Effect of team training on patients' ability to complete MRI examinations.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Assess whether staff training in advanced rapport skills and self-hypnotic relaxation techniques reduces noncompletion rates during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS AND MATERIALS: All staff of a free-standing MRI facility was invited to 3 hours of preparatory communication lectures. Half of the practice was then engaged in intensive training. Clerical personnel and nonlicensed health care professionals received training in advanced rapport skills only (8 hours); licensed health care professionals were trained in advanced rapport skills plus rapid hypnotic te

Pilot study of the effect of ultraviolet light on pain and mood in fibromyalgia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of effective systemic or adequate symptomatic treatment for pain associated with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Anecdotes suggest ultraviolet (UV) light may be of some benefit. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to determine if UV is effective in ameliorating chronic pain in persons with FMS. METHODS: Nineteen subjects with FMS were enrolled in a controlled trial of UV and non-UV (control) tanning beds for 2 weeks, followed by randomization to receive UV or non-UV (control) exposure for 6 additional weeks. A follow-up interview was conducted 4 weeks after

A cognitive-behavioral intervention program for students with special reading disabilities.

Interaction among cognitive, meta-cognitive, and emotional factors seems to play a determining part in achievement behavior and especially in scholastic performance. In this study some preliminary results are presented of the implementation of a multidimensional cognitive-behavioral psychoeducational program especially designed for students with reading disabilities in which parents and teachers also take part. The aim of the program was to provide students with appropriate emotional and cognitive skills with which to address their learning problems. First results on the efficacy of the implem

Long-lasting reductions of spasticity induced by skin electrical stimulation.

We studied the effects of electrical stimulation of the skin on upper extremity spasticity in nine hemiparetic stroke subjects. The effects were quantified by comparing reflex torque responses elicited during ramp and hold angular perturbations of the elbow recorded before and after low-intensity skin stimulation. Electrical stimulation was applied to skin over the biceps muscle for a period of ten minutes at a 20 Hz frequency, pulse duration 0.1 ms, with an intensity level below motor threshold but above sensory threshold. In seven of the nine subjects, stimulation of skin over spastic muscle

Relaxation pretraining, pulse wave velocity and thermal biofeedback in the treatment of essential hypertension.

Twelve white male subjects with a physician's diagnosis of essential hypertension participated in the study over a 3- to 4-month period (23-38 sessions). Subjects were assigned to one of four sequences of training in which the order of presentation of pulse wave velocity (PWV) or thermal feedback, and presence or absence of relaxation pretraining were varied. The overall effectiveness of the treatment program was demonstrated by average blood pressure decreases of 8.8 mm Hg/4.1 mm Hg from initial session measures to follow-up one month after completion of the program. Systolic pressures were s

Behaviour analysis and treatment of essential hypertensives.

Various relaxation techniques have the potential to bring about promising blood pressure (BP) reductions in essential hypertension; but the treatment gains often fail to be sustained over a prolonged period of time. Until now, behavioural treatment approaches have not included efforts to increase patient awareness of situations that provoke BP elevations. In our study, numerous BP measurements were therefore taken In various situations by approximately 120 essential hypertensives. These measures were used to acquaint the patients with their own BP variability, to help them understand psycholog

Biofeedback training in the therapy of dyshidrosis.

Biofeedback training for hand warming and relaxation was used with five patients with severe dyshidrotic eczema who were poorly responsive to conventional therapy. Improvement was seen in all five patients, especially those who most noted flaring of their disease under stress. Biofeedback is being used in the treatment of diverse stress-related disorders, and may have potential in dermatologic diseases.

Activation of an Endogenous Opsin 3 Light Receptor Mediates Photo-Relaxation of Pre-Contracting Late Gestation Human Uterine Smooth Muscle Ex Vivo.

Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) remains a worldwide healthcare challenge. Preterm labor (PTL) is thought to be the largest reversible cause of sPTB, but current tocolytic therapies are ineffective and associated with systemic side effects from chronic use. Therefore, identifying novel mechanisms that promote human uterine smooth muscle (hUSM) relaxation is essential to improving clinical management of PTL. Here, we aimed to determine if an extraocular opsin receptor (OPN 3,4,5) system is expressed in pregnant hUSM and to characterize how photo-mediated relaxation of pre-contracting hUSM may b

Emotional awareness and expression training improves irritable bowel syndrome: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical guidelines identify several psychological treatments for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS patients, however, have elevated trauma, life stress, relationship conflicts, and emotional avoidance, which few therapies directly target. We tested the effects of emotional awareness and expression training (EAET) compared to an evidence-based comparison condition-relaxation training-and a waitlist control condition. METHODS: Adults with IBS (N=106; 80% female, Mean age=36 years) were randomized to EAET, relaxation training, or waitlist control. Both EAET and relaxation

Cardiac-directed parvalbumin transgene expression in mice shows marked heart rate dependence of delayed Ca2+ buffering action.

Relaxation abnormalities are prevalent in heart failure and contribute to clinical outcomes. Disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis in heart failure delays relaxation by prolonging the intracellular Ca2+ transient. We sought to speed cardiac relaxation in vivo by cardiac-directed transgene expression of parvalbumin (Parv), a cytosolic Ca2+ buffer normally expressed in fast-twitch skeletal muscle. A key feature of Parv's function resides in its Ca2+/Mg2+ binding affinities that account for delayed Ca2+ buffering in response to the intracellular Ca2+ transient. Cardiac Parv expression decreased sarcopla

Combined rehabilitation therapy with botulinum toxin to the upper limbs for acute spinal cord injury: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) and incomplete paralysis may experience muscle immobilization due to functional impairment of agonist and antagonist muscles. This can induce spasticity and pain, with the risk of contracture increasing as the period of immobilization increases. This could be aggravated by pain, which interferes with rehabilitation. There is no established treatment for pain and joint contractures caused by acute SCI. Botulinum therapy plays a role in relieving muscle tension. Here, we report a case of acute SCI in which botulinum therapy was administered.

Enhanced functional connectivity between insular subregions correlates with the efficacy of music and instruction-guided relaxation in depression.

Music and instruction-guided relaxation (MIGR) is a complementary therapeutic tool used in the treatment of the major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural mechanism that underlies the effect of MIGR on MDD patients is not known. Twenty-three right-handed MDD patients and 23 age-, sex-, handedness-, and educational level-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Resting-state functional MRI data were acquired from patients before and after MIGR and from healthy controls. The relationships between insular subregion-based functional connectivity and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamil

[Chronic insomnia: treatment methods based on the current "3P" model of insomnia].

Authors consider one of the popular models of the pathogenesis of chronic insomnia--"3P" model. It explains the origin and course of insomnia on the basis of interaction of three factors: predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating. The role of each group of factors and its connection to the cerebral hyperarousal state is discussed. Different variants of cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacological treatment of chronic insomnia are described.
