The retropsoas recess. Demonstration using computed tomography.

The retropsoas recess, a previously undescribed normal anatomic variant, is reported. In most individuals, the space posterior to the belly of the psoas muscle contains fat within the posterior pararenal space. However, a retrospective review of 250 consecutive CT examinations of the abdomen revealed 11 cases (4.4%) in which bowel loops extended at least partially posterior to the psoas muscle. Unilateral left-sided occurrence was present in seven, with four bilateral. Colon was invaginated in five, small intestine in four, and both colon and small intestine in one. There was no age or sex pre

IgG4-related Diseases - A Rare Polycystic Form of Ormond's Disease.

Currently, Ormond's disease is classified among IgG4-associated diseases. Its clinical manifestation varies and is characterized by the presence of fibrous retroperitoneal tissue that often affects the ureters or abdominal aorta and iliac arteries. We present a unique case of the polycystic form of Ormond's disease, imitating tumour in the retroperitoneal space. At the time of diagnosis, the disease was not metabolically active and did not require immunosuppressive therapy. The polycystic mass was removed surgically. There has been no exacerbation of the disease during the last 12 months.

Retroperitoneal lobular capillary hemangioma with synchronous ipsilateral renal cell carcinoma.

Lobular capillary hemangiomas (LCH) are acquired benign vascular tumors of skin and mucosal spaces of head and neck. Very few cases of LCH have been reported in the abdomen, predominantly occurring as mucosal polyps in the bowel. We present CT imaging features of solitary retroperitoneal LCH in a patient with synchronous ipsilateral renal cell carcinoma and review the available literature and imaging features in abdominal and extra-abdominal LCH. To our knowledge, there is no other case of retroperitoneal LCH available in the English literature.

Classification of acute pancreatitis based on retroperitoneal extension: application of the concept of interfascial planes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a classification system for acute pancreatitis by applying the principle that the disease spreads along the retroperitoneal interfascial planes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records and computed tomography (CT) images of 58 patients with acute pancreatitis treated between 2000 and 2005 were reviewed. The retroperitoneum was subdivided into 10 components according to the concept of interfascial planes. Severity of acute pancreatitis was graded according to retroperitoneal extension into these components. Clinical courses and outcomes were compared with

Retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma with colon infiltration: a case report and literature review.

Retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma (RP DDLS) is considered highly malignant, with a high recurrence rate and poor prognosis, and is usually asymptomatic until the advanced stages. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma with colon invasion is extremely rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. This study reported the case of a 75-year-old male patient with a retroperitoneal space-occupying lesion without any clinical symptoms. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans suggested a neoplastic lesion. After adequate preoperative preparation, the pat…

Overview of F18-FDG uptake patterns in retroperitoneal pathologies: imaging findings, pitfalls, and artifacts.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneum can be the origin of a wide variety of pathologic conditions and potential space for disease spread to other compartments of the abdomen and pelvis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are often the initial imaging modalities to evaluate the retroperitoneal pathologies, however given the intrinsic limitations, F18-FDG PET/CT provides additional valuable metabolic information which can change the patient management and clinical outcomes. We highlight the features of retroperitoneal pathologies on F18-FDG PET/CT and the commonly encountered

Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma.

The clinical history, radiological investigations, pathologic findings and treatment of four patients affected by retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma were compared with data of the literature. These tumors have a great tendency to develop local recurrences after excision, but metastases to lymph nodes and distant organs usually occur lately. CT examination of the retroperitoneal space is a sensitive tool in the diagnosis and follow-up. Complete excision of the tumor followed by radiotherapy improves significantly the prognosis. Chemotherapy is advisable only when disseminated metastases appear. No …

Severe chest allodynia as an unusual first presentation of hydatid disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a worldwide zoonosis and the liver is the most commonly affected organ. Clinical manifestations range from completely asymptomatic cysts to a potential lethal cyst rupture and anaphylaxis. CASE PRESENTATION: Severe chest allodynia was an unusual clinical presentation of hepatic cyst rupture in the retroperitoneal space, without any other specific symptoms. CE diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance. The patient underwent hepatectomy with complete resolution of the neuropathic pain. CONCLUSIONS: Retroperitoneal hydat…

Retroperitoneal Bronchogenic Cysts: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND Bronchogenic cysts are a rare congenital malformation of primitive foregut development, predominantly located in the thorax. However, they can also be found in various atypical locations, including the retroperitoneal space. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly rare. The diagnosis of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts presents considerable difficulty owing to their rarity and the absence of distinctive clinical and imaging characteristics. CASE REPORT This study reports 6 surgically confirmed cases of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts at our institution. One patient p…

Extraperitoneal paravesical spaces: CT delineation with US correlation.

The extraperitoneal space around the urinary bladder is lamellate, just like the retroperitoneal space around the kidneys. The bladder, urachus, and obliterated umbilical arteries lie within the perivesical space, surrounded by umbilicovesical fascia, analogous to the perinephric space within the renal fascia. A much larger prevesical space, analogous to the anterior pararenal space, lies anterior and lateral to the umbilicovesical fascia. Posterior to the urinary bladder, the lower uterine segment or seminal vesicles lie within the perivesical space, rather than in a separate compartment, cor…

Pictorial review: Subperitoneal spaces of the broad ligament and sigmoid mesocolon--imaging findings.

In this report, we illustrate the imaging findings of diseases in the subperitoneal space of the broad ligament and sigmoid mesocolon and discuss the pathways of subperitoneal spread of disease. The subperitoneal space of the broad ligament and sigmoid mesocolon is continuous with that of the parietal peritoneum overlying the pelvic wall. Extraperitoneal diseases originating in the pelvis can extend, via the abdominopelvic vasculature or fascial-defined compartment, superiorly into the retroperitoneal compartments of the abdomen.

Computed tomography angiography features of a retroperitoneal extra-adrenal paraganglioma in a cat.

A 7-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of a large-volume abdominal space-occupying lesion. A computed tomography angiography examination detected a round retroperitoneal mass, in contact with the large abdominal vessels, characterized by an external hyperattenuating capsule and a larger hypoattenuating center. The capsule was soft-tissue attenuating with marked heterogenous contrast enhancement. The center was hypoattenuating pre- and post-contrast administration. The mass displaced both kidneys laterally and the descendent colon ventrally. The mesenteri

Clinical experience with the treatment of retroperitoneal vascular leiomyosarcoma originating from large veins.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal vascular leiomyosarcoma (RVLMS) is an extremely rare disease in clinical practice, and it has poor prognosis. This article is to explore the diagnosis and treatment of RVLMS and present our experience. METHODS: Data of RVLMS patients were continuously collected in our hospital from August 2018 to February 2020: two males and two females with a median age of 56 (min-max = 33-61) years were included. Patients in whom paraganglioma could not be excluded were asked to take phenoxybenzamine before surgery. A multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting had been held and surger

Treatment of Retroperitoneal Cavernous Lymphangioma: A Case Report.

A 32-year-old man who complained of recurrent nauseat and vomiting was admitted to our hospital. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a cystic mass located behind the duodenum which was suggestive of lymphangioma. Laparoscopic resection of the retroperitoneal mass was successfully performed. The postoperatively pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of cavernous lymphangioma. Ultrasound and enhanced CT can be used for making a preoperative diagnosis. Once symptoms of the disease develop, complete surgical resection should be performed.

Rethinking Ormond's disease: "idiopathic" retroperitoneal fibrosis in the era of IgG4-related disease.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a periaortic sclerotic disease that encases adjacent retroperitoneal structures, particularly the ureters. A subset of idiopathic RPF cases can be associated with IgG4-related disease, but the frequency of this association is not clear. We selected 23 cases of idiopathic RPF and identified IgG4-related RPF cases based on the presence of IgG4+ plasma cells in the tissue, using an IgG4/IgG ratio cutoff of >40%. We then compared the IgG4-related RPF patients and the non-IgG4-related RPF patients in terms of both the presence of histopathologic features
