Mifepristone and misoprostol are globally used medications that have become disparaged through the stigmatization of reproductive healthcare. Patients are hindered from receiving prompt treatment in clinical scenarios where misoprostol and mifepristone are the drugs of choice. It is no exaggeration to emphasize that in cases where reproductive healthcare is concerned. The aim of this paper is to discuss the different indications of mifepristone and to delineate where the discrepancy in accessibility arises. For this systematic review, we included publications citing clinical trials involving t

INTRODUCTION: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the common anxiety disorders leading to impairment and burden. However, GAD remains the least studied anxiety disorder. There is a need for nationally representative epidemiological data of GAD to understand the current burden and plan the mental health policies and programs to attain their unmet needs. Hence, this study focuses on epidemiology, socio-demographic correlates, disability, and treatment gap of GAD from India's National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) 2016.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: NMHS 2016 was a nationally representative epid

PURPOSE: Illness stigma has been observed across previous outbreaks including Ebola, SARS, HIV/AIDS, and now COVID-19. Although both the stigma of having COVID-19 as well as mental health impacts of COVID-19 have been studied, limited research exists regarding the relationship of stigma and mental health in this population. Thus, the primary purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between stigma and mental health in adults with COVID-19.
METHOD: Adult respondents with a diagnosis of COVID-19 (N = 632) completed an online questionnaire distributed between April 17, 2020, a

BACKGROUND: Falls are a common occurrence in psychiatric hospital settings, however population-based research among individuals with psychiatric disorders, in particular bipolar disorder (BD) is scant. Thus, we aimed to investigate falls risk in community-dwelling women diagnosed with BD.
METHODS: Women with BD (cases, n = 119) were recruited from health care settings located in southeast Victoria, Australia. Age-matched controls (n = 357, ratio 3:1) without BD were participants in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study drawn from the same geographical region. Lifetime history of BD was identified by

BACKGROUND: For patients diagnosed with chronic illness, attitude towards treatment may play an important role in health and survival. For example, negative attitudes towards treatment have been related to poorer adherence to treatment recommendations and prescribed medication across a range of chronic illnesses. In addition, prior research has shown that attitude towards treatment assessed through a psychiatric interview predicted survival at 1 year after bone marrow transplantation with great accuracy (> 90%).
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between a

RATIONALE: New-onset psychosis in an immunosuppressed patient post-kidney transplantation (KT) is a diagnostic challenge. A broad differential diagnosis merits consideration; however, an approach to this differential diagnosis remains to be outlined in the literature. Also, when and how to modify the maintenance immunosuppressive regimen remains a significant area of controversy.
PRESENTING CONCERNS: A 23-year-old male, known for X-linked Alport syndrome for which he had undergone KT 1 year prior, presented with a 1-week history of disorganized speech, bizarre behavior, religious delusions, a

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, Asperger's syndrome (AS) and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). The new diagnostic criteria of ASD focuses on two core domains: social communication impairment and restricted interests/repetitive behaviors. The prevalence of ASD has been steadily increasing over the past two decades, with current estimates reaching up to 1 in 36 children. Hereditary factors, parental history of psychiatric disorders, pre-term births, and fetal exposure to psychotropic drugs or ins

OBJECTIVES: Syphilis has changed the course of history, shaped the path of medicine and had more influence on psychiatry than any other illness. This paper, part two of a two-part series, investigates the historical, social and cultural aspects of the interaction of syphilis and psychiatry.
CONCLUSION: By the end of the 19th century, social changes such as population growth, mass migration from Eastern Europe and technological developments led to a great rise in syphilis. By 1900, it was estimated that 5-20% of the population of Europe and the USA had, or would have, syphilis. By 1914, there

OBJECTIVE: We addressed the relatively unexplored use of screening scores measuring symptoms of depression and/or anxiety to aid in identifying patients at increased risk for post-discharge DSM-IV Axis I diagnoses. We were unable to find such studies in the literature.
METHOD: Elderly veterans without recent psychiatric diagnoses were screened for depression and anxiety symptoms upon admission to acute medical/surgical units using the Mental Health Inventory (MHI). Following discharge, those who had exceeded cut-off scores and had been randomized to UPBEAT Care (Unified Psychogeriatric Biopsy

BACKGROUND: Syncope is a common disorder that is potentially disabling and affects both young and old. Once neurological, cardiological, and metabolic causes have been excluded, there remains a group in which diagnosis is unclear; some may have an autonomic basis. We therefore did a retrospective study on consecutive patients referred to our tertiary referral autonomic centres between 1992 and 1998 with recurrent syncope and presyncope, in whom non-autonomic causes, before referral, had been sought and excluded. The object was to find out whether autonomic investigation helped diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has increasingly entered psychiatric practice through patient-facing chatbots, self-help tools, and clinician-facing workflow support. Although prior research has examined clinicians' attitudes, readiness, and anticipated use cases, less is known about how frontline encounters with GenAI shape psychiatrists' interpretations and implementation priorities. Health care foresight also remains methodologically underdeveloped and has focused mainly on external signals, overlooking clinically consequential signals emerging from everyday practice.

An 85-year-old woman with late-onset depression subsequently developed persistent oral cenesthopathy. As antidepressant augmentation, low-dose aripiprazole improved both mood and oral symptoms, but oversedation and parkinsonism necessitated tapering and discontinuation. After discontinuation, oral cenesthopathy recurred without clear depressive worsening. Dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography showed reduced bilateral striatal uptake and 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine cardiac scintigraphy showed decreased uptake, with preserved cognition. In light of the clinical and ima

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is a remarkably promising treatment for substance use disorders and for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in particular. Research supporting psychedelics as a safe and effective pharmacotherapy for AUD and its comorbid psychiatric conditions dates from the late1940s and includes over 2,000 published studies. There are, however, challenges to the clinical implementation of psychedelics on a scale appropriate to a highly prevalent disease. Virtual reality applications can aid in meeting these challenges. Studies have shown that virtual reality simulations of psychedelic phe

Depression ranks among the most prevalent mood-related psychiatric disorders. Existing clinical diagnostic approaches relying on scale interviews are susceptible to individual and environmental variations. In contrast, the integration of neuroimaging techniques and computer science has provided compelling evidence for the quantitative assessment of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, one of the major challenges in computer-aided diagnosis of MDD is to automatically and effectively mine the complementary cross-modal information from limited datasets. In this study, we proposed a few-shot

Adolescents often experience negative emotions, such as depression and anxiety, due to rapid biological, cognitive, and social changes during this developmental stage. In recent years, the non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has garnered increasing attention, with rumination identified as a significant risk factor for its occurrence. This study established a moderated mediation model to examine the impact of rumination on NSSI among adolescents with MDD and its underlying mechanisms. The final research sample consisted of 1,601 adolescents wit

A primary goal of clinical neuroscience is to identify associations between individual differences in psychopathology and the brain. However, despite a significant amount of resources invested in this endeavor, few reliable neural correlates of psychopathology have been identified. A common suspect for this lack of success is the significant heterogeneity in symptoms observed in psychiatric disorders. However, this is not the only potential source of heterogeneity, as substantial heterogeneity is also observed in brain structure and function. Thus, for clinical neuroscience to identify reliabl

Anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (anti-LGI1) limbic encephalitis is a rare autoimmune neurologic disorder with antibodies against LGI1. It was first recognized as a disease in 2010 and represents the second most common cause of autoimmune encephalitis. Clinically, it is characterized by subacute changes in cognition, memory, and behavior, associated with hyponatremia and faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS). This report discusses a unique onset of anti-LGI1 limbic encephalitis where an elderly female presented with symptoms of new-onset panic attacks and rhythmic facial movemen

Depressive disorders are widely debilitating psychiatric disease. Despite the considerable progress in the field of depression therapy, extensive research spanning many decades has failed to uncover pathogenic pathways that might aid in the creation of long-acting and rapid-acting antidepressants. Consequently, it is imperative to reconsider existing approaches and explore other targets to improve this area of study. In contemporary times, several scholarly investigations have unveiled that persons who have received a diagnosis of depression, as well as animal models employed to study depressi

Weight-loss is an integral part of Huntington's disease (HD) that can start before the onset of motor symptoms. Investigating the underlying pathological processes may help in the understanding of this devastating disease as well as contribute to its management. However, the complex behavior and associations of multiple biological factors is impractical to be interpreted by the conventional statistics or human experts. For the first time, we combine a clinical dataset, expert knowledge and machine intelligence to model the multi-dimensional associations between the potentially relevant factors
