweight and obesity with potential adverse hea

Developing a real-time PCR assay based on multiplex high-resolution melt-curve analysis: a pilot study in detection and discrimination of soil-transmitted helminth and schistosome species.

With the push towards control and elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis in low- and middle-income countries, there is a need to develop alternative diagnostic assays that complement the current in-country resources, preferably at a lower cost. Here, we describe a novel high-resolution melt (HRM) curve assay with six PCR primer pairs, designed to sub-regions of the nuclear ribosomal locus. Used within a single reaction and dye detection channel, they are able to discriminate Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Ascaris lumbricoides, T

Self-discriminating fluorescent hybrid nanocrystals: efficient and accurate tracking of translocation via oral delivery.

The in vivo fate of nanocrystals is a controversial topic, i.e. dissolving versus integral absorption through the intestinal membrane. This is due to the lack of functional strategies to identify integral nanocrystals. In this study, the in vivo fate of quercetin hybrid nanocrystals (QT-HNCs) via the oral route is explored by physically embedding an environment-responsive probe in the crystal lattices of quercetin. The specific property of the probe is the water-initiated aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) ability, by which integral QT-HNCs can be self-discriminated. Instead of dissolving inst

Anterior colporrhaphy: a standard operation? Systematic review of the technical aspects of a common procedure in randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior colporrhaphy (AC) is considered a standard procedure and is performed all over the world. However, not a single step of the procedure has ever been truly standardized and the rates of failure show a wide range in the literature from 0% up to 92%. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the differences in technique and procedure worldwide. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search up to March 2016 using the MeSH terms "(anterior AND (colporrhaph* or colporhaph* or repair* or cystocel*)" using Preferred Reporting Items for Sytematic Reviews and Meta-A

The FAD synthetase from the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae: a bifunctional enzyme exhibiting activity-dependent redox requirements.

Prokaryotic bifunctional FAD synthetases (FADSs) catalyze the biosynthesis of FMN and FAD, whereas in eukaryotes two enzymes are required for the same purpose. FMN and FAD are key cofactors to maintain the flavoproteome homeostasis in all type of organisms. Here we shed light to the properties of the hitherto unstudied bacterial FADS from the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae (SpnFADS). As other members of the family, SpnFADS catalyzes the three typical activities of prokaryotic FADSs: riboflavin kinase (RFK), ATP:FMN:adenylyltransferase (FMNAT), and FAD pyrophosphorylase (FADpp). Howeve
