We report 7 cases of radiation-induced skin cancer. The diagnosis was based on the history of radiotherapy for benign skin diseases (5 cases) and of occupational exposures to medical doctors (2 cases). All cases were squamous cell carcinomas which arose from chronic radiodermatitis. The estimated latent period of these tumors ranged from 6 to 64 years, with an average of 29.9 years. After surgical treatments of the lesions, no local recurrences were observed in all cases. Benign skin diseases had sometimes been treated with low-energy radiation before the 1960s. Considering the estimated laten…

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced dermatitis impairs the quality of life of cancer patients and may lead to the need of interrupting radiotherapy. The grade of dermatitis is subjectively assessed by the visual examination. There is an urgent need for both objective and quantitative methods for assessing the current grade of dermatitis and predicting its severity at an early stage of radiotherapy.
AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the advantages and limitations of infrared thermography for monitoring the current level of radiation-induced dermatitis and predicting its severity by quantitat

An important hallmark of radiation dermatitis is the impairment of the mitotic ability of the stem/progenitor cells in the basal cell layers due to radiation-induced DNA damage, leading to suppressed cell renewal in the epidermis. However, this mechanism alone does not adequately explain the complex pathogenesis of radiation-induced skin injury. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on the complex pathogenesis of radiation dermatitis and correlate these with the clinical features of radiation-induced skin reactions. The current studies show that skin exposure to ionizing radiation i

PURPOSE: We applied a radiomics approach to skin surface images to objectively assess acute radiation dermatitis in patients undergoing radi … lysis methods were used in this study to test the performance of radiomic features as indicators of radiodermatitis evaluation.
RESULTS: As the skin was damaged by radiation, the energy for normal mode and sum variance for polarized and UV modes decreased significantly for ipsilateral breasts, whereas contralateral breasts exhibited a smaller decrease with stati …

BACKGROUND: Our previous study reported that recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF)-triggered EGFR internalization promoted radioresistance. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effect of rhEGF on the skin protection of rectal and anal cancer patients receiving radiotherapy.
METHODS: One hundred and ninety-three rectal and anal cancer patients who received radiotherapy were prospectively enrolled from January 2019 to December 2020. To perform self-controlled study, the left and right pelvic skin area (separated by midline) were randomly assigned to the rhEGF and control side. The associa

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomised, placebo-controlled trial (RCT) with 46 HNC patients who underwent radiotherapy (RT) with or without concomitant chemotherapy was set up (DERMISHEAD trial). Patients were randomised to receive PBM or placebo treatments from the first day of RT (2×/week) alongside the institutional skincare. The severity of skin reactions was assessed by the N

Radiation therapy (RT) following breast-conserving surgical excision of cancer reduces cancer-related mortality and recurrence.1 However, most patients experience acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) within weeks after beginning RT2; symptoms of ARD, including severe skin erythema, dryness, moist or dry desquamation, and/or ulceration, may interrupt radiotherapy. This can negatively affect patient quality of life (QoL) and cancer outcomes. Acute radiation dermatitis is not to be confused with chronic radiation dermatitis, which can lead to fibrosis, skin atrophy, pigmentation, and telangiectasia m

Radiation therapy is a mainstay for the treatment of primary malignancies and metastatic disease and is associated with several dermatological adverse events that are underreported in the literature. The objective of this paper was to review the literature regarding cutaneous manifestations associated with radiation therapy in order to promote awareness of the cutaneous radiation therapy-associated adverse effects. This extensive literature review was performed using the Pubmed and Embase databases. Studies were reviewed for relevance and critical evidence pertaining to cutaneous manifestation

A protocol for assessment of biological hazard from ultraviolet radiation sources was developed. The protocol utilized both a ultraviolet radiation spectroradiometer and a broadband ultraviolet radiation meter for the determination of the erythemally effective irradiance and the actinic irradiance. A 250 W tungsten halogen lamp operating at 9.5 A was tested with this protocol. It was found that the erythemally effective irradiance varied from 41 microW cm(-2) at 10 cm to 1.5 microW cm(-2) at 50 cm. In the same range of distances, the actinic irradiance decreased from 23 to 0.5 microW cm(-2). T
