Asbestos exposure: a potential cause of retroperitoneal fibrosis.

The etiology of retroperitoneal fibrosis is unknown in 70% of the cases. The aim of our study was to examine the possible association between occupational asbestos exposure and retroperitoneal fibrosis; only two cases have been reported in the literature. We gathered all the cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis diagnosed in the Tampere University Hospital between 1987 and 1995. We examined their hospital records to evaluate the possible etiology of the disease. We also sent a structured questionnaire to all living patients (10/13) to obtain information on their asbestos exposure. The chest radiog…

Retroperitoneal fibrosis: a report of complete colonic obstruction.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a disease entity rarely encountered by the general surgeon. In most cases, ureteral stricture is the underlying problem requiring lysis of fibrotic adhesions. However, infrequently, the gastrointestinal tract may become involved. The following report describes the complications of intestinal obstruction by RPF in one of our patients. The discussion then focuses on the need for early diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal invasion by RPF.

Successful treatment of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis with steroids.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) may cause ureteric obstruction with renal damage. Ureterolysis with intraperitonealization of the ureter is commonly used as primary treatment. We gave corticosteroids for two years to six patients, four males and two females, between 40 and 56 years of age. one of the patients is in his tenth month of treatment and another in the fourth month. Between 4 and 74 months (mean 40.4 months) after initiation of treatment, kidney function had improved, or was preserved in previously functioning renal units, and the patients were free from symptoms. We conclu…

[Retroperitoneal fibrosis with involvement up to the mediastinal space].

A 60-year-old man presented with sudden palpitations in September 1993, and was admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation … enal arteries, and caused narrowing of the ureter and left hydronephrosis. Based on these findings, retroperitoneal fibrosis was diagnosed. Treatment with steroids caused the lesion to shrink.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis due to malignancy: a case report.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is idiopathic in two thirds of cases and is found most commonly as an isolated fibrotic plaque centered over the lumbar spine and entrapping one or both ureters. It has been postulated that fibrosis in the idiopathic cases results from a hypersensitivity reaction to antigens leaking into the retroperitoneum from atheromatous plaques in the aorta or common iliac arteries. In the remaining one third of cases, causes include ergot-derivative drugs, retroperitoneal haemorrhage or urine extravasation, and a desmoplastic response to a variety of tumours.

A case of uveitis associated with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis.

We treated a patient with nongranulomatous panuveitis associated with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis who had symptoms of abdominal pain, severe fever, leg edema, and blurred vision. A high C-reactive protein level, a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anemia, and abnormalities of the immune system were seen. Retrograde pyelography disclosed persistent ureteral obstruction. A computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a dense plaque of fibrous tissue around the kidney and hydronephrosis. Biopsy disclosed fibrosis infiltrated with lymphocytes, plasma cells, histiocyte…

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis: a case of unilateral lesion.

Here we report a case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, a unilateral case, which resulted in remission by ureterolysis with intraperitonealization. A 24-year-old female was hospitalized because of hydronephrosis. Many examinations were performed with the suspicion of malignant disease, but no apparent cause was detected. We suspected idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis and performed surgical exploration. The pathological diagnosis was retroperitoneal fibrosis. Ureterolysis with intraperitonealization of the ureter was performed. Six months later, marked improvement of the right hydroneph…

A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis with chronic pericarditis.

A 66-year-old male with chronic pericarditis accompanied by idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis was originally admitted for cardiac tamponade. A firm diagnosis was obtained only after the patient's sudden death when autopsy was performed. Chest X-rays showed cardiac enlargement and pleural effusion. Echocardiogram revealed bright echo density on the myocardium.

[Retroperitoneal fibrosis in a patient treated with bromocriptine for a prolactinoma].

We present one case of retroperitoneal fibrosis occurring in a patient presenting with a prolactinoma identified five years previously and treated with bromocriptine since then. Bromocriptine, an ergot derivative with a dopaminergic action, seems to be the cause of the fibrosis in this patient.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis due to tuberculosis, Aldomet and Daonil.

Two cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis are discussed. The first patient was a known hypertensive and diabetic and had been on Aldomet and Daonil for a long time. The second patient was a tuberculotic and is improving on antitubercular therapy. Retroperitoneal fibrosis due to the above-mentioned drugs and tuberculosis are relatively unknown.

Fibers in idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis: a case report.

A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis in a 33-yr-old female is reported. Many fiber-like crystals were noted within macrophages and the interstitial tissue of the lesion. The crystals appeared tan in hematoxylin- and eosin-stained slides and were birefringent under polarized light. The identity of the crystals was not established.

The urographic appearances in acute and chronic retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a disease which causes renal failure by obstruction of the ureters. The fibrosis may be benign or secondary to malignant disease. The clinical and radiological features of 30 cases have been reviewed. The symptoms are non-specific and diagnosis is often difficult. The most important features are back pain associated with a high ESR. Urography is diagnostic; the well known features are obvious dilatation of the pelvicalyceal system and ureter above the level of the obstruction. However, there is a spectrum of appearances corresponding to the duration of the disease a…

Abdominal aortic aneurysm in combination with retroperitoneal fibrosis.

During the 10 year period 1969-1979 145 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and 21 patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis were surgically treated in our department. Five patients had both disorders simultaneously. In four of them one or both ureters were involved in the fibrotic process and ureterolysis was performed in three and a nephrectomy in one. Three patients had the aneurysm resected simultaneously, two of them as an emergency operation because of threatening rupture. In this small group of patients with both disorders, signs and symptoms were the same as those patients with either…
