Radioresistant DNA synthesis in cells of patients showing increased chromosomal sensitivity to ionizing radiation.

The rate of DNA synthesis after gamma-irradiation was studied either by analysis of the steady-state distribution of daughter [3H]DNA in alkaline sucrose gradients or by direct assay of the amount of [3H]thymidine incorporated into DNA of fibroblasts derived from a normal donor (LCH882) and from Down's syndrome (LCH944), Werner's syndrome (WS1LE) and xeroderma pigmentosum (XP2LE) patients with chromosomal sensitivity to ionizing radiation. Doses of gamma-irradiation that markedly inhibited the rate of DNA synthesis in normal human cells caused almost no inhibition of DNA synthesis in the cells

A systematic review of human evidence for the intergenerational effects of exposure to ionizing radiation.

PURPOSE: To provide a synthesis of the published evidence pertaining to the intergenerational health effects of parental preconceptional exposure to ionizing radiation in humans. METHODS: The study populations are the descendants of those who were exposed to ionizing radiation prior to conception. A Boolean search identified publications for review in accordance with Office of Health Assessment and Translation guidelines. Initially, a risk of bias assessment was conducted for each published study and relevant data extracted. Information was organized into adverse health outcome groups and exp

Exposure to ionizing radiation and liver histopathology in the tree frogs of Chornobyl (Ukraine).

Ionizing radiation has the potential to damage organic molecules and decrease the health and survival of wildlife. The accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Plant (Ukraine, 1986) led to the largest release of radioactive material to the environment. Among the different organs of a vertebrate, the liver plays a crucial role in detoxification processes, and has been used as a biomarker to investigate cellular damage in ecotoxicological research. Here, we examined the impact of the exposure to the current levels of ionizing radiation present in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone on the liver of Eastern tre

Exposure to Ionizing Radiation and Risk of Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The number of people living with dementia is rising globally as life expectancy increases. Dementia is a multifactorial disease. Due to the ubiquity of radiation exposure in medical and occupational settings, the potential association between radiation and dementia, and its subtypes (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease), is of particular importance. There has also been an increased interest in studying radiation induced dementia risks in connection with the long-term manned space travel proposed by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Our aim was to systematically review t

Dichotomous effects of in vivo and in vitro ionizing radiation exposure on lymphatic function.

On the one hand, lymphatic dysfunction induces interstitial edema and inflammation. On the other hand, the formation of edema and inflammation induce lymphatic dysfunction. However, informed by the earlier reports of undetected apoptosis of irradiated lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) in vivo, lymphatic vessels are commonly considered inconsequential to ionizing radiation (IR)-induced inflammatory injury to normal tissues. Primarily because of the lack of understanding of the acute effects of IR exposure on lymphatic function, acute edema and inflammation, common sequelae of IR exposure, have

Effect of ionizing radiation on the secretion of the paracellular pathway in rat submandibular glands.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the effects of ionizing radiation on the secretion of the paracellular pathway in rat submandibular glands (SMGs) and reveal the changes in the tight junction (TJ) protein claudin-4. METHODS: A total of 24 Wistar rats were randomly divided into control and irradiation groups. The irradiation groups were further divided into 1, 4, and 12 weeks groups after irradiation. One-time 20 Gy irradiation was given to the SMG area on the experimental side of the irradiation group. At 1, 4, and 12 weeks after irradiation, the secretion of SMGs was measured using

THE INVESTIGATION OF MICRONUCLEI FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION FOR EXPOSED AND UNEXPOSED PERSONNEL TO IONIZING RADIATION.

To establish at which extent the micronuclei (MN) frequency is influenced by occupational exposure to ionizing radiation, peripheral blood samples collected from 2151 subjects of both genders, smokers and non-smokers were analyzed. Among them, 378 (17.6%) were unexposed while the other 1773 (82.4%) were exposed to ionizing radiation for periods between 1 year and more than 30 years, at levels never overpassing legally regulated limits. The final results showed that for all investigated categories, MN frequency monotonously increases with the age by 1.75 ± 0.17 times in the case of exposed subj

Highly Sensitive Detection of Ionizing Radiations by a Photoluminescent Uranyl Organic Framework.

Precise detection of low-dose X- and γ-radiations remains a challenge and is particularly important for studying biological effects under low-dose ionizing radiation, safety control in medical radiation treatment, survey of environmental radiation background, and monitoring cosmic radiations. We report here a photoluminescent uranium organic framework, whose photoluminescence intensity can be accurately correlated with the exposure dose of X- or γ-radiations. This allows for precise and instant detection of ionizing radiations down to the level of 10-4  Gy, representing a significant improveme

Evidence for a teratogenic risk in the offspring of health personnel exposed to ionizing radiation?!

BACKGROUND: The evidence concerning safety of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation on teratogenic effects mainly relies on animal models, disaster epidemiology and experience in cancer etiology. Following an explorative result on maternal exposure in medical occupations we conducted a feasibility study, addressing congenital anomalies (CA) in the offspring of health workers potentially exposed to radiation. METHODS: In a prospective follow-up study, we enrolled women, identified by mandatory registration at the office of radiation protection as wearing a dosimeter. The participating wo

The genome-wide effects of ionizing radiation on mutation induction in the mammalian germline.

The ability to predict the genetic consequences of human exposure to ionizing radiation has been a long-standing goal of human genetics in the past 50 years. Here we present the results of an unbiased, comprehensive genome-wide survey of the range of germline mutations induced in laboratory mice after parental exposure to ionizing radiation and show irradiation markedly alters the frequency and spectrum of de novo mutations. Here we show that the frequency of de novo copy number variants (CNVs) and insertion/deletion events (indels) is significantly elevated in offspring of exposed fathers. We

Long-term correlation of the electrocorticogram as a bioindicator of brain exposure to ionizing radiation.

Understanding the effects of radiation and its possible influence on the nervous system are of great clinical interest. However, there have been few electrophysiological studies on brain activity after exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). A new methodological approach regarding the assessment of the possible effects of IR on brain activity is the use of linear and nonlinear mathematical methods in the analysis of complex time series, such as brain oscillations measured using the electrocorticogram (ECoG). The objective of this study was to use linear and nonlinear mathematical methods as bioma

The role of cyclin D1 in response to long-term exposure to ionizing radiation.

The health-related hazards resulting from long-term exposure to radiation remain unknown. Thus, an appropriate molecular marker is needed to clarify these effects. Cyclin D1 regulates the cell cycle transition from the G 1 phase to the S phase. Cyclin D1 is degraded as a G1/S checkpoint after 10 Gy of single acute radiation exposure, whereas conversely, cyclin D1 is stabilized when human tumor cells are exposed to fractionated radiation (FR) with 0.5 Gy of x-rays for 31 d. In this article, we review new findings regarding cyclin D1 overexpression in response to long-term exposure to FR. Cyclin

[Prevention of cancer and the dose-effect relationship: the carcinogenic effects of ionizing radiations].

Cancer prevention has to be based on robust biological and epidemiological data, therefore its reappraisal becomes mandatory in view of recent progress in the understanding of carcinogenesis. The first phase of the carcinogenic process, that of initiation, is generally associated with mutation; however the role of extrinsic mutagens is less critical than was thought two decades ago. During intracellular oxygen metabolism, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are made which are potent mutagens. Defense mechanisms against these intrinsic mutagens include scavenger and enzymatic systems which destroy th

Decomposition and mineralization of cefaclor by ionizing radiation: kinetics and effects of the radical scavengers.

There has been recent growing interest in the presence of antibiotics in different environmental sectors. One considerable concern is the potential development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment, even at low concentrations. Cefaclor, one of the beta-lactam antibiotics, is widely used as an antibiotic. Kinetic studies were conducted to evaluate the decomposition and mineralization of cefaclor using gamma radiation. Cefaclor, 30 mg/l, was completely degraded with 1,000 Gy of gamma radiation. At a concentration of 30 mg/l, the removal efficiency, represented by the G-value, decre

[Influence of ionizing radiation on the attractiveness of male mice to chemosignals of intact individuals].

Within short-terms after exposure to ionizing radiation, CBA and C57Bl/6 male mice were found not only to retain but also to enhance their attractiveness to chemosignals of intact males of the same genotype (syngenic). It was shown that the time period of higher attractiveness increased with the absorbed dose (from 1 to 6 Gy). Within several days after exposure to 6-Gy irradiation, male mice were temporarily unable to discriminate between chemosignals of syngenic and allogenic (alien genotype) individuals. Unlike male mice of the CBA strain, male mice of the C57Bl/6 strain displayed no changes

[Association of renal carcinoma and the exposure to ionizing radiation after the Chernobyl accident].

After the nuclear accident of Chernobyl, in the population of zones contaminated the malignant renal tumors was increased from 4.7 to 7.5 per 100,000 of total population. Cesium 137 (137Cs) constitutes 80-90% of the internal exposure of these people as well as eliminated through kidneys becomes an important risk factor. We present a case of a patient, residing in radiocontamined area, who consulted for abdominal pain and left flank mass. We review relevant literature and the management of these patients.

[Effect of ultra-low dose of ionizing radiation on the surface potential of erythrocytes].

Effect of ionizing radiation in ultralow dose (5 microGy) on responses of erythrocyte electrophoretic motility (EPM) as a result of adrenoreceptor ligands binding (0.01-100 microM) has been investigated. The opposite directional EPM responses to agonists (adrenaline, isoprenaline) and antagonist (propranolol) of beta-adrenoreceptors was shown. At that, EPM response to the radiation coincides both with the direction and value of acting the beta-adrenoreceptor agonists depressing EPM. The EPM response to a combined action of beta-adrenoreceptors antagonist, propranolol (10 microM), and ionizing
