Schistosomiasis caused by infection with Schistosoma mansoni is a serious public health burden in 38 of the 56 districts of Uganda. This article reviews the initial experience of the national control programme. Launched in 2003, this started with a pilot phase with the main aim of utilizing the experience to formulate feasible and appropriate methods of drug delivery. Overall, 432,746 people were treated and coverage was 91.4% in schools and 64.7% in communities. The issues raised by independent evaluators included that most communities did not participate in the selection of community drug di

Before the 1999 bombing, Kosovo was among the poorest regions in Europe, with low scores on indices of health care. After the war, housing for much of the population is below even basically acceptable standards and health care is disrupted, with serious risk of epidemic diseases. Societal disintegration has led to high levels of stress. In Serbia, also a poor country, which already suffered from high levels of pollution before the war, large amounts of several highly toxic chemicals were liberated into the environment by the bombing. Targeting of electrical generating plant, water treatment fa

Genomic technologies such as PCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS) have greatly advanced public health surveillance, especially during COVID-19, by enabling detailed tracking of pathogen spread, origins, and variants. While PCR is vital for targeted detection, falling NGS costs have made large-scale, high-throughput sequencing more feasible, supporting broader pathogen monitoring-including the detection of vaccine escape variants and new strains. Applying NGS to wastewater offers valuable population-level insights but faces challenges such as variable sample complexity, the need for skilled

BACKGROUND: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, concerted efforts were made by provincial and federal governments to invest in critical care infrastructure and medical equipment to bridge the gap of resource-limitation in intensive care units (ICUs) across Pakistan. An initial step in creating a plan toward strengthening Pakistan's baseline critical care capacity was to carry out a needs-assessment within the country to assess gaps and devise strategies for improving the quality of critical care facilities.
METHODS: To assess the baseline critical care capacity of Pakistan, we conducted a s

Hepatitis C continues to pose a significant global health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where access to diagnosis and treatment remains limited. This perspective explores how integrated care models, featuring decentralization, task-shifting, and simplified protocols, can accelerate hepatitis C elimination. Drawing on case studies from Egypt, Rwanda, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Nigeria, we highlight key enablers such as political commitment, infrastructure integration, and public engagement. These examples demonstrate that scalable, cost-effective strategies can achieve

The current outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa is the worst so far. The unprecedented extent of mortality and morbidity in this outbreak has followed more from imposition of neoliberal economic policies on the countries affected than from the biological virulence of Ebola virus. The lack of vaccines and medications for Ebola virus disease is evidence that markets cannot reliably supply treatments for epidemic diseases. We attribute the current difficulties in containment chiefly to the erosion or non-development of the health and medical infrastructure needed to respond effectively

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices constitute a serious public health risk, affecting one-third of the world's population. Remarkable progress has been made to improve WASH; however, challenges remain, with rapid population growth adding pressure on WASH systems. This study explores the current state of WASH practices and diseases in Africa, identifies challenges, and proposes public health recommendations for sustainable implementation.
MAIN BODY: The staggering burden of WASH-related diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in Af

With the introduction of direct-acting antiviral drugs, treatment of hepatitis C is both highly effective and tolerable. Access to treatment for patients, however, remains limited in low- and middle-income countries due to the lack of supportive health infrastructure and the high cost of treatment. Poorer countries are being encouraged by international bodies to organize public health responses that would facilitate the roll-out of care and treatment on a national scale. Yet few countries have documented formal plans and policies. Here, we outline the approach taken in Rwanda to a public healt

The laboratory system in Liberia has generally been fragmented and uncoordinated. Accordingly, the country's Ministry of Health established the National Reference Laboratory to strengthen and sustain laboratory services. However, diagnostic testing services were often limited to clinical tests performed in health facilities, with the functionality of the National Reference Laboratory restricted to performing testing services for a limited number of epidemic-prone diseases. The lack of testing capacity in-country for Lassa fever and other haemorrhagic fevers affected the response of the country

India, a growing economy and world's largest democracy, has population exceeding 1.2 billion. Out of this huge number, 63.6% form working age group. More than 90% work in the informal economy, mainly agriculture and services. Less than 10% work in the organized sector; mainly industry, mining and some services. New service industries like Information Technology (IT), Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are increasing rapidly; so is the proportion of females in the workforce. The occupational safety and health (OSH) scenario in India is complex. Unprecedented growth and progress go hand in hand

Accurate death registration is one of the most fundamental components of an effective public health system. Mortality data provide critical insights into disease patterns, demographic transitions, healthcare needs, and social inequalities. In India, the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system and the sample registration system (SRS) collectively serve as the primary sources of mortality information. However, despite decades of efforts to improve registration completeness, substantial disparities continue to exist across states and union territories. Analysis of National Family He

Tetanus, a disease caused by the neurotoxin-producing bacteria Clostridium tetani (C. tetani), remains a serious threat, particularly among individuals who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. Although public health guidelines in the United States continue to recommend a well-established, multi-dose vaccination schedule to prevent tetanus, recent revisions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention webpage language on vaccine safety prompted renewed public discussion. Despite this, extensive evidence continues to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of tetanus immunization, and cer
