Epidemiological studies on the animal reservoir of Gambiense sleeping sickness. Part III. Characterization of trypanozoon stocks by isoenzymes and sensitivity to human serum.

Polymorphism in 12 enzymes, as shown by electrophoresis on thin-layer starch-gel, was examined in 88 stocks of trypanosomes of the subgenus Trypanozoon isolated from man and animals in the Ivory Coast and Upper Volta. Three of the enzyme profiles seen in trypanosomes from man in the Ivory Coast were exactly the same as in trypanosomes from local domestic pigs and from various game animals and a bovine in the Upper volta, thus confirming previous evidence that human trypanosomiasis is a zoonosis in West Africa. Altogether 9 zymodemes were found in man; one was exactly the same as another from t

Protective Effect of Dietary Fiber on Blood Pressure and Vascular Dysfunction Through Regulation of Sympathetic Tone and Immune Response in Genetic Hypertension.

The mechanisms underlying the antihypertensive effect of dietary fibers remain poorly understood. This study investigates whether dietary fiber supplementation can prevent cardiovascular damage and high blood pressure in a genetic model of neurogenic hypertension. Six-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and their respective normotensive control, Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), were divided into four groups: Untreated WKY, untreated SHR, SHR treated with resistant starch (SHR + RS), and SHR treated with inulin-type fructans (SHR + ITF) for 12 weeks. Additionally, a faecal microbiota tr…

Bio-Accessibility of Phenolic Compounds from Green Banana-Fortified Bread During Simulated Digestion and Colonic Fermentation.

Functional foods are gaining heightened popularity in diet modifications. Green bananas contain a significant quantity of resistant starch, dietary fibre, and phytochemicals that demonstrate strong antioxidant properties, particularly due to the high concentration of polyphenols. The community demand for incorporating these essential components into food products, such as bread, has increased. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in the content and bio-accessibility of phenolic compounds in bread enriched with 5, 10, and 15% of Australian green banana powder (GBF) f…

Nutritional composition of diets for inducing and maintaining remission in inflammatory bowel diseases: from bedside to plate.

There is growing interest in the role of dietary therapies in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including Crohn's diseas … ds through reduced intake of animal-based foods and increased consumption of fermentable fibers and resistant starch. For maintenance of remission in both CD and UC, data supporting specific dietary approaches are currently limited. However, the emphasis shifts toward sustainability, favoring flexible, plant-based, minimally processed dietary patterns, such as the …

Lynch Syndrome: From Multidisciplinary Management to Precision Prevention.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lynch syndrome (LS) is currently one of the most prevalent hereditary cancer conditions, accounting for 3% of all color … the MMR genes. Emerging data from randomized controlled trials suggest possible preventive roles of resistant starch and/or aspirin in LS. Vaccination with immunogenic frameshift peptides appears to be a promising approach for both the treatment and prevention of LS-associated cancers, as evidenced by pre-clinical and preliminary phase 1/2a studies. CONCLUSIONS: …

Maternal fiber-rich diet promotes early-life intestinal development in offspring through milk-derived extracellular vesicles carrying miR-146a-5p.

BACKGROUNDS: The intestinal development in early life is profoundly influenced by multiple biological components of breast milk, in which milk-derived extracellular vesicles (mEVs) contain a large amount of vertically transmitted signal from the mother. However, little is known about how maternal fiber-rich diet regulates offspring intestinal development by influencing the mEVs. RESULTS: In this study, we found that maternal resistant starch (RS) consumption during late gestation and lactation improved the growth and intestinal health of offspring. The mEVs in breast milk are the primary fact…

Integrated gut microbiome and metabolome analyses identified fecal biomarkers for bowel movement regulation by Bifidobacterium longum BB536 supplementation: A RCT.

BACKGROUND: Bifidobacterium longum BB536 supplementation can be used to regulate bowel movements in various people, including healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); however, individuals vary in their responses to B. longum BB536 treatment. One putative factor is the gut microbiota; recent studies have reported that the gut microbiota mediates the effects of diet or drugs on the host. Here, we investigated intestinal features, such as the microbiome and metabolome, related to B. longum BB536 effectiveness in increasing bowel movement frequency. RESULTS: A randomized

Pyrodextrin enhances intestinal function through changing the intestinal microbiota composition and metabolism in early weaned piglets.

Pyrodextrin (PD) is prepared from starch by heat treatment and is resistant to amylase. We hypothesized that PD might have prebiotic potential affecting the microbiota composition, because it contains a non-digestible portion that may behave as dietary fiber. This study investigated the effects of PD supplementation on growth performance, gut morphology, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and the bacterial community in weaned piglets receiving dietary supplementation of 0.5% PD. The piglets in the PD (treated) groups showed greater antioxidant capacity and feed efficiency (P < 0.05), as well as

Analysis of GBE1 mutations via protein expression studies in glycogen storage disease type IV: A report on a non-progressive form with a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage disease type IV (GSD IV), caused by GBE1 mutations, has a quite wide phenotypic variation. While the classic hepatic form and the perinatal/neonatal neuromuscular forms result in early mortality, milder manifestations include non-progressive form (NP-GSD IV) and adult polyglucosan body disease (APBD). Thus far, only one clinical case of a patient with compound heterozygous mutations has been reported for the molecular analysis of NP-GSD IV. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular basis in a NP-GSD IV patient via protein expression analysis and to obtain a clear

Short-chain fatty acids and commensal microbiota in the faeces of severely malnourished children with cholera rehydrated with three different carbohydrates.

BACKGROUND: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) liberated by fermentation of complex carbohydrates might stimulate water and salt absorption, and provide energy. The aim of the study was to assess the number and proportion of faecal bacteria and the concentration of SCFAs of severely malnourished children with cholera receiving oral rehydration solution (ORS) containing glucose, amylase-resistant starch (ARS) or rice. METHODS: Serial faecal samples were collected from 30 malnourished children with cholera until rehydration and partial nutritional recovery. SCFAs were identified and quantitated by…

Green banana reduces clinical severity of childhood shigellosis: a double-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mature green banana (GB) fruit is rich in amylase-resistant starch that stimulates colonic production of short-chain fatty acids (referred to as fatty acid) and is useful in treating diarrheal diseases. We studied therapeutic effects of GB in childhood shigellosis by determining colonic fatty acid production in a double-blind, randomized, controlled, clinical trial. METHODS: Seventy-three children aged 6 to 60 months with severe bloody dysentery caused by Shigella infection were either given a rice-based diet (54 kcal/dL), with cooked GB (250 g/L) (n = 34) or without GB (…

Salicylic Acid Cooperates With Lignin and Sucrose Signals to Alleviate Waxy Maize Leaf Senescence Under Heat Stress.

Leaf senescence induced by high temperature (HT) has become a primary factor limiting maize yield, particularly during the filling stage. Exogenous salicylic acid (SA) has emerged as an effective strategy to mitigate leaf senescence and HT-induced damage, though its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the regulatory mechanism of SA application on waxy maize subjected to HT during the early filling stage. Compared to HT alone, exogenous SA alleviated the inhibition of photosynthesis and oxidative damage by enhancing the activities of enzymes involved in photosynthesis

Regulation and mechanism of Bletilla striata polysaccharide on delaying aging in Drosophila melanogaster.

Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) is a natural bioactive compound known for its promising health benefits, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, its potential in combating aging remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the anti-aging effects of BSP in the Drosophila melanogaster model. The results show that BSP supplementation significantly extends the lifespan of flies in a concentration-dependent manner, with the most pronounced effects observed at a concentration of 3 mg/mL. Lifespan extension is associated with enhanced antio
