Increased cardio-ankle vascular index values in patients with acute branch retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: Patients with retinal vein occlusions (RVOs) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Arterial stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events. Our aim is to evaluate the arterial stiffness in patients with acute branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) by using cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). METHODS: This prospective study included 42 patients (18 male, mean age 57.5 ± 11.3) with acute BRVO and a matched control group (by age, sex, and presence of hypertension) with 70 (26 male, mean age 54.4 ± 9.4) patients. All patients and control subjects underwent com…

Relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor and macular edema in retinal vein branch obstruction.

PURPOSE: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with cystoid macular edema (CME). Monitoring changes in VEGF is crucial for evaluating treatment but requires vitreous or aqueous humor sampling, which hampers its clinical application. We investigated the correlation between VEGF and protein concentration in the aqueous humor (flare) and whether this could be used to monitor treatment-related VEGF changes. DESIGN: This retrospective observational study involved 19 previously untreated patients with BRVO. Aqueous humor was obtain…

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is one of the most common occurring retinal vascular abnormalities. The pathogenesis of BRVO is thought to involve both retinal vein compression and damage to the vessel wall, possibly leading to thrombus formation at sites where retinal arterioles cross retinal veins. The most common cause of visual loss in patients with BRVO is macular oedema (MO). Grid or focal laser photocoagulation has been shown to reduce the risk of visual loss and improve visual acuity (VA) in up to two thirds of individuals with MO secondary to BRVO, however, limitation…

Movement of intraretinal fluid from distant branch retinal vein occlusion to the submacular space.

BACKGROUND: Extramacular branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) occasionally causes serous macular detachment. We studied the movement of extravasated fluid from BRVO lesions to the submacular space. METHODS: We examined nine eyes from nine patients with serous retinal detachment caused by extramacular BRVO. In addition to a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, optical coherence tomography was performed in all nine eyes. Six of the patients also underwent fluorescein angiography. RESULTS: Visual acuity ranged from 0.03 to 0.9 (median 0.5). All nine eyes showed localized macular detachment and…

[Posterior scleritis associated with central retinal vein occlusion and cystoid macular edema: case report].

A case of posterior scleritis associated with central retinal vein occlusion and cystoid macular edema is reported. With this case, we noticed how the disease can be aggressive and how the visual acuity can be compromised. However, the correct treatment can improve the ocular changes with visual improvement. We also alert to the care with the use of high doses of corticosteroids.

Impaired aortic stiffness and pulse wave velocity in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Aortic distensibility (AD) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) reflect arterial stiffness, which is linked to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in different diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, all of which are also common risk factors in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). In the present study, we aimed to determine whether arterial stiffness in different segments of the arterial tree is increased in patients with BRVO. METHODS: The study group consisted of 35 patients with BRVO (20 female, 15 male, mean age: 55.9+/-6.8) …

Homocysteine, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T polymorphism, and risk of retinal vein occlusion: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations and homozygosity for the thermolabile variant of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene as risk factors for retinal vascular occlusive disease. DESIGN: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is an important cause of vision loss. Early meta-analyses showed that tHcy was associated with an increased risk of RVO, but a significant number of new studies have been published. PARTICIPANTS AND/OR CONTROLS: RVO patients and controls. METHODS: Data sources included MEDLINE, Web of Science, and PubMed searches …

Central retinal vein occlusion in a sickle cell trait carrier after a cycling race.

A 26-yr-old man with sickle cell trait (SCT) suddenly lost visual acuity in the left eye after a cycling race in hot tropical environment. The cause was massive central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) with hemorrhaging that rapidly worsened to neovascular glaucoma. Although medically treated, the eye is now marked by total retinal detachment. Cardiovascular function assessment shows no electrocardiographic abnormalities, no anomaly in the supra-aortic tree, and no evidence of structural heart disease. Although normal coagulation markers values (i.e., activated partial thromboplastin time, prothr…

Central retinal vein occlusion in an Army ranger with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most prevalent human enzyme deficiency, affecting an estimated 400 million people worldwide. G6PD deficiency increases erythrocyte vulnerability to oxidative stress and may precipitate episodes of hemolysis when individuals are exposed to triggering agents. Although central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) does occur in G6PD-deficient individuals, G6PD-deficient individuals exposed to oxidative stressors have not been previously reported to have an increase in CRVO incidence. This is a case of an Army Ranger who deployed to Afghanistan wi…
