The impact of radiation induced lymphopenia in the prognosis of head and neck cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Radiotherapy is a key part of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. Radiation induced lymphopenia (RIL) is a severe complication of radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic role of RIL in HNC patients. METHOD: We conducted a PRISMA guideline based systematic review and meta-analysis. The studies were identified on the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library from 2007 to October 2021. The quality of each study was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Form for Cohort Studies (NOS). RESULTS: There were 8 studies with 2,733 samples finally included in

Impact of a ketogenic diet intervention during radiotherapy on body composition: V. Final results of the KETOCOMP study for head and neck cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at risk of malnutrition, especially during radiochemotherapy. We aimed to study the im … easured weekly by bioimpedance analysis and analyzed using linear mixed effects models. Overall and progression-free survival was assessed during regular follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 7 KD and 21 SD patients completed the study and were eligible for comparative analysis. Chemotherapy was significantly associated with declines in all body composition parameters, while the …

Identification of a miRNA based model to detect prognostic subgroups in patients with aggressive B-cell lymphoma.

In order to differentiate prognostic subgroups of patients with aggressive B-cell lymphoma, we analyzed the expression of 800 miRNAs with the NanoString nCounter human miRNA assay on a cohort of 228 FFPE samples of patients enrolled in the RICOVER-60 and MegaCHOEP trials. We identified significant miRNA signatures for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) by LASSO-penalized linear Cox-regression. High expression levels of miR-130a-3p and miR-423-5p indicate a better prognosis, whereas high levels of miR-374b-5p, miR-590-5p, miR-186-5p, and miR-106b-5p increase patients' ris…

Radiotherapy in the treatment of extracranial hemangiopericytoma/solitary fibrous tumor: Study from the Rare Cancer Network.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The role of radiotherapy (RT) in the treatment of hemangiopericytoma/solitary fibrous tumor (HPC/SFT) is still under debate. We aimed at investigating whether radiotherapy can improve the results in patients operated for extracranial HPC/SFT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from patients with HPC/SFT, treated from 1982 to 2012, were retrospectively reviewed within the Rare Cancer Network framework. Actuarial local control (LC), disease-free survival (DFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated with Kaplan-Meyer method. Patient and tumor p

Single-organ pulmonary metastasis is a favorable prognostic factor in metastatic colorectal cancer patients treated with FOLFIRI and vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on the impact of single-organ pulmonary metastases on progression-free survival and overall survival in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Recognizing differences in prognosis and chemotherapeutic efficacy based on metastasized organs may help in optimizing treatment strategies. The exploratory study was conducted to evaluate the comparative clinical outcomes and prognoses of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer presenting with single-organ pulmonary metastases and treated with folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, and vascular endothelia…

Phase II study of intensive post-remission chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma: Japan Clinical Oncology Group Study, JCOG9402.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intensive post-remission chemotherapy for untreated patients aged 15-69 years with adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma in a multicenter Phase II study. METHODS: The chemotherapy regimen consisted of induction, post-remission and maintenance for 2 years. The primary endpoint was 5-year progression-free survival, and secondary endpoints included complete remission rate, overall survival and adverse events. Among 115 patients enrolled, 108 eligible patients [median age, 33.5 years (range, 15-69)] including 96 acute lymph…

Potential prognostic predictors of treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors for advanced endometrial cancer.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic predictors of immunotherapy in patients with advanced endometrial cancer remain unclear. The potential role of inflammatory predictors, including pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet scores, was investigated. METHODS: Between August 2018 and December 2023, 35 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Prognostic predictors were compared, and optimal cut-off values that exhibited the greatest discrimination for overall response, disease control, progression-free survival and overall surviv…

Risk factors for intravesical recurrence in patients with high-grade T1 bladder cancer in the second TUR era.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to elucidate risk factors for intravesical recurrence of high-grade T1 bladder cancer in the second transurethral resection era. METHODS: The analysis included 73 patients with high-grade T1 bladder cancer on initial transurethral resection. The median follow-up period was 49.2 months. Recurrence-free survival, progression-free survival and risk factors related to the presence of residual tumors or recurrence-free survival were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The pathological findings for second transurethral resection were pT0 36 (49%), pTis/a 21 (29%), pT1 13 (18%) and…

Cancer progression and survival rates following anatomical radical retropubic prostatectomy in 3,478 consecutive patients: long-term results.

PURPOSE: We updated a long-term cancer control outcome in a large anatomical radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) series. We also evaluated the perioperative parameters that predict cancer specific outcomes following surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From May 1983 to February 2003, 1 surgeon (WJC) performed RRP in 3,478 consecutive men. Patients were followed with semiannual serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests and annual digital rectal examinations. Event-free survival at 12 months is a strong surrogate endpoint for stage 1 diffuse large B cell lymphoma: a report from Nation Wide Registry Thai Lymphoma Study Group.

Event-free survival at 12 months (EFS12) is a surrogate endpoint for long-term outcomes in many histologic lymphoma subtypes. However, most reports have primarily investigated the implication of EFS12 in advanced-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). There are limited data regarding the significance of EFS12 in early-stage NHL. Herein, we evaluated the prognostic significance of EFS12 in patients with stage 1 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Out of 282 patients with stage 1 DLBCL who received intensive therapy, 227 (80.5%) achieved EFS12. The 4-year overall survival (OS) was 91.4% and 4.0% f

Outcomes of chemotherapy/chemoradiation vs. R2 surgical debulking vs. palliative care in nonresectable locally recurrent rectal cancer.

Locally recurrent rectal cancer is resected with clear margins in only 50% of cases, and these patients achieve a three-year survival rate of 50%.
