OBJECTIVES: To assess different dimensions of age bias among rehabilitation professionals and to determine the effect of patient gender and behavior on these biases.

A retrospective review was performed of records for players who suffered fractures about the orbit during participation in officially sponsored activities of the National Football League from 1980 to 1997. Clinical information was obtained on 19 of 29 players who sustained orbital fractures. The most common signs and symptoms included decreased visual acuity (74%, 14), decreased eye movement (42%, 8), hyphema (37%, 7), and infraorbital numbness (21%, 4). In this paper ethical implications of parental participation in paediatric care are discussed. The paper is based on interviews with 20 parents, whose children were admitted and operated on at a paediatric surgery department in Sweden. Forty-three rescuers responding to a bus crash that killed 12 children and 4 adults and injured many more answered questionnaires at 1 and 13 months following the crash. Fifty-three physiotherapists working at professional soccer clubs responded to a postal questionnaire on the treatment of sprained ankles. Elevation, the application of ice and compression bandaging were commonly recommended for the first 24-48 hours followed by early mobilisation. A variety of other physiotherapy techniques were used and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs commonly dispensed. The application of these techniques to routine casualty practice is considered.
