Prevalence of Race/Ethnicity Reporting in Light Chain (AL) Amyloidosis Clinical Research in the USA.

Little is known about racial differences in the incidence of light chain (AL) amyloidosis despite the well-documented racial disparities in the epidemiology of other plasma cell disorders. The goal of this study was to examine the extent to which published clinical research in AL amyloidosis report information on patients' race. Clinical research publications in AL amyloidosis between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2020, from the USA were identified. In addition to the reporting of race, study design, funding, cohort size, year of publication, impact factor of publication journal, and first

Race-Related Association between APOE Genotype and Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The global race-dependent association of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype is not well understood. Transethnic analysis of APOE could clarify the role of genetics in AD risk across populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine how race and APOE genotype affect the risks for AD. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library since 1993 to Aug 25, 2020. A total of 10,395 reports were identified, and 133 were eligible for analysis with data on 77,402 participants. Studies contained AD clinical

Punitive Social Policy and Vital Inequality.

Geographical inequalities in life and death are among the world's most pronounced in the United States. However, the driving forces behind this macroscopic variation in population health outcomes remain surprisingly understudied, both empirically and theoretically. The present article steps into this breach by assessing a number of theoretically informed hypotheses surrounding the underlying causes of such spatial heterogeneity. Above and beyond a range of usual suspects, such as poverty, unemployment, and ethno-racial disparities, we find that a hitherto neglected explanans is prison incarcer

UV Exposure and the Risk of Cutaneous Melanoma in Skin of Color: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: While current evidence supports UV exposure as an important risk factor for cutaneous melanoma in fair-skinned populations, the evidence for this association in skin of color is less certain. OBJECTIVE: To critically assess and synthesize the published data regarding the association between UV exposure and the risk of cutaneous melanoma in skin of color. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A search was conducted including PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases from database origin to June 3, 2020. Only peer-reviewed original studies were screened in full text. Eligible studies analyzed UV e

Therapists' Experiences of Working with Ethnic Minority Females with Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Study.

Ethnic minority females are less likely to receive a diagnosis or treatment for an eating disorder (ED). This study captured the experiences of therapists who have worked with ethnic minority females to improve outcomes for this group. Twelve therapists in the United Kingdom, London were recruited for semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Shame was cited as a barrier to accessing help. This influenced therapeutic work such as not challenging shame or linking this to a negative interpretation of parents. Emotional and interpersonal factors were thought t

Co-occurrence of congenital anomalies by maternal race/ethnicity among infants and fetuses with Down syndrome, 2013-2017: A U.S. population-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a higher prevalence of additional congenital anomalies, especially cardiovascular defects, compared to the general population. Several reports have indicated that the prevalence of DS among live births varies by race and ethnicity within the United States. We aim to examine variations in co-occurring congenital anomalies by maternal race/ethnicity among infants and fetuses diagnosed with DS born during 2013-2017. METHODS: State birth defect surveillance systems (N = 12) submitted data on infants and fetuses diagnosed with DS born during 201

HIV mortality across the 30 largest U.S. cities: assessing overall trends and racial inequities.

BACKGROUND: Despite decreases in overall HIV mortality in the U.S., large racial inequities persist. Most previous analyses of HIV mortality and mortality inequities have utilized national- or state-level data. METHODS: Using vital statistics mortality data and American Community Survey population estimates, we calculated HIV mortality rates and Black:White HIV mortality rate ratios (RR) for the 30 most populous U.S. cities at two time points, 2010-2014 (T1) and 2015-2019 (T2). RESULTS: Almost all cities (28) had HIV mortality rates higher than the national rate at both time points. At T2, H

Effect of race and ethnicity on renal transplant referral
.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have revealed disparity in renal healthcare access and outcomes in racial/ethnic minorities with the socioeconomic status explaining the majority but not all of the disparity. We wanted to determine if racial/ethnic disparities existed at the first step toward renal transplantation, the renal transplant referral process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 200 adult end-stage renal disease patients was followed retrospectively for 2 years from January 2016 to February 2018. The study exposure was based on self-declared race/ethnicity of the patients, who were categ

Representations of race and skin tone in medical textbook imagery.

UNLABELLED: Although a large literature has documented racial inequities in health care delivery, there continues to be debate about the potential sources of these inequities. Preliminary research suggests that racial inequities are embedded in the curricular edification of physicians and patients. We investigate this hypothesis by considering whether the race and skin tone depicted in images in textbooks assigned at top medical schools reflects the diversity of the U.S. POPULATION: We analyzed 4146 images from Atlas of Human Anatomy, Bates' Guide to Physical Examination & History Taking, Cli

Surveillance of Tonsillar Cancer Incidence Rates in Minority Groups vs Non-Hispanic Whites in Large US Metropolitan Areas.

BACKGROUND: For oropharyngeal (OP) cancers at anatomical sites regarded as related to human papillomavirus (HPV), surveillance using population-based cancer registries has shown that age-standardized incidence rates are higher in US non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) vs minority groups. Surveillance in large racially-ethnically diverse urban areas also should be considered. METHODS: Using the US Cancer Statistics database, age-standardized incidence rates per year were obtained for 2003–2013 for carcinomas of the tonsil, the OP site most strongly associated with HPV. Data were available for NHWs, non-

Associations of blood pressure, sunlight, and vitamin D in community-dwelling adults.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is associated with hypertension. Blood pressure (BP) and circulating vitamin D concentrations vary with the seasons and distance from the equator suggesting BP varies inversely with the sunshine available (insolation) for cutaneous vitamin D photosynthesis. METHODS: To determine if the association between insolation and BP is partly explained by vitamin D, we evaluated 1104 participants in the Reasons for Racial and Geographic Differences in Stroke study whose BP and plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were measured. RESULTS: We

Ten tips for treating acne vulgaris in Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI.

During the 21st century, people with skin of color will account for a large portion of the US population. According to race projections from the US Census Bureau, persons of African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American descent will make up nearly half of the total US population by the year 2050. Because of our changing demographics, it is important that all dermatologists become comfortable in treating skin of color. This article provides 10 practical pearls for management of acne vulgaris in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI.

Population heterogeneity in the genetic control of serum urate.

Scanning of the genome in Caucasian cohorts for genes that control serum urate levels have revealed eight confirmed associations. Knowledge of genetic control of serum urate in other populations can be extrapolated from the study of gout, a condition of extreme hyperuricemia; three urate transport genes (SLC2A9, ABCG2, and SLC17A1/NPT1) have been studied in diverse populations (Caucasian, Asian, and Polynesian). Between-population heterogeneity is evident in allele frequency and association with gout, notably within Polynesian populations, which are defined by a geographic region and shared an

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: Extending the range of structural defects.

Although the structural phenotype of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is established, prenatal exposure to alcohol may produce a broader spectrum of defects, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Documenting the full spectrum of defects associated with FASD is critical to determining the true incidence of this disorder. We examined 831 children from the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders using a structured protocol for diagnosis of FAS using the cardinal facial and growth features, and assessment of additional structural defects thought to occur more often in children w

Identifying the roles of race-based choice and chance in high school friendship network formation.

Homophily, the tendency of people to associate with others similar to themselves, is observed in many social networks, ranging from friendships to marriages to business relationships, and is based on a variety of characteristics, including race, age, gender, religion, and education. We present a technique for distinguishing two primary sources of homophily: biases in the preferences of individuals over the types of their friends and biases in the chances that people meet individuals of other types. We use this technique to analyze racial patterns in friendship networks in a set of American hig

Interindividual variations in the efficacy and toxicity of vaccines.

A number of currently available vaccines have shown significant differences in the magnitude of immune responses and toxicity in individuals undergoing vaccination. A number of factors may be involved in the variations in immune responses, which include age, gender, race, amount and quality of the antigen, the dose administered and to some extent the route of administration, and genetics of immune system. Hence, it becomes imperative that researchers have tools such as genomics and proteomics at their disposal to predict which set of population is more likely to be non-responsive or develop to
