In experimental studies in male Wistar-rats exerted for determination of trichloroethylene, ethanol and combined action influences on the substance P plasma concentrations. These concentrations were determined by a radioimmunological method. The acute exposure of trichloroethylene and ethanol lead to a significant rise of substance P. We found high substance P concentration peaks, in principle, 4 h after acute exposure and the combined action shows the greatest effect.

An isolate of Trichinella of polar bear origin was studied by isoenzymatic typing. It was found referable to Trichinella nativa. While the Wistar rats proved nearly refractory to this isolate, the Swiss albino mice were highly susceptible. Ninety-one per cent of the cystic lesions in the diaphragm of the polar bear contained viable larvae after over 20 years of acquisition of the infection by the host which is a case of extreme adaptability of the parasite to its host. The anatomo-pathological aspects of these lesions are studied and the zoonotic significance of this isolate examined.

Male germ cells are quite sensitive to interruption in blood flow. Eight weeks after subjection to 45 minutes of testicular ischemia, the spermatogenic epithelium of the rat remains significantly damaged, though other cell types are well preserved. Within triads of male Wistar rats, some animals almost completely abstain from competition for palatable sucrose pellets (so-called poor-performing rats), whereas other rats consistently win the competition (so-called high-performing rats). Unilateral cryptorchidism was induced in Wistar rat pups within 48 hours of birth. Evaluation of fertility was subsequently assessed at 50, 100, and 150 days of age by paternity and daily sperm production. The descended scrotal testis was demonstrated to have a significantly diminished rate of sperm production at 150 days. Paternity studies failed to reflect this dysfunction, cryptorchid and sham-operated control animals having a 58% and 80% ability to produce offspring (P = .44).

The model of calcium paradox was used to test the effect of the calcium entry blocker Diltiazem (concentration 4.0 mumol.l-1) and of the calmodulin inhibitor Trifluoroperazin (concentration 1.0 mumol.l-1). Application of each preparation resulted in improved cardiac function manifested by restoration of the electrical and contractile activity and by increased coronary flow. Both Diltiazem and Trifluoroperazin exerted a protective effect on the preservation of enzymatic activities and of ultrastructure in conditions of impaired calcium homeostasis.

The goal of the present study was to relate previously observed behavioral effects with changes in myelin in the hippocampus following exposure to the industrial solvent 1,1,2-trichloroethylene (TCE). Percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy has shown encouraging results in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. An experimental study was undertaken using a rat sciatic nerve model to elucidate the mechanism of action of anhydrous glycerol and to study the acute changes which develop within one week. As a method for keeping a tooth pulp vital that has undergone inflammatory alterations, curative anesthesia is controversial. Generally accepted ideas on the mechanism of action and on therapeutic concepts are lacking. Animal experiments using Laser Doppler flowmetry and intravital microscopy are to demonstrate that, under defined conditions, local anesthesia may reduce the effects of neurogenic pulpitis. A therapeutic recommendation, however, cannot be given.

Hypertrophy and hyperplasia of islet tissue, established by morphometry, were proved in the pancreas of rats, treated chronically for a period of 2 months (with urbason-50 mg/kg of body mass). B-cells were granulated. Structures with myelin-like form of membranes were observed in some of them by electron microscope. Mixed islet B-acinar cells were established as well. These data were possibly a morphological expression of stimulating action of urbason on B-cells of Langerhans islets.

This study was performed to observe the susceptibility of dogs and cats as definitive hosts of Paragonimus iloktsuenensis. The metacercariae of this fluke were obtained from Sesarma dehaani collected at a focus near the mouth of Sumjin river in November, 1986 and February, 1987.
