Hydrophilic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as promising materials for biomedical diagnostics due to their exceptional optical tunability and high photoluminescence quantum yield. However, their instability, toxicity, and degradation in aqueous and biological environments remain critical barriers to practical applications. This review integrates predictive modeling and bioinspired stabilization strategies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms governing PQD instability and the design of robust, biocompatible nanostructures. The blue light using flavin (BLUF) domain functions as a versatile photoreceptor switch mediated by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). Despite extensive ultrafast spectroscopic studies on BLUF mutants, the mechanistic role of key aromatic residues in regulating PCET pathways remains unclear. Here, we employ QM(MS-CASPT2)/MM calculations to elucidate the PCET mechanism of the FMN-Glu48-Trp6 (FMN-E-W) and FMN-Glu48-Tyr6 (FMN-E-Y) mutants. In the forward reaction, FMN-E-W follows a stepwise mechanism initiated by a PCET process from Glu48 to FMN, followed by another proton transfer from Trp

Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs), as an emerging member of the fluorescent quantum dot family, hold great promise for application in biological analysis and environmental health. However, their intrinsic resistance to fouling in complex matrix pollution is rarely reported. Herein, we report the remarkable antifouling properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified SQDs, which exhibit 100% fluorescence retention under harsh conditions, including high salinity (2 M), high temperature (90 °C), and high protein concentration (150 mg/mL). Through fluorescence quenching experiments and density functional

The stability-reactivity paradox of β-lactam antibiotics remains a fundamental puzzle in medicinal chemistry: how can cephalosporins maintain high antibacterial efficacy despite having reduced ring strain compared to penicillins? Here, we reveal the intrinsic conformational architecture of 7-aminodesacetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA), the foundational core of cephalosporins, using laser ablation broadband rotational spectroscopy and high-level quantum chemical calculations. In a striking departure from the hydrogen-bond-mediated activation observed in penicillins, we discovered that 7-ADCA c

Skin cancer is the most common and fatal illness globally, and therefore, proper early detection is essential for successful treatment and enhanced patient outcomes. Classic deep learning models, especially Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have greatly succeeded in medical image classification. However, classic CNNs also suffer from severe limitations such as computational inefficiency, overfitting on small datasets, and redundant feature extraction, which restrict their utility in clinical settings. To overcome these drawbacks, we introduce QAttn-CNN as a quantum-classical deep learning

Accurate prediction of protein-ligand binding affinities is crucial in drug discovery, particularly during hit-to-lead and lead optimization phases, however, limitations in ligand force fields continue to impact prediction accuracy. In this work, we validate relative binding free energy (RBFE) accuracy using neural network potentials (NNPs) for the ligands. We utilize a novel NNP model, AceFF 1.0, based on the TensorNet architecture for small molecules that broadens the applicability to diverse drug-like compounds, including all important chemical elements and supporting charged molecules. We present a comprehensive spectroscopic study supported by theoretical quantum chemical calculations conducted on a molecular system (4-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (C1) and the antibiotic Amphotericin B (AmB)) that exhibits highly synergistic properties. We previously reported the strong synergism of this molecular system and now wish to present related stationary measurements of UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, and fluorescence anisotropy in a polar, aprotic solvent (DMSO and a PBS buffer), followed by time-resolved fluorescence intensity and anisotropy decay studies usi

The N1-Spermidine/spermine acetyltransferase (SSAT) serves as the rate-limiting enzyme in the polyamine metabolism pathway, specifically catalyzing the acetylation of spermidine, spermine, and other specific polyamines. The source of its enzymatic selectivity remains elusive. Here, we used quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics simulations combined with various technologies to explore the enzymatic mechanism of SSAT for endogenous polyamines from an atomic perspective. The static binding and chemical transformation were considered. The binding affinity was identified to be dependent on prot

Linuron is a commonly used organic herbicide which is used in plant growth control. Due to its potential health concerns, the characterization and monitoring of linuron have been a subject of several studies. In this work, we employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Raman spectroscopic techniques supported with the density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the conformational behavior and electronic aspects of linuron. The selective nuclear Overhauser effect (SelNOE) spectra confirmed that linuron exists predominantly in the anti configuration and is facilitated with a weak intramolec

Nonradiative electron-hole recombination constitutes a major route for charge and energy losses in copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) solar cells. Using a combination of nonadiabatic (NA) molecular dynamics and deep neural networks (DNN), we demonstrated that electron-hole recombination is notably retarded by doping with Ag and Ag+Cd. The replacement of lighter Cu and/or Zn with heavier Ag and/or Cd reduces the NA coupling by separating electron and hole wave functions. Such replacement suppresses atomic motions and makes the phonon modes move to low-frequency region, which reduces NA coupling fur

The visible region of the electronic absorption spectra of Cu(II) complexes was studied by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The performance of twelve functionals in the prediction of absorption maxima (λmax) was tested on eleven compounds with different geometry, donors and charge. The ranking of the functionals for λmax was determined in terms of mean absolute percent deviation (MAPD) and standard deviation (SD) and it is as follows: BHandHLYP > M06 ≫ CAM-B3LYP ≫ MPW1PW91 ~ B1LYP ~ BLYP > HSE06 ~ B3LYP > B3P86 ~ ω-B97x-D ≫ TPSSh ≫ M06-2X (MAPD) and BHandHLYP > M06 ~ HSE06 >

Experimental charge density distribution studies, complemented by quantum mechanical theoretical calculations, of a host-guest system composed of a macrocycle (1) and barbital (2) in a 1:1 ratio (3) have been carried out via high-resolution single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The data were modeled using the conventional multipole model of electron density according to the Hansen-Coppens formalism. The asymmetric unit of macrocycle 1 contained an intraannular ethanol molecule and an extraannular acetonitrile molecule, and the asymmetric unit of 3 also contained an intraannular ethanol molecule. In their 1H NMR spectra in CDCl3 3-oxo-N-acyl homoserine lactones (OHLs) show significant downfield chemical shifts of the amide NH proton when compared to the parent N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). NMR spectroscopic and DFT calculation studies have shown that this is most likely due to the presence of a stabilising intramolecular H-bond from the NH to the 3-oxo group. The 1H NMR spectra also show evidence for the enol tautomers and that the amount of enol present for a range of OHLs is 4.1-4.5% in CDCl3 and 6.5-7.2% in CD3CN. In contrast, DFT calculations show that the lowest energy enol t

The antibiotic activity of nonactin is sustained by its ability to transport K+ across lipophilic phases, e.g., the cell membranes. Such a feature can be traced back to a specific ionophoric behavior and to a balanced hydrophobicity modulated by the formation of a cation complex. In this study, the dominant conformations and coordination arrangements in the alkali cation complexes (Na+, K+, Cs+) of nonactin are characterized by means of action vibrational spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The low energy conformers of the complexes comprise compact inclusion structures, in which t

Quantum chemistry calculations and kinetic modeling were performed to investigate the nitrosation mechanism and kinetics of diamine piperazine (PZ), an alternative solvent for widely used monoethanolamine in postcombustion CO2 capture (PCCC), by two typical nitrosating agents, NO2- and N2O3, in the presence of CO2. Various PZ species and nitrosating agents formed by the reactions of PZ, NO2-, and N2O3 with CO2 were considered. The results indicated that the reactions of PZ species having NH group with N2O3 contribute the most to the formation of nitrosamines in the absorber unit of PCCC and fo

Xanthines represent a wide class of compounds closely related to the DNA bases adenine and guanine. Ubiquitous in the human body, they are capable of replacing natural bases in double helices and give rise to four-stranded structures. Although the use of their fluorescence for analytical purposes was proposed, their fluorescence properties have not been properly characterized so far. The present paper reports the first fluorescence study of xanthine solutions relying on femtosecond spectroscopy. Initially, we focus on 3-methylxanthine, showing that this compound exhibits non-exponential fluore

The CH3Cl + CN(-) reaction in water was studied using a multilevel quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (MM) method with the multilevels, electrostatic potential, density functional theory (DFT) and coupled-cluster single double triple (CCSD(T)), for the solute region. The detailed, back-side attack SN2 reaction mechanism was mapped along the reaction pathway. The potentials of mean force were calculated under both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels for the reaction region. The CCSD(T)/MM level of theory presents a free energy activation barrier height at 20.3 kcal/mol, which agrees very well with th

The chirality of a gold nanocluster can be generated from either an intrinsically chiral inorganic core or an achiral inorganic core in a chiral environment. The first structural determination of a gold nanocluster containing an intrinsic chiral inorganic core is reported. The chiral gold nanocluster [Au20(PP3)4]Cl4 (PP3=tris(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)phosphine) has been prepared by the reduction of a gold(I)-tetraphosphine precursor in dichloromethane solution. Single-crystal structural determination reveals that the cluster molecular structure has C3 symmetry. It consists of a Au20 core con

We demonstrate the application of the combined experimental-computational approach for studying the anionic impurities in hydroxyapatite (HAp). Influence of the carbonation level (x) on the concentration of the NO3(2-) radicals in the HAp nanocrystals of Ca10-xNax(PO4)6-x(CO3)x(OH)2 with x in the range 0 < x < 2 and average sizes of 30 nm is investigated by different analytical methods including electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Stable NO3(2-) radicals are formed under X-ray irradiation of nano-HAp samples from NO3(-) ions incorporated in trace amounts during the wet synthesis process. De

The mechanism of glucose ring opening and isomerization to fructose, catalyzed by the Lewis acid catalyst CrCl3 in the presence of water, is investigated using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics with metadynamics. Minimum energy pathways for the reactions are revealed and the corresponding free energy barriers are computed. Addition of glucose replaces two water molecules in the active [Cr(H2O)5OH](+2) complex, with two hydroxyl groups of glucose taking their place. Ring opening and isomerization reactions can only proceed if the first step involving the deprotonation of glucose is accompanied
