Can multiphase dynamic CT angiography provide a better assessment of aortic dissection compared with the standard triphasic protocol?

Background Acute aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening medical emergency. It has been debated whether the multiphase dynamic computed tomography angiography (CTA) protocol is superior to the standard triphasic protocol for revealing the characteristics of AD. Purpose To examine two multiphase dynamic protocols, Dynamic four-dimensional (4D) CTA using the shuttle mode and Flash 4D CTA using the high-pitch mode for the assessment of AD and to compare them with the standard triphasic protocol. Material and Methods A total of 54 consecutive patients were randomly and equally assigned to thr

Automated 3D Cobb Angle Measurement Using U-Net in CT Images of Preoperative Scoliosis Patients.

To propose a deep learning framework "SpineCurve-net" for automated measuring the 3D Cobb angles from computed tomography (CT) images of presurgical scoliosis patients. A total of 116 scoliosis patients were analyzed, divided into a training set of 89 patients (average age 32.4 ± 24.5 years) and a validation set of 27 patients (average age 17.3 ± 5.8 years). Vertebral identification and curve fitting were achieved through U-net and NURBS-net and resulted in a Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve of the spine. The 3D Cobb angles were measured in two ways: the predicted 3D Cobb angle (PRE

Mixed-reality view of cardiac specimens: a new approach to understanding complex intracardiac congenital lesions.

Digital reality is an emerging platform for three-dimensional representation of medical imaging data. In this technical innovation paper, the authors evaluated the accuracy and utility of mixed-reality technology in the morphological evaluation of complex congenital heart disease. The authors converted CT datasets of 12 heart specimens with different subtypes of double-outlet right ventricle to stereoscopic images and interrogated them using a mixed-reality system. The morphological features identified on the stereoscopic models were compared with findings at macroscopic examination of the act

Calcium Scoring for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography: How, When and Why?

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Despite major advances in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, enhanced prevention of ischemic heart disease remains critical to improving the health of individuals and communities. The computed tomographic coronary artery calcium score is an established imaging biomarker that identifies the presence and amount of coronary atherosclerosis in an individual and their future risk for clinical cardiovascular disease and premature cardiovascular death. This article describes the process of performing a

The emerging role of maxillofacial radiology in the diagnosis and management of patients with complex periodontitis.

Contemporary periodontal therapy has evolved to become more interdisciplinary and increasingly involves more complex treatments, including bone and soft-tissue regenerative procedures. Therapeutic options require an imaging modality or combination of techniques that are capable of providing a diagnostic osseous baseline and facilitating quantification of smaller increments of bony change, both loss and additive, which are comparable over time. Intra-oral and panoramic radiography are the modalities most commonly used to identify the location, quantify the amount and the pattern of alveolar bon

MDCT evaluation of ureteral tumors: advantages of 3D reconstruction and volume visualization.

OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the use of CT urography in diagnosing ureteral transitional cell carcinomas, different CT urography protocols, CT findings suggestive of ureteral malignancy, and the importance of 3D reconstructions. CONCLUSION: The ureters can be problematic to evaluate on CT, partly because of difficulties in obtaining adequate ureteral distention and opacification. Proper diagnosis hinges not only on appropriate interpretation of the axial images but also on the utilization of a 3D technique (volume rendering or maximum intensity projection) as an ancillary tool.

Missed lesions at CT colonography: lessons learned.

Misinterpretation at CT colonography (CTC) can result in either a colorectal lesion being missed (false-negative) or a false-positive diagnosis. This review will largely focus on potential missed lesions-and ways to avoid such misses. The general causes of false-negative interpretation at CTC can be broadly characterized and grouped into discrete categories related to suboptimal study technique, specific lesion characteristics, anatomic location, and imaging artifacts. Overlapping causes further increase the likelihood of missing a clinically relevant lesion. In the end, if the technical facto

The importance of vertebral artery proximity to the odontoid process during anterior odontoid approaches.

The proximity of the vertebral artery (VA) to the odontoid process makes it vulnerable to injury during surgery. Knowledge of the quantitative anatomy of the VA groove is therefore necessary. In this study we assessed the spatial relationship between the VA and the odontoid process on cadavers by direct measurement and in patients by CT angiography. Our goal was to measure the distances from the VA and vertebrobasilar junction to the odontoid tip. The VA and odontoid process of 10 craniocervical cadavers ("cadavers") and of 20 patients were evaluated and average measurements obtained. The meas

Cinematic rendering in traumatic musculoskeletal injuries of the lower extremity: a pictorial review.

Musculoskeletal pathologies involve multiple tissue types, most commonly including bone and muscle. This complexity leads to diverse clinical presentations, which complicates diagnosis, management, and triage, particularly in acute trauma cases. Accurate visualization of these injuries requires timely imaging and detailed interpretation of intricate anatomical structures, especially in the emergency department (ED). While conventional radiographs and two-dimensional (2D) computed tomography (CT) remain valuable for evaluating such injuries, a novel three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniq

An accurate, straightforward computer vision algorithm for optimal tumor-feeding visualization in cone-beam computed tomography hepatic arteriography: A preliminary study.

AIM: Although standardized 3D volume rendering techniques (VRT) and embolization guidance visualize and identify tumor-feeding arteries, current vessel tracking software lacks automatic angle recommendations. This forces an operator, e.g. an interventional radiologist, to leave an ongoing procedure to manually manipulate the system and find the best angle for each feeding vessel-requiring time-consuming re-scrubbing. We propose a computer vision algorithm that suggests a rotation/angle in the VRT where a tumor-feeding artery's view is maximized. We focus on hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS:

Abnormalities of the distal common bile duct and ampulla: diagnostic approach and differential diagnosis using multiplanar reformations and 3D imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The distal common bile duct (CBD) and ampulla are extremely difficult sites to evaluate on CT. This article seeks to provide the reader with a framework and algorithmic approach to the evaluation of abnormalities involving the distal CBD and ampulla, including an emphasis on the use of multiplanar reformations and 3D imaging, the morphologic features on CT that suggest the presence of malignancy, and a differential diagnosis for abnormalities in this location. CONCLUSION: In our experience, both the distal CBD and ampulla are common sites of missed diagnoses for radiologists. Avoid

Absence of the celiac trunk: case report using MDCT angiography.

The authors describe a case of a 57-year-old male patient with peripheral vascular disease which presented on MDCT angiography the absence of the celiac trunk (CT). The left gastric artery (LGA), common hepatic artery (CHA), and splenic artery (SA) (with an internal diameter at origin of 3.3, 6.0, and 6.2 mm, respectively) originated directly and independently from the abdominal aorta (AA). The LGA arose from the anterior wall of the AA [27 mm above the origin of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA)]. The SA and CHA arose from the left side of the anterolateral wall of the AA at 19 and 14 mm (
