The Fragmented Picture of Social Care for Older People in German Prisons.

Older people in prisons are a vulnerable group with complex health and social care needs. German prisons have started to adapt to demographic changes and exemplary support services for older people are available in a few prisons, but a lack of age-specific support is widespread. National standards are needed to provide predictable conditions of imprisonment for older people. In order to achieve the goal of reintegrating older people into society on their release, more support is needed to help them age successfully. Expertise on aging should be used and fostered more widely. Palliative care se…

HCV Elimination in Central Europe with Particular Emphasis on Microelimination in Prisons.

In 2016, the WHO announced a plan to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. In this narrative review, experts from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia assessed the feasibility of achieving the WHO 2030 target for HCV infections in Central Europe. They focused mainly on HCV micro-elimination in prisons, where the highest incidence of HCV infections is usually observed, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the detection and treatment of HCV infections. According to the presented estimates, almost 400,000 people remain…

Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccination Among Frontline Workers in California State Prisons.

IMPORTANCE: Prisons and jails are high-risk environments for COVID-19. Vaccination levels among workers in many such settings remain markedly lower than those of residents and members of surrounding communities. The situation is troubling because prison staff are a key vector for COVID-19 transmission. OBJECTIVE: To assess patterns and timing of staff vaccination in California state prisons and identify individual-level and community-level factors associated with remaining unvaccinated. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from December 22, 2020, through June 30, 2021…

The Intersection of Abortion and Criminalization: Abortion Access for People in Prisons.

Most incarcerated women are of reproductive age, and more than a third of women will have an abortion during their reproductive years. Although women are the fastest growing population in Canadian prisons, no one has studied the effect of their incarceration on access to abortion services. Studies outside of Canada indicate rates of abortion are higher among people experiencing incarceration than in the general population, and that abortion access is often problematic. Although international standards for abortion care among incarcerated populations exist, there conversely appear to be no Cana…

Risk factors for suicide in prisons: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rates of suicide among people in prison are elevated compared with people of similar age and sex who are living in the community. Improving assessments and interventions to reduce suicide risk requires updated evidence on risk factors. We aimed to examine risk factors associated with suicide in prisoners. METHODS: We did an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of risk factors for suicide among people in prison. We searched five biblographic databases for articles published between Jan 1, 2006, and Aug 13, 2020, and one database for articles published between Jan 1, 1973, an

COVID-19-The Case for Rethinking Health and Human Rights in Prisons.

This article considers health and human rights implications for people deprived of liberty during the COVID-19 crisis. The health risks of incarceration for individual and community health, particularly in overcrowded and underresourced prisons and detention centers, are well known, but with the COVID-19 pandemic have become a public health emergency.Physical distancing in prisons is hardly manageable, and protective means are poor or lacking. Emergency releases have been shown to be feasible in terms of public safety but lack sustainability in reducing the number of people living in detention…

[Mortality and causes of deaths in prisons in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

Mortality in prisons, a basic indicator of the right to health for incarcerated persons, has never been studied extensively in Brazil. An assessment of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in prison inmates was conducted in 2016-2017 in the state of Rio de Janeiro, based on data from the Mortality Information System and Prison Administration. Mortality rates were compared between prison population and general population after standardization. The leading causes of death in inmates were infectious diseases (30%), cardiovascular diseases (22%), and external causes (12%). Infectious causes feat…

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists profile in infused papers seized in Brazilian prisons.

PURPOSE: Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a class of varied compounds that mimic the effects of natural cannabinoids found in cannabis. Because they have a wide range of diverse structures, they vary widely in their potency. The abuse of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in prisons was reported in many European countries and in the USA. In the present study, we have described the identification of SCRAs in 56 infused paper sheet samples, seized mainly in Brazilian prisons between 2016 and 2020. METHODS: The materials were seized by local or federal law enforcement and analy…

Barriers to Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence in One of the Prisons in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral medications have improved the survival and life quality of people living with HIV and turned HIV into a chronic controllable disease. However, the success of HIV treatment depends on many factors; patient adherence is one the most important indicators. In this study, we explored the potential barriers to an effective adherence antiretroviral therapy (ART) among the HIV-positive prisoners of Ghezel-Hesar prison, Iran. METHODS: To explore and identify the barriers toward ART adherence, a focus group discussion was held with six prisoners eligible for ART but rejected

Epidemic Situation of Tuberculosis in Prisons in the Central Region of China.

We aimed to investigate the epidemic situation of tuberculosis (TB) in prisons in the central region of China. Tuberculosis screening was carried out in two prisons in middle China. A sum of 3,459 prisoners accepted chest X-ray examination; 40 of them were diagnosed as active TB patients. The active TB prevalence (1,156/105) was significantly higher than that of the province and China's general population (P < 0.01). As for gender, TB prevalence in men's prison (1,589/105) was higher than that in the women's prison (946/105). Nevertheless, the risk of having TB in women's prison was much highe…

Food trust in low trust environments. Negotiating food trust in belgian prisons.

This article examines how food trust is negotiated in Belgian penitentiaries. The study of food trust in prison, provides a particular context where the process can be understood in a low trust environment, and framed within a wider debate about food trust that has focused predominantly on how confidence is constructed in the context of outside society. A qualitative study, based on 60 in-depth interviews conducted with prisoners (41) and prison staff (19) and participant observations in prison kitchens, was carried out in five Belgian prisons. The findings show first, that trust in prisoners …

Safer tattooing interventions in prisons: a systematic review and call to action.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide more than ten million people are detained at any given time. Between 5 and 60% of people experiencing incarceration report receipt of a tattoo in prison - mostly clandestine, which is associated with risks of blood-borne infections (BBIs). Although safer tattooing techniques are effective in preventing BBI transmission and available to the general population, there is limited knowledge about the impact of safer tattooing strategies in prisons in terms of health outcomes, changes in knowledge and behaviors, and best practice models for implementation. The objective of this…

A study of the connection between gambling and crime in Hungarian prisons.

In the following study, we examine the connection between crime and gambling addictions. In addition to examining the playing habits of 140 detainees prior to their imprisonment, we also study their demographic characteristics, and their relations.(2) We previously studied these correlations as a part of a data recording in 2009 (Tessényi-Kovács, 2011).(3) By the 10th of October 2012, the use of gaming machines was terminated in Hungary. Therefore, our survey has gained a repeated actuality, since a significant cause of addiction has disappeared from the market. We question whether this factor

Incident Hepatitis C Virus Genotype Distribution and Multiple Infection in Australian Prisons.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a highly diverse pathogen that is classified into seven distinct genotypes. Simultaneous or sequential reinfection with multiple HCV genotypes is recognized in high-risk populations, such as injecting drug users (IDUs). Multiple infection is of clinical concern as different genotypes have various sensitivities to current antiviral therapies. Therefore, a better understanding of the frequency of multiple infection and of the genotypes currently being transmitted is clinically relevant. An Australian cohort of IDUs (n = 123), identified with primary incident infection,
