Relationship between lamellar sensory corpuscles distributed along the upper arm's deep arteries and pulsating sensation of blood vessels.

Vibration is detected by mechanoreceptors, including Pacinian corpuscles (PCs), which are widely distributed in the human body including the adventitia of large blood vessels. Although the distribution of PCs around large limb vessels has been previously reported, there remains no consensus on their distribution in the adventitia of the human deep blood vessels in the upper arm. In addition, the physiological functions of PCs located around the deep limb blood vessels remain largely unknown. This study aimed to elucidate detailed anatomical features and physiological function of lamellar senso

X-ray velocimetry and haemodynamic forces within a stenosed femoral model at physiological flow rates.

High resolution in vivo velocity measurements within the cardiovascular system are essential for accurate calculation of vessel wall shear stress, a highly influential factor for the progression of arterial disease. Unfortunately, currently available techniques for in vivo imaging are unable to provide the temporal resolution required for velocity measurement at physiological flow rates. Advances in technology and improvements in imaging systems are allowing a relatively new technique, X-ray velocimetry, to become a viable tool for such measurements. This study investigates the haemodynamics o

Evolution of the Fontan-Kreutzer procedure.

The surgical techniques used to construct the Fontan-Kreutzer circulation have evolved considerably since the initial reports. In the early years, it was thought that a power source other than the main ventricular chamber was useful or even necessary to serve the pulmonary circulation. Better understanding of the physiology of the Fontan-Kreutzer circulation has led to an understanding that avoidance of flow disturbances and energy losses in the surgically constructed pathways is critically important. In vitro studies and clinical investigations of flow dynamics led to the introduction of the

Effect of the flow field of mechanical bileaflet mitral prostheses on valve closing.

Antianatomically installed Jyros (JR) and ATS valves were compared with the St. Jude Medical (SJM) valve in the mitral position to study the effects of valve design on the downstream flow field and associated closing sounds using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) method utilizing a high-speed video flow visualization technique to map the velocity field and sound measurement to confirm claims by the manufacturer. Based on the experimental data, the following general conclusions can be made: in the velocity field directly below the mitral valve, where distinct characteristic differences in valv

Determinants of occurrence and volume of transpyloric flow during gastric emptying of liquids in dogs: importance of vagal input.

The precise factors and their relative contributions that lead to individual flow pulses across the pylorus during liquid gastric emptying remain unclear. Our objective was to determine the factors leading to individual flow pulses, their relative contributions and the role of the vagus nerve in their modulation. Proximal gastric tone had a strong positive correlation with the volume of the corresponding transpyloric flow pulse whereas pyloric tone had an inverse correlation. Antral contractions were associated with the presence but not the volume of the pulse. Acute vagal blockade retarded em

Study on the correlation between hemodynamic status of the transverse sinus-sigmoid sinus and the clinical efficacy of sigmoid sinus wall reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: For patients with pulsatile tinnitus who have both transverse sinus stenosis and sigmoid sinus wall anomalies, sigmoid sinus wall reconstruction surgery is the first-choice treatment when the trans-stenotic pressure gradient less than 10 mmHg. However, not all patients are cured by surgery. We hypothesized the abnormal hemodynamics caused by transverse sinus stenosis is associated with the clinical efficacy of surgery. METHODS: Eight pulsatile tinnitus patients treated with surgery were retrospectively reviewed (4 rehabilitated, 4 nonrehabilitated). All patients had ra

Sound Measurement in Patient-Specific 3D Printed Bench Models of Venous Pulsatile Tinnitus.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize patient-specific flow models to be an adequate in vitro surrogate to allow for characterization of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) that affects three to five million Americans. BACKGROUND: PT, rhythmic sounds without an extracorporeal source that patients appreciate, can be caused by aberrant blood flow in large cerebral veins near the cochlea. To investigate the sound production mechanism, we created 3D printed flow models based on patient-specific cerebral venous anatomies. METHODS: Magnetic resonance angiography datasets from two patients with PT were used to generate p

Effects of pulsatile and nonpulsatile perfusion on cerebral regional oxygen saturation and endothelin-1 in tetralogy of fallot infants.

Although benefits of pulsatile flow during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in pediatric heart surgery remain controversial and nonpulsatile CPB is still widely used in clinical cardiac surgery, pulsatile CPB must be reconsidered due to its physiologic features. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of pulsatile perfusion (PP) and nonpulsatile perfusion (NP) on cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO₂) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in pediatric tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients undergoing open heart surgery with CPB. Forty pediatric patients were randomly divided into the PP group (n = 20) a…

Transverse sinus pathologies, vestibular migraine and intracranial hypertension without papilledema.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of papilledema, the presentation of migraine and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is very similar. In this respect, an IIH could be presented as a vestibular migraine. Our main objective in this case report is to demonstrate the similarities between IIH and vestibular migraine. CASES: This is a report of 14 patients who have IIH without papilledema presented as vestibular migraine to the clinic and followed from 2020 to 2022. RESULTS: The common presentation of patients was ear-facial pain, dizziness, and frequent pulsatile tinnitus. One-fourth of the pat

Sex Differences in Systemic and Coronary Arterial Hemodynamics in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) predominantly affects females. Systemic and coronary arterial abnormalities are present in HFpEF and may contribute to HFpEF in females. We performed a cross-sectional study of 32 participants with HFpEF and 26 controls. Arterial hemodynamics were noninvasively assessed by combining arterial tonometry with echocardiography. Coronary microvascular function was assessed by rubidium-82 positron emission tomography as the myocardial flow reserve. Coronary vascular resistance (CVR) at rest and vasodilator stress were calculated using posit

[Pulsatile total cavopulmonary shunt for hypoplastic right heart syndrome with abnormal systemic venous return--a case report].

A pulsatile total cavopulmonary shunt was successfully performed on a 5-year-old girl with hypoplastic right heart syndrome associated with … by reducing the size of the ASD. These described anatomic arrangements produced adequate antegrade pulsatile flow in the PA, which might prevent the development of pulmonary arteriovenous fistulae and, besides permit transfer of drainage of the hepatic vein from the left to the right atrium via the ASD in future.

Recent Developments in Ventricular Assist Device Therapy.

The evolution of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) from large, pulsatile systems to compact, continuous-flow pumps has significantly improved implantation outcomes and patient mobility. Minimally invasive surgical techniques have emerged that offer reduced morbidity and enhanced recovery for LVAD recipients. Innovations in wireless power transfer technologies aim to mitigate driveline-related complications, enhancing patient safety and quality of life. Pediatric ventricular assist devices (VADs) remain a critical unmet need; challenges in developing pediatric VADs include device sizing a

[Mechanisms of Cerebrospinal Fluid Production and Absorption and Ventricular Dilatation in Hydrocephalus].

The concept of cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)production and absorption changed significantly in the early 2010s from "third circulation theory" an … w produced by the rhythmic wavy movement of motile cilia on the ventricular surface and the dynamic pulsatile flow produced by the pulsation of the cerebral arteries or brain, respiration, and head movement. In general, this pulsatile CSF flow decreases with aging but increases at the opening of the foramen of Magendie and causes the ventricles to expand in iNPH …

Re-orchestration of blood flow by micro-circulations.

Haemoglobin Video Imaging (HVI) demonstrates conjunctival and episcleral blood flow in man with the resolution of a single erythrocyte. A new method for establishing vessel hierarchy in micro-circulations is described, which recognises either delivery or drainage vessels and references vessel order to the capillary. These tools have been used to characterise blood flow.Anterior ciliary arteries show pulsatile variation in diameter. The episcleral arterial circle that they supply has functional apices with pulsatile flow reversal. Perfusion fields overlap: a single delivery vessel may project t…

Experience With a Long-term Pulsatile Ventricular Assist Device as a Bridge to Heart Transplant in Adults.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Most long-term ventricular assist devices (VADs) that are currently implanted are intracorporeal continuous-flow devices. Their main limitations include their high cost and inability to provide biventricular support. The aim of this study was to describe the results of using paracorporeal pulsatile-flow VADs as a bridge to transplant (BTT) in adult patients. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the characteristics, complications, and outcomes of a single-center case series of consecutive patients treated with the EXCOR VAD as BTT between 2009 and 2015. RESULTS: Dur

Pulsatile electrical impedance response from cerebrally dead adult patients is not a reliable tool for detecting cerebral perfusion changes.

The original objective of this work was to verify the possibility of using electrical pulsatile cerebral impedance measurements as a diagnostic aid for assessing the brain-death condition in adults; a subordinate target was to validate a simple method for detecting perfusional changes in the brain. To this end, impedance signals were recorded, for a comparative study, from both live subjects and brain-dead patients, using a simple four-electrode arrangement. Rather unexpectedly, pulsatile transcephalic impedance waveforms exhibiting a temporal dependance similar to those of live subjects were

Nonpulsatile arterial waveforms: observations during graded testicular torsion in rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We tested whether testicular torsion could completely damp distal arterial pulsatility, resulting in venous-appearing arterial waveforms. METHODS: Progressively increasing testicular torsion was unilaterally produced in five rats. Doppler waveforms of the testicular artery distal to the torsion were obtained as soon as possible after each level of torsion until a complete absence of pulsatility was noted. RESULTS: One animal was not studied further after the first 180 degrees of torsion occluded flow. In three of the remaining four animals, the testicular artery res
