The origin of efferent labyrinthine fibres: a comparative study in vertebrates.

Parent cells of efferent acoustic and efferent vestibular fibers were determined anatomically in all classes of vertebrates by use of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. These neurons were found in the brainstem, in particular in the reticular formation. In the goldfish, efferent labyrinthine neurons could be demonstrated in a medial position (lateral to the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis). In the frog, efferent neurons appeared more lateral, dorsomedial to the facial motor nucleus. In reptiles and birds, efferent acoustic neurons separate from efferent vestibular neuron…

Infantile hypoventilation syndrome, neurenteric cyst, and syringobulbia.

Hypoventilation syndrome was observed in an infant with a neurenteric cyst. She died at 9 months of age following episodic bradycardia and t … la, the right nucleus ambiguus, the right fasciculus and nucleus solitarius, the right mediolateral reticular formation, and the right dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus at the level of the obex. This morphologic distribution is attributed to the intraspinal rupture and upward extension of the mucinous contents of the cyst, and appears to be responsible for the hypove …

[Comparative clinical electroencephalographic study of cycloserine and terizidon tolerance].

The aim of the study was comparative investigation of cycloserin and terizidone tolerance by patients with the lung tuberculosis. The invest … ain. However, terizidone promoted an increase of the activating effect of the ascending part of the reticular formation of the brain stem to a lesser extent than cycloserine. Terizidone in a dose of 0.25 g 3 times a day was well tolerated by the patients with concomitant psycho-neurological impairements.

Long-term recruitment of peripheral immune cells to brain scars after a neonatal insult.

Although brain scars in adults have been extensively studied, there is less data available regarding scar formation during the neonatal period, and the involvement of peripheral immune cells in this process remains unexplored in neonates. Using a murine model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and confocal microscopy, we characterized the scarring process and examined the recruitment of peripheral immune cells to cortical and hippocampal scars for up to 1 year post-insult. Regional differences in scar formation were observed, including the presence of reticular fibrotic networks

Myofibroblast programming blocks differentiation of TLS-organizing fibroblastic reticular cells in pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is strongly resistant to immunotherapy. However, recent evidence shows that some PDAC tumors contain tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) associated with improved survival. Why TLS forms in some tumors but not others remains elusive. Using a lymphotoxin beta receptor (LTBR) agonist, we observe the induction of TLS-aggregates in some murine PDAC tumor models but not others. The phenotypes of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in TLS-resistant models are myofibroblastic (myCAF), whereas TLS-permissive models are enriched with reticular-CAF (rCAF) subsets.

The use of a perimeatal-based penile skin flap to cover the repair of a tubularized incised plate urethroplasty: from experimental surgery to clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the efficacy and safety of a perimeatal-based penile skin flap for neourethral coverage after repair of distal hypospadias with tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIPU). METHODS: In 12 New Zealand white rabbits a ventral urethral defect was created and reconstruction was accomplished with continuous suture. An epithelialized defect-based flap was harvested from the penile skin to cover the repaired defect. The animals were euthanized on the 28th postoperative day and their penises were processed for microscopic examination. In 32 children with distal

Metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 7 in the dorsal striatum oppositely modulates pain in sham and neuropathic rats.

The study investigated the role of the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 7 (mGluR7) in pain signalling in the dorsal striatum of sham and neuropathic rats. Supraspinal circuitries involved in the dorsal striatum control of pain were also explored. In the sham rats, microinjection of N,N'-bis(diphenylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine (AMN082), a selective mGluR7 positive allosteric modulator, into the dorsal striatum, facilitated pain, increased the activity of the ON cells and inhibited the activity of the OFF cells in the rostral ventromedial medulla, and decreased glutamate levels in the dorsa

Gene expression in autonomic areas of the medulla and the central nucleus of the amygdala in rats during and after space flight.

During space flight astronauts show vestibular-related changes in balance, eye movements, and spontaneous and reflex control of cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal function, sometimes associated with space motion sickness. These symptoms undergo compensation over time. Here we used changes in the expression of two immediate-early gene (IEG) products to identify cellular and molecular changes occurring in autonomic brainstem regions of adult male albino rats killed at different times during the Neurolab Space Mission (STS-90). Both direct effects of gravitational changes, as well a

Adjunctive brainstem behaviors in the rat.

UNLABELLED: Adjunctive behaviors refers to behaviors that are "out of context" and/or excessive in amount. The terminology was first used fo … speculate that brainstem behaviors are innate adjunctive drives that are generated in the brainstem reticular formation. They are monitored by the cortex and partially modified by environmental and cortical inputs.

Electrophysiological and pharmacological studies of somatosensory reflex myoclonus.

Reflex myoclonus displays symptomatological heterogeneity involving the cortical and brain stem types that seem to originate above the spinal cord. Three cases of generalized myoclonus proved to be spontaneous and stimulus-sensitive, and increased with action. Segmental spinal myoclonus was spontaneous, stimulus-sensitive and rhythmical and decreased with action. Two cases of post-anoxic myoclonus seemed to be of the reticular reflex in which myoclonus was manifested in all muscles, particularly the proximal ones, and for which the EEG showed no spikes preceding myoclonus. The evoked electromy

Behavioral effects of selective midbrain raphe lesions in the rat.

Lesions were produced in the median (n = 8), dorsal (n = 7) or both (n = 7) midbrain raphe nuclei and their effects on behavior (days 16-54 postoperatively) compared to that of controls (n = 9). In addition, forebrain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concentration were determined. Only the median and combined lesion groups showed increased running wheel and open field activity, as well as enhanced reactivity to novel stimuli and environmental change. None of the lesion groups, however, showed changes in home cage activity on postoperative day 21. Although all lesion groups were deficient in the acqu

Formation of actin mesh structures and alpha-smooth muscle actin dynamics in fibroblasts contribute to dermal regeneration in mouse fetus.

In adult mammals and other highly developed animals, incomplete wound healing, scar formation, and fibrosis occur. No treatment for complete tissue regeneration is currently available. However, in mice, at up to 13 days of gestation, early embryonic wounds regenerate without visible scarring. In mouse fetuses, actin cable formation at the epidermal wound margin contributes to regeneration after wounding; however, the relationship between actin behavior and dermal regeneration or scar formation by myofibroblasts is unknown. In the present study, we observed actin dynamics in the wound dermis of

Delayed-onset continuous bruxism with olivary hypertrophy after top of the basilar syndrome.

Delayed-onset continuous bruxism due to brain stem infarction has not yet been reported. A 49-year old man presented with quadriplegia and ophthalmoplegia. Brain MRI showed acute infarction in the bilateral midbrain, right thalamus and the superior cerebellum. One month later, the patient developed bruxism which persisted during sleep. A palatal myoclonus was not observed. Follow up MRI taken 4 months later showed bilateral olivary hypertrophy. We suggest that the patient's bruxism may be related to the olivary hypertrophy. The bruxism generator may be located in the pontine-reticular-formatio

Histo- and immuno-pathological and electron microscopy studies of the splenic red pulps of schistosomiasis mansoni patients.

The histo- and immuno-pathological and electron microscopy (EM.) of the splenic red pulps studies were carried out for schistosomiasis mansoni patients and normal controls. The main pathological processes were interstitial haemorrhages, congestion, proliferation and hyperplasia of the red pulps of the schistosomiasis mansoni patients. The IgG showed marked reaction, moderate with IgA and mild with IgM. The E.M. showed an increase in the size of the different types of the reticular cells particularly those of the nuclear membrane with type II, nuclear degeneration, deposition of fibrin threads,
