The surveillance of territories surrounding the plague focus of Kurdistan province in Iran, by inspection of wild rodent burrows, permit to reveal the existence of an epizootic in a new focus located in the Eastern Azarbaidjan province, where plague was never reported. 14 strains of Y. pestis were isolated from Meriones vinogradovi, M. persicus Mesocricetus brandti and from the fleas: Xenopsylla conformis and Nosopsylla iranus iranus. The eventual relationship between these two areas separated by about 200 km was investigated: neither attempts to isolate Y. pestis nor serological surveys permi

Described are the characteristics of the polycystic larval cestodes found in an endemic area of echinococcosis in the Easter Plains of Colombia and the tissue reaction evoked in infected rodents. Of 848 free-ranging animals examined, polycystic hydatids were found in 44/93 Cuniculus paca and 1/369 Proechimys sp. None of 20 Dasyprocta fuliginosa examined was infected, but hunters provided a heart with hydatid cysts and information about two additional animals with infected livers. Recognition of an endemic area of polycystic echinococcosis provides a means to investigate the life cycle of the p

Investigations have been carried out on the multimammate rat (Mastomys natalensis), orally infected with 1000 third stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum per animal, to evaluate the larvicidal efficacy of anthelmintics in this paratenic host. The oral or subcutaneous administration of 19 anthelmintics and filaricides revealed good activity for levamisole, cambendazole, and mebendazole against 15-day-old Ancylostoma larvae which were located in the muscular tissue. Similarly, good results were obtained with levamisole and cambendazole against the migrating third stage larvae, by treatment two to

The morphology of the thyroid gland of the woodchuck, Marmota monax, was studied during the four seasons of the year. In the spring the thyroid is extremely heterogenous in appearance. Some follicular cells appear quite active. They contain a well defined Golgi apparatus, abundant large colloid droplets and pseudopodia but few, if any, apical vesicles. Other less active cells have poorly defined rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and lack a well developed Golgi apparatus. They do not contain apical vesicles or colloid droplets. Summer thyroids have uniformly small follicles which are lined b

Collections from rodents conducted over a period of 11 years in natural nidi of tularemia in the Leningrad region include the ticks of Ixodes persulcatus, I. ricinus, I. trianguliceps and I. apronophorus. The redbacked vole is the main host of I. trianguliceps larvae. The larvae of this species have two peaks of abundance, in June and September. Larvae and other developmental phases of I. apronophorus were most abundant on water vole in June. Larvae of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus feed on small mammals in general but the latter are unessential in the feeding of nymphs.

Order Rodentia is the most speciose among mammals and the members of this order are known to host more than 60 zoonotic diseases and rodents are a potential health threat to humans. This study was designed to report the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic evaluation of various blood borne bacterial pathogens (Anaplasma ovis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma marginale and Bartonella spp.) in the blood samples of four wild rodent species [Meriones rex (N = 27), Acomys dimidiatus (N = 18), Myomys yemeni (N = 6) and Rattus rattus (N = 3)] that were trapped during August till October 2020 fro…

Biodiversity can influence disease risk. One example of a diversity-disease relationship is the dilution effect, which suggests higher host … cases. We found that species assemblages with more related species (i.e., host species in the order Rodentia) were associated with more Lyme disease cases in humans. Host species richness correlated negatively with the number of Lyme disease cases at the state level (i.e., a dilution effect), a pattern that might be explained by the higher number of reserv …

Oecomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae, Oryzomyini) is a taxonomically complex and cytogenetically diverse genus with a controversial intraspecific phylogenetic relationship. Karyotypic analyses, using whole chromosome probes from Hylaeamys megacephalus (HME, Sigmodontinae, Oryzomyini) in some taxonomic lineages of this genus have detected the rearrangements that shaped their karyotypes, in addition to revealing relevant insights into the taxonomic status of these taxa. Thus, to investigate the chromosomal evolution of the genus, we characterized the karyotype of Oecomys rutilus (ORU) with HME probe…

INTRODUCTION: Identification of thyroid hormone system-disrupting chemicals (THSDC) requires a solid understanding of the mechanisms by which exposure leads to adverse outcomes in the thyroid hormone system (THS).
METHODS: In this systematic review, we present the results from our extensive evidence mapping of thyroid hormone (TH) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) patterns in serum or plasma, after exposure to various THSDCs in adult rodents. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Web of Sciences and Scopus for relevant studies. Eligible studies were selected acco

The coypu (Myocastor coypus bonariensis) is a semi-aquatic hystricomorph rodent native to South America, widely distributed across wetlands from southern Brazil to Tierra del Fuego. The general features of the ovary of the coypu older than 6 months are similar to those described for other hystricomorphs. The objective of this research was to expand the qualitative and quantitative characterization of the follicular typology of coypu at sexual maturity. We worked with 36 ovaries from females in different stages of the oestrous cycle. The follicles were analysed based on qualitative and quantita

Cerebral ischemia/hypoxia constitutes a central pathological process in ischemic stroke and a range of neurological disorders, yet effective and safe neuroprotective strategies remain scarce in clinical practice. Hibernating rodents repeatedly undergo extreme physiological fluctuations, including marked reductions in cerebral blood flow and subsequent reperfusion, during torpor-arousal cycles, yet they do not exhibit overt neurological deficits upon emergence from hibernation. This unique phenotype renders them a valuable natural model for investigating endogenous tolerance to cerebral ischemi

Animal personality influences organismal interactions and individual habitat use. Rodents are zoonoses reservoirs and often exposed to several pathogens simultaneously, potentially resulting in interdependence of infections and susceptibility to infection. Still, entire pathogen communities are rarely investigated, even though, given rodents ubiquity in human settlements, understanding the link between animal personality and pathogenesis is an important public health issue. We investigated the association of animal personality with pathogen communities in wild rodents, analysing ectoparasite o
