Dentigerous cyst associated with a mesiodens: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are the second most common odontogenic cysts after radicular cysts and are most commonly seen in association with third molars and maxillary canines. Only 5% of dentigerous cysts involve supernumerary teeth, of which mesiodens is the most frequent type. This paper presents a case of dentigerous cyst associated with a mesiodens that caused a painless swelling in the upper lip of an 18-year-old female. The patient was treated surgically by enucleation of total cyst and surgical extraction of mesiodens under local anesthesia.

The aggressive nature of the odontogenic keratocyst: is it a benign cystic neoplasm? Part 3. Immunocytochemistry of cytokeratin and other epithelial cell markers.

Numerous studies of keratin expression by the more common odontogenic cysts were done to determine whether patterns of cytokeratin staining … proliferative activity. Yet other studies have also shown keratin 16 expression in dentigerous and radicular cysts. Differences in cytokeratin, EMA and CEA immunocytochemical reactivity between the parakeratinised and orthokeratinised varieties of cyst were demonstrated and the suggestion made that the orthokeratinised type has a considerably less aggressive be …

A case of symptomatic cervical perineural (Tarlov) cyst: clinical manifestation and management.

Perineural (Tarlov) cysts are most often found in the sacral region and are rare in the cervical spine. Although they are usually asymptomatic, a small number of those at the lumbosacral level have been known to produce localized or radicular pain. Few reports are available on symptomatic perineural cysts in the cervical spine and it has not been discussed how they should be managed. We present here a case of cervical perineural cysts with persistent radicular pain where the pain was adequately managed with repetitive transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI). The patient had experienc

A Comparative Study of Macrophage Density in Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors with Diverse Clinical Behavior.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Macrophages are the target of attention in numerous diseases. Many studies reported them as the regulators of the … odontogenic lesions including ameloblastoma, keratocystic odontogenic tumor, dentigerous cyst, and radicular cyst were immunohistochemically stained with anti-CD68 antibody. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that the macrophage density in keratocystic odontogenic tumor (35.72±7.74) and ameloblast …

Demographic distribution of odontogenic cysts in Isfahan (Iran) over a 23-year period (1988-2010).

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts are relatively common lesions which can cause different complications. As demographic information is lacking i … ts was 29.53 ± 16.1. Male to female ratio was 1.31:1. The four most frequent odontogenic cysts were radicular cysts (35.12%), dentigerous cysts (25.77%), odontogenic keratocysts (22.58%) and residual cysts (12.98%). CONCLUSION: Odontogenic cysts are fairly frequent jaw lesions (21.62%), of which radicular cyst was the most common cyst. The four most common lesi …

Nasopalatine duct cyst.

The nasopalatine cyst is the most common epithelial and nonodontogenic cyst of the maxilla. The cyst originates from epithelial remnants from the nasopalatine duct. The cells may be activated spontaneously during life or are eventually stimulated by the irritating action of various agents (infection, etc.). It is different from a radicular cyst. The definite diagnosis should be based on clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings. The treatment is enucleation of the cystic tissue, and only in rare cases a marsupialisation needs to be performed. A case of a nasopalatine duct cyst in …

Giant sacral perineurial cyst. A case report.

A rare case of giant sacral perineurial cyst, causing sciatic pain, explored by myelography and computerized tomography, is reported. The cyst, associated with large erosion of the sacrum, was poorly visualized on the myelography, because of its large size, whereas it was better defined on CT scan. Sacral perineurial cysts are usually small and asymptomatic and rarely cause radicular symptoms. The radiological diagnosis and the treatment of these nerve root cysts are briefly discussed.

The diagnosis and management of synovial cysts: Efficacy of surgery versus cyst aspiration.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of lumbar synovial cysts that have extruded into the spinal canal remains controversial (e.g. decompression with/without fusion). METHODS: The neurological presentation, anatomy, pathophysiology, and surgical challenges posed by synovial cysts in the lumbar spine are well known. Neurological complaints typically include unilateral or, more rarely, bilateral radicular complaints, and/or cauda equina syndromes. Anatomically, synovial cysts constitute cystic dilatations of synovial sheaths that directly extrude from facet joints into the spinal canal. Pathophy

Intraosseous carcinoma arising from an odontogenic cyst: a case report.

Carcinomas from an odontogenic cyst are not common, yet when they occur, squamous cell carcinomas are the most often seen. Among these cysts, the malignancy of keratocysts or dentigerous cysts are most likely. In contrast, a malignant transformation of a radicular cyst to an intraosseous carcinoma is extremely rare. In this case report, an intraosseous carcinoma arising from an odontogenic cyst in a 26-year-old male patient is presented. This case report clearly demonstrates the importance of the clinician's awareness of the malignant potential of apparently innocuous cystic lesions.

A 5-year survey of oral biopsies in an oral surgical unit in Singapore: 1993-1997.

A survey of oral biopsies performed in an oral surgical centre in Singapore from 1993 to 1997 was carried out to determine the relative frequency of oral pathologies encountered. A total of 2057 reports were reviewed, of which 1986 separate diagnoses were counted. The great majority of patients were Asian. The 20 most common diagnoses were: fibrous epulis (10.3%), periapical granuloma (8.8%), mucocele (8.6%), radicular cyst (7.6%), lichen planus (5.7%), mucosal inflammation (3.6%), squamous cell carcinoma (3.5%), granulation tissue (3.3%), fibrous hyperplasia (3.1%), keratosis (3.1%), pyogenic…

[Epidermoid cysts and implants. Anatomo-pathologic findings].

A case is reported that is exceptional in more than one respect. The mandibular region was the site of development of three cysts: a radiculo-dental cyst, a coronodental cyst in appearance but which could have been an epidermoid cyst and a typical epidermoid cyst. Lingual nerve lesions are a rare, major complication of implantations. Dismounting of a stable implant is a very rare occurrence. Histopathology showed a bone integration process in contact with the major part of implant, an interposed fibrous band existing in certain sectors only.

[Lumbar root compression secondary to juxtafacet cysts: review of 10 cases].

OBJECT: We report a series of 10 patients with 11 juxtafacet cysts of the lumbar spine treated in our center from 1994 to 2000. METHODS: The clinical histories, radiographic images, surgical protocols and pathological records of the 10 patients diagnosed of lumbar juxtafacet cyst have been analyzed. RESULTS: Six patients were women and four were men. The average age of presentation was 54 years. The most frequent clinical presentation was radicular pain, and motor or sensitive deficits were not very common. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance are essential in establishing the diagnosi

A 2-day decompression: a case report of a maxillary first molar.

A case report of a maxillary first molar is presented in which a drainage tube from a decompression procedure was removed 2 days following placement. The oral surgeon who removed the tube scheduled the patient for surgical enucleation of the large periapical lesion. The surgical appointment was subsequently cancelled and routine endodontic follow-up showed continued osseous repair at 3, 6, and 12 months. The decompression of a large periapical lesion is a conservative alternative to surgical enucleation.
