A review of behavioral treatments used for Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a genetic disorder resulting in hyperuricemia, choreoathetosis, mental retardation, and self-mutilation. The most salient feature of this disorder is the self-injurious behavior (SIB). Although the utility of behavioral interventions with SIB has been well documented, behavioral interventions with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome have been limited in number and long-term success. This article reviews the behavioral treatments that have been used in treating individuals with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of these methods. Suggestions for future dire

Conditioned apomorphine-induced turning in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats.

Apomorphine-induced turning has been used to evaluate the extent of unilateral nigrostriatal denervation after 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions and subsequent functional striatal reinnervation by catecholaminergic grafts. It has been noted that the pregraft rotational pattern is usually double peaked and that fetal ventral mesencephalic grafts or dopaminergic drugs will alter the second peak but leave the first relatively unchanged. We hypothesized that the first peak may be the result of factors extrinsic to the nigrostriatal dopamine system, specifically a conditioned turning response, and

Effects of maternal stress on puberty, fertility and aggressive behavior of female mice from different intrauterine positions.

We examined the effects of maternal stress (bright light and heat) during the last third of pregnancy on subsequent reproductive and behavioral characteristics of female mice from different intrauterine positions. Female mice that develop in utero between two male fetuses (2M females) differ from females that develop between two female fetuses (0M females) in their serum concentrations of both testosterone and estradiol during the fetal period of sexual differentiation. After birth, 0M and 2M females differ in a wide range of reproductive characteristics. We examined the effects of maternal st

Plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol in pigs: effects of time of day on basal and stressor-altered concentrations.

An initial study was conducted to establish the presence in plasma of diurnal rhythms of immunoreactive porcine adrenocorticotropic hormone (pACTH) and cortisol in castrated male pigs (barrows). Fourteen barrows with jugular catheters were bled at 6-hr intervals for 24 hr. Significant changes in plasma pACTH were evident with peak levels (61 +/- 6 pg/ml) at 0100-0700 hr and a trough (38 +/- 4 pg/ml) at 1900 hr. Changes (P less than 0.05) in plasma cortisol were also present in barrows with a peak (44 +/- 6 ng/ml) at 0700 hr and a trough (21 +/- 5 ng/ml) at 1900 hr. Plasma norepinephrine and ep

Effects of morphine and naloxone on stress ulcer formation and gastric acid secretion.

The effect of both acute and chronic morphine and naloxone on restraint-stress gastric ulcer formation and on basal gastric acid secretion were examined in the conscious rat. Acute morphine administration produced a dose-related decrease in stress ulceration and basal gastric acid secretion. Acute naloxone treatment resulted in a dose-related increase in stress ulcer formation and markedly augmented gastric acid secretion. Naloxone (4.0 mg/kg) antagonized the ulcer-reducing effects at all doses of morphine tested (4.0-32.0 mg/kg). Morphine-dependent rats, restrained during spontaneous or nalox

Hyperalimentation in primates. A nutritional model.

To establish the subhuman primate as an effective laboratory animal in parenteral nutrition research, 18 male macaque monkeys were adapted to chronic chair restraint and maintained on intravenous nutrition for 1- and 2-week periods. The animals remained in the restraint chairs for 11.6 +/- (2.3) weeks and the inferior vena cava catheters remained for 53 +/- (7.8) days. Catheter and metabolic complications during intravenous nutrition infusion were few and morbidity was low. The animals maintained weight, serum albumin, and serum transferrin levels as well as a positive nitrogen balance during

Addressing psychological trauma in dementia sufferers.

Research has demonstrated that dementia sufferers may be victims of recent physical assault by family caregivers and other patients and staff in long-term care facilities. Some dementia sufferers have also been victims of violence at other points in their lives from events such as combat, physical and sexual abuse, natural and manmade disasters, and the like. These violent events may result in psychological trauma and the psychological aftermath of these violent incidents may last until death, if it is not treated. The purpose of this paper is to outline some intervention strategies regarding

The effectiveness of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on binge eating in patients with obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), widely used for weight management and type 2 diabetes, may reduce binge eating behaviours and body dissatisfaction, but there are concerns that they might increase eating restraint. We evaluated the effectiveness of GLP-1RAs for binge eating severity and related eating behaviours. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing any GLP-1RA with placebo or active comparators reporting validated measures of binge eating, disinhibited eating, and loss of control eating.

The safe management of physical aggression using multi-element positive practices in community settings.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral strategies often are used with people with acquired brain injury. Most involve the application of contingent reinforcement and punishment for selected behaviors or teaching important skills to overcome the challenging behaviors. However, consequential intervention and other strategies that depend on new learning may be precluded when working with individuals with significant short-term memory impairment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The present case study reports the results of non-consequential strategies based on a positive, multi-element model to address physical aggressio

Therapeutic effect of adjuvant therapy added to constraint-induced movement therapy in patients with subacute to chronic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: This review investigated the effectiveness of adjuvant therapy combined with constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in improving the paretic upper limb functionality in adults with stroke sequelae during the subacute to chronic rehabilitation phase. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT), electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and MEDLINE, were searched. We included RCTs that investigated the outcomes of adjuvant therapy (i.e. other therapies) added to CIMT compared with CIMT alone. Key tri

Does physical activity associated with chronic food restriction alleviate anxiety like behaviour, in female mice?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by excessive weight loss, persistent food restriction and inappropriate physical activity relative to declining energy balance. The comorbidity with depression and/or anxiety disorders might contribute to the "chronicization" of the disease. We aimed here to question first the link between physical activity and anxiety from a clinical investigation of AN patients (n = 206). Then, using a rodent model mimicking numerous physiological and metabolic alterations commonly seen in AN patients, we examined whether 1) chronic food restriction i

Risk factors for venous thromboembolism among psychiatric inpatients: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric inpatients have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). While previous studies have identified baseline risk factors among psychiatric inpatients, systematic data on in-hospital risk factors associated with clinical conditions or treatment remain scarce. This study aimed to identify specific risk factors for VTE among psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center case-control study was conducted at Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital, Japan. Using the electronic medical record system, data on patients newly diagnosed with VTE during th

Delirium in acute stroke: A prospective, cross-sectional, cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder of attention and awareness that develops over a short time and fluctuates in severity. Although delirium has been extensively studied in intensive care units, the incidence of delirium in stroke units and its predictors in stroke patients need further investigation. The endpoints of our study were incidence of delirium in acute stroke and the risk factors that predispose to this condition. METHODS: Patients were consecutively enrolled in a stroke unit from April to October 2020. Inclusion criteria were: age ≥18 years, acute strok

Eucalyptol Ameliorates Neuroendocrine Stress-Aggravated Rheumatoid Arthritis Through Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, and Chondroprotective Mechanisms Associated with NF-κB and MAPK Signaling Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a lingering autoimmune disorder typified by synovial inflammation, oxidative imbalance, and advanced articular damage. Psychological and physical stress are known to exacerbate disease progression by enhancing inflammatory signaling and disrupting redox homeostasis. Although methotrexate remains a first-line therapy, its long-term use is accompanied by adverse effects, necessitating safer adjunctive strategies. Eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), a naturally occurring monoterpene, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential; however, its role in

Advanced paramedics' restraint decision-making when managing acute behavioural disturbance (ABD) in the UK pre-hospital ambulance setting: A qualitative investigation.

Acute behavioural disturbance (ABD), sometimes called 'excited delirium', is a medical emergency. In the UK, some patients presenting with ABD are managed by advanced paramedics (APs), however little is known about how APs make restraint decisions. The aim of this research is to explore the decisions made by APs when managing restraint in the context of ABD, in the UK pre-hospital ambulance setting. Seven semi-structured interviews were undertaken with APs. All participants were experienced APs with post-registration, post-graduate advanced practice education and qualifications. The resulting

Medium-intensity aerobic exercise can relieve mice anxiety by activating cannabinoid type 1 receptors on medial prefrontal cortex GABAergic neurons.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent, yet current pharmacological treatments often have limited efficacy and adverse effects. As a safe and accessible non-pharmacological intervention, physical exercise has shown promise in alleviating anxiety; however, its precise neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate how moderate-intensity aerobic exercise reduces anxiety, with a specific focus on the role of distinct cell populations within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Using a chronic restraint stress (CRS) mouse model, we combined behavioral tests, protein analysis, phar

Bimanual training and constraint-induced movement therapy in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) promotes hand function using intensive unimanual practice along with restraint of the less-affected hand. CIMT has not been compared with a treatment with equivalent dosing frequency and intensity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). OBJECTIVES: The authors report a randomized trial comparing CIMT and a bimanual intervention (hand-arm intensive bimanual therapy; HABIT) that maintains the intensity of practice associated with CIMT but where children are engaged in functional bimanual tasks. METHODS: A total of 42 participants with hemipl

Comparison of intramuscular haloperidol and other short-acting injectable antipsychotics for management of acute agitation in an adult inpatient psychiatry unit.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the optimal antipsychotic for acute agitation. Whereas haloperidol is frequently used and has proven efficacy, second generation antipsychotics show similar efficacy and improved safety and tolerability. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of short-acting intramuscular (IM) haloperidol versus other IM antipsychotics for acute agitation in adults admitted to an inpatient psychiatry unit. METHODS: This was a retrospective medical record review of patients who received 1 or more doses of a short-acting IM antipsychotic, including chlorpromazine,
