Visual perception in dyslexia is limited by sub-optimal scale selection.

Readers with dyslexia are purported to have a selective visual impairment but the underlying nature of the deficit remains elusive. Here, we used a combination of behavioural psychophysics and biologically-motivated computational modeling to investigate if this deficit extends to object segmentation, a process implicated in visual word form recognition. Thirty-eight adults with a wide range of reading abilities were shown random-dot displays spatially divided into horizontal segments. Adjacent segments contained either local motion signals in opposing directions or analogous static form cues d…

Three-Dimensional Representations of Objects in Dorsal Cortex are Dissociable from Those in Ventral Cortex.

An established conceptualization of visual cortical function is one in which ventral regions mediate object perception while dorsal regions … ed less sensitivity to object 3D structure compared with that of healthy controls. Consistently, in psychophysics experiments, the patients exhibited significant impairments in object perception, but still revealed residual sensitivity to object-based structural information. Together, these findings suggest that, although in the intact system there is considera …

Preperceptual and stimulus-selective enhancement of low-level human visual cortex excitability by sounds.

Evidence of multisensory interactions within low-level cortices and at early post-stimulus latencies has prompted a paradigm shift in concep … y of visual cortex. We combined transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the occipital pole and psychophysics for "neurometric" and psychometric assays of changes in low-level visual cortex excitability (i.e., phosphene induction) and perception, respectively. Across three experiments we show that structured looming sounds considerably enhance visual cortex …

Visual phenotype in Williams-Beuren syndrome challenges magnocellular theories explaining human neurodevelopmental visual cortical disorders.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder whose manifestations include visuospatial impairment, provides a uniqu … ls by using electrophysiology, confocal and coherence in vivo imaging with cellular resolution, and psychophysics. These mechanisms of impairment are related to the magnocellular pathway, which is involved in the detection of temporal changes in the visual scene. Low-level magnocellular performance did not predict high-level deficits in the integration of motio …

A reassessment of infantile esotropia. XLIV Edward Jackson memorial lecture.

Essential infantile esotropia is an early acquired, not a congenital, condition, although congenital factors may favor its development between the ages of 3 and 6 months. It must be distinguished from other forms of esotropia with an onset between birth and the first six months of life. The cause of essential infantile esotropia remains unknown, but advances in our knowledge can be expected from the rapidly emerging discipline of infant psychophysics. In analyzing treatment results, a clear distinction must be made between normal, subnormal, and anomalous forms of binocular cooperation. While …

[Neural Mechanisms of Evidence Accumulation Selection for Flexible Decision Making].

Multiple mechanisms are involved in flexible decision making, including relearning and the instantaneous switching of decisions depending on the environment. These mechanisms can be elucidated by integrating psychophysical, neurophysiological, and computational approaches. The flexibility of evidence accumulation necessary for instantaneous decision switching is supported by the mechanism of accumulating and discarding unnecessary information, which can be observed in the changes in decision-related activities in the LIP cortex as well as in other areas. The molecular mechanisms underlying the

Measurement of interocular delays with dynamic random-dot stereograms.

A psychophysical method of measuring interocular delay based on dynamic random-dot stereograms is presented. The measurement requires only about 2 min. The sensitivity of this method to detect differences in the transmission times of the two optic nerves is demonstrated in patients with multiple sclerosis and in healthy subjects in whom interocular delays were produced by using different luminance levels for each eye. This new method may be a useful and economic method for monitoring the time course of optic neuritis.

[Problems in obtaining a driver's license in remote areas].

Performance deficiencies were recorded in 22 rural subjects who had failed their driving license test three times. In a control group were 33 subjects with three failures, too, but of urban origin. The two groups showed no differences in psychophysical skills. The driving test showed that rural subjects pay significantly better attention to traffic signs and have better vehicle control. They were, however, less efficient in coping with complex traffic situations.

[How good are the correlations between contrast sensitivity and differential light sensitivity in the visual field center in optic neuropathies?].

Contrast sensitivity (CS) and differential light sensitivity (LUE) tend to deteriorate with increasing severity of the neuropathy. However, the correlation between the two psychophysical functions is low for the total number of optic neuropathies as well as for groups with different visual acuities. This fact is mainly explained by the range of scatter in LUE values. Moreover, visual acuity is much better correlated with CS than with LUE. CS and LUE represent different visual functions that may be processed by separate neural structures.

Pigmentary paravenous chorioretinal degeneration: fundus appearance and retinal functions.

A case of pigmentary paravenous chorioretinal degeneration initially diagnosed as retinitis pigmentosa is presented. The focal macular visual evoked response (VER) was normal. Both rod and cone components in the electroretinogram showed reduced amplitude with normal peak time. The psychophysical threshold in the dark adaptation was nearly normal in some parts of the retina and extremely elevated in other parts of the retina. Fundus appearance and retinal function studies suggest that the impaired area in the retina and choroid is localized in this disease.

Learned foveal representations, not gaze-mediated information access, underlie perceptual advantages for canonical face configurations.

Altering face feature positioning significantly impairs the recognition of identity, gender, and emotional expression. We evaluated the possible cause of these impairments in terms of three distinct mechanisms: (1) peripheral information loss due to foveated vision when diagnostic features fall distant from fixation, (2) suboptimal adaptation of eye-movement strategies to altered configurations, or (3) mismatch between the incoming face features and learned face templates tuned to upright configuration. In this study, we combined computational modeling and psychophysics to isolate the contribu…

Alpha rhythms in the left auditory cortex set the speed limit for speech comprehension.

Human cognition operates within distinct temporal windows spanning from very short to extremely long. Each cognitive function has its own processing speed range, beyond which performance deteriorates or even becomes impossible. Speech comprehension, as one of the most important cognitive functions in civilized societies, exemplifies this constraint: Performance declines markedly when speech rates exceed about 10 syllables per second. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this speed limit remain unclear. Here, by combining psychophysics, scalp-electroencephalography, transcranial alternatin…

Altered folate metabolism disrupts auditory function from neonatal vocalizations to adult perceptual precision.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate‐reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in folate-dependent one-carbon metabolism. While MTHFR polymorphisms have been linked to sensorineural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders in humans, the translation of early-life metabolic stress into long-term sensory processing and perceptual consequences has remained unclear. Here, we combined neonatal ultrasonic vocalization analysis, adult auditory-brainstem recordings, two-photon calcium imaging of the auditory cortex, and high-resolution psychophysics to map the effects of partial Mthfr deficiency across differe…

Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation improves sensory performance in humans: a randomized controlled crossover pilot study.

Accurate senses depend on high-fidelity encoding by sensory receptors and error-free processing in the brain. Progress has been made towards … d to cervical (tcVNS) or auricular (taVNS) branches of the vagus nerve while participants performed psychophysics tasks or passively viewed a display. Relative to sham stimulation, tcVNS improved auditory performance by 37% (p = 0.00052) and visual performance by 23% (p = 0.038). Participants with lower performance during sham conditions experienced larger tcVN …

EEG Spatiotemporal Patterns Underlying Self-other Voice Discrimination.

There is growing evidence showing that the representation of the human "self" recruits special systems across different functions and modalities. Compared to self-face and self-body representations, few studies have investigated neural underpinnings specific to self-voice. Moreover, self-voice stimuli in those studies were consistently presented through air and lacking bone conduction, rendering the sound of self-voice stimuli different to the self-voice heard during natural speech. Here, we combined psychophysics, voice-morphing technology, and high-density EEG in order to identify the spatio…

Our study opens the door to a new problem in the study of attention, perception, and psychophysics-judging the difficulty of different kinds of tasks. The approach we took to this problem, which relies on two-alternative forced choice along with modeling the basis for the choice, may prove useful in future investigations.

Functional Evidence for Memory Stabilization in Sensorimotor Adaptation: A 24-h Resting-State fMRI Study.

Adaptation learning is crucial to maintain precise motor control in face of environmental perturbations. Although much progress has been made in understanding the psychophysics and neurophysiology of sensorimotor adaptation (SA), the time course of memory consolidation remains elusive. The lack of a reproducible gradient of memory resistance using protocols of retrograde interference has even led to the proposal that memories produced through SA do not consolidate. Here, we pursued an alternative approach using resting-state fMRI to track changes in functional connectivity (FC) induced by lear…
