In vitro and in silico methods for the biomechanical assessment of osseointegrated transfemoral prostheses: a systematic review.

The amputee population according to the World-Health-Organization is about 40 million. However, there is a high abandon rate of socket prostheses for the lower limb (25%-57%). The direct connection between the external prosthesis and the patient's bone makes osseointegrated prostheses for transfemoral amputees advantageous (e.g., improvement of the motor control) compared to socket prostheses, which are currently the gold standard. However, similarly to other uncemented prostheses, the osseointegrated ones are at risk of aseptic loosening and adverse bone remodelling caused by stress-shielding

Comparison of results of different types of knee arthroplasties.

We summarise our experience gained with knee arthroplasties over 18 years. Between 1976 and 1994 1103 knee arthroplasties (1044 primary cases, 59 revisions) were performed at the Orthopaedic Department of the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy in Budapest, Hungary. The diagnoses were osteoarthritis (OA) in 50.9%, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in 40.7% and other causes in 8.4%. The average age of the patients at the time of the operation was 57.6 years (range 14-81 years). The types of primary implant were as follows: 60 constrained (hinge) prostheses, 876 unconstrained (sledge) p

Synthetic hydroxyapatite-based integrated orbital implants: a human pilot trial.

PURPOSE: Orbital implants are used as fillers following enucleation or evisceration surgeries to replace the lost volume for better cosmesis and motility of the artificial eye. Over the last decade porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) implants derived from the naturally occurring corals, are increasingly used. Recently synthetic HAp-based implants have been introduced. After fibrovasculrisation they have the added advantage of being directly integrated with the artificial shell, thereby increasing the motility to a great extent. The current study, evaluated the efficacy of two different models of synth

Long-term results of osseointegrated implant-based dental rehabilitation in oncology patients reconstructed with a fibula free flap.

BACKGROUND: Dental rehabilitation with conventional prostheses after microvascular jaw reconstruction is often unsuccessful because of the altered oral anatomy and the lack of adequate dentition for fixation. PURPOSE: This retrospective study evaluated the long-term outcomes of patients who underwent jaws reconstruction with a fibula free flap and subsequent rehabilitation with implant-supported prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 21 patients were enrolled; 108 osseointegrated dental implants, positioned on 21 fibular free flaps were assessed. Follow-up examinations were performed a

Strategies for rehabilitation management with implants in patients with down syndrome: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome (DS), caused by an extra chromosome 21, has a prevalence of 24.7 per 10,000 live births in Chile, the highest in Latin America. Individuals with DS commonly present orofacial and dental anomalies, complicating oral health management. Many depend on removable prostheses, which represent challenges in hygiene, handling, and adaptation. Dental implants are a promising alternative, offering improved stability and functionality. However, successful rehabilitation requires addressing specific anatomical, physiological, and behavioral considerations. This scoping review comp

Unveiling the safety landscape: A comprehensive review of the toxicological profile of facial aesthetic implants and biomaterials.

Exploring diverse biomaterials and implants in the ear, nose, and throat by understanding adverse effects and post-usage events. Literature was obtained from Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on original research studies, case reports, and case series spanning from December 2010 to May 2022. Our analysis underscores that the effectiveness of cochlear implants (CIs) relies on factors such as biocompatibility, anti-inflammatory measures, and fibrosis reduction. Although silicone is employed in otologic applications, allergic reactions lead

Prosthetic factors influencing the prevalence of peri-implant diseases and marginal bone loss in static computer-assisted implant sites: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence indicates a possible link between the design of the implant-abutment-prosthesis complex and the development of peri-implant diseases. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between implant and prosthetic factors and the prevalence of peri-implant diseases and peri-implant marginal bone loss in patients treated with static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 115 patients with 417 dental implants, all placed using a standardized sCAIS protocol and with more than 1 year of loading. Each impl

Clinical and Prosthetic Outcomes of Titanium Zirconium Versus PEEK Composite Maxillary Fixed Prostheses Opposing Distal Extension Partial Dentures: Comparative Clinical Study.

OBJECTIVES: Titanium and zirconia are commonly used materials for implant frameworks. The selection of prosthetic material influences the load-bearing capacity of fixed dental prostheses and plays a critical role in the longevity of implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (ISFDPs) by affecting stress transmission during the chewing cycle. PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical results, prosthetic results, and patient satisfaction associated with fixed prostheses fabricated from polyetheretherketone and titanium-zirconia, supported by six maxillary implants and opposed by mandibular distal extension

Maxillary and mandibular complete-arch implant rehabilitation using a complete digital workflow: A case report.

This article summarizes the clinical steps involved in maxillary and mandibular complete-arch implant rehabilitation using a complete digital workflow. The maxillary arch was recorded using the double digital scan technique, and the mandibular arch using the triple digital scan technique. The digital protocol used in this case report allowed the recording of implant positions via scan bodies, soft tissues, and, most importantly, the interocclusal relationship in the same visit. A new technique for mandibular digital scan was described that uses soft tissue landmarks by creating windows in the

Radiographic evaluation of linear wear of bipolar hemiarthroplasty devices in vivo.

BACKGROUND: The indications for bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) have been narrowing as those for total hip arthroplasty (THA) have been expanding in cases of femoral neck fracture and initial stages of osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH). It is difficult to measure wear in vivo after BHA because the equipment used has a dual bearing system with an inner head inside a metal outer cup. The present study aimed to (1) use a roentgenograph to measure linear wear in vivo after BHA with different acetabular conditions around the bipolar cup, and (2) compare the linear wear of polyethylene between int

Acute thrombosis of prosthetic valves: a multivariate analysis of the risk factors for a lifethreatening event.

In 3231 prosthetic valves implanted between January 1975 and November 1990, we observed 61 cases of prosthetic obstruction of biological origin with clinical and laboratory findings of severe functional impairment which required surgery as emergency treatment. The hospital mortality was 19.67% (12/61). The obstruction was due to a primary thrombosis in all 5 bioprostheses which were not anticoagulated and in 11/56 (19.64%) mechanical prostheses of which 3 were not anticoagulated and 4 were not properly anticoagulated. The obstruction was due to fibrous tissue overgrowth in the other 45 mechani

Universal 2 total wrist arthroplasty for the salvage of failed Biaxial total wrist arthroplasty.

Universal 2 implants may be an alternative to total wrist arthrodesis for the salvage of failed Biaxial total wrist prostheses. We assessed 40 Universal 2 revision implants retrospectively. Fourteen of these wrists were converted to total wrist arthrodeses, and two wrists received a third total wrist arthroplasty after a mean period of 5.5 years. Twenty-four of the Universal 2 implants that remained in situ after a mean follow-up of 9 years (range 4 to 13 years) were re-examined. Sixteen functioned satisfactorily. Zygoma implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with a maxillary defect.

This clinical report describes the successful management of a patient who underwent extensive resection of a maxillary cancer, by introduction of a maxillary obturator prosthesis using zygoma implants. The patient was a 57-year-old man with cancer of the upper anterior gingiva. The maxillary bone in the affected region had been extensively excised by radical surgery. Owing to loss of teeth retaining the denture, the existing prosthesis was unstable, and the patient experienced severe speech and mastication disorders. Four zygoma implants (two on each side), and two conventional dental implants

Research: Recovery of Microorganisms in Nonsterile, Reusable, Loaned Orthopedic Implants.

Currently, there are two orthopedic implant types: (1) Sterile implants (e.g., joint prostheses) are distributed in a ready-for-use sterile fashion, and (2) nonsterile implants (e.g., plates, screws, Schanz pins, intramedullary rods) are processed by a healthcare facility's central sterile service department (CSSD). The current study evaluated processed implants for presence of coagulase-negative staphylococci, which was observed in 30% of the cortical screws, spongy screws, and Schanz pins (37 total samples) processed by a CSSD. Some samples were resistant to antimicrobial agents, thereby dem
