Etiologic theories of idiopathic scoliosis: enantiomorph disorder concept of bilateral symmetry, physeally-created growth conflicts and possible prevention.

The detection of anomalous extra-spinal left-right skeletal length asymmetries in the upper limbs, periapical ribs, ilia and lower limbs of subjects with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) raises questions about skeletal bilateral symmetry of vertebrates in health and disorder, its origin and control. The vertebrate body plan externally has mirror-image bilateral symmetries that are highly conserved culminating in the adult form. The normal human body can be viewed as containing paired skeletal structures in the axial and appendicular skeleton as 1) separate left and right paired forms (eg

Reinforcement schedules and extrapolations to humans from animals in behavioral pharmacology.

Behavior controlled by various schedules of reinforcement is useful for characterizing drugs as well as for analyzing the mechanisms of action of their effects on behavior. Conditioned avoidance techniques have been useful for studying neuroleptics and for predicting their clinical antipsychotic acitivity; the possible involvement of dopaminergic mechanisms in the effect of neurolpetics on avoidance behavior is discussed. Tricyclic antidepressant agents have been studied in assays involving interactions with other agents, such as cocaine, amphetamine and tetrabenazine. One type of operant beha

Multiple mating, sperm storage, and mating preference in Aplysia californica.

Aplysia californica, a simultaneous hermaphrodite, has the ability to store and digest allosperm and frequently mates with multiple partners. Using controlled matings and behavioral observations, we characterized the mating behavior of multiply-mated A. californica. Regardless of their initial mating role, all animals mated a second time. Individuals acting as the initial sperm donor showed no preference for second mating role when paired with a "virgin" partner. However, individuals acting as the initial sperm recipient showed a highly significant preference for acting as the sperm donor in s

Nursing Students' Perception of Missed Perioperative Nursing Care: Hermeneutic Phenomenology.

PURPOSE: Missed nursing care is a condition that is likely to be encountered frequently in the surgical care process and is generally related to the educational and emotional needs of the patients. Perception of and witnessing missed care can affect nursing images, expectations, and experiences by causing nursing students to experience professional disappointment. The purpose of the study was to explore nursing students' perception of perioperative missed nursing care (PMNC) according to "role theory" and Benner's "novice to expert" theories. DESIGN: The study used a qualitative design based

Decisional conflict in American parents regarding newborn circumcision.

BACKGROUND: Decisional conflict surrounding the topic of circumcision in the newborn male is assumed in some parents but has not been quantified or qualified. It is known that parents often base their decision on cultural and social factors and that physician discussions do affect ultimate decision-making. Information on parents' decision-making surrounding newborn circumcision and ways to mitigate conflict or uncertainty around the decision-making process is needed to better counsel them appropriately. OBJECTIVES: To identify the presence or absence of decisional conflict in parents-to-be de

Is the Cat-Owner Relationship Related to Cat-Wildlife Conflicts?

Free-ranging pet cats have been identified as significant predators of wildlife. Managing this conflict is challenging, because control of movement ultimately lies with the owner. Previous research has focused on the influence of environmental, intrinsic, husbandry-, and personality-related factors on cats' behavior when stepping out the door. However, an overlooked driver is the strength of the cat-owner relationship. In this explorative study, we used animal-borne video cameras to document the outdoor behavior of 12 cats and in parallel assessed the relationship with their owners through the

Assessment of progress in education for children and youth with disabilities in Afghanistan: A multilevel analysis of repeated cross-sectional surveys.

Recent study shows that 617 million children and adolescents-or six out of 10 globally- are not acquiring minimum levels in literacy and mathematics, indicating the magnitude of the learning acquisition problem. For children with disabilities in context of conflict, the situation is arguably even worse: the literature shows that they face difficulties to access the education system due to multiple barriers, and when they do access, they are not learning. Our paper examines if an active education policy promoting inclusion since 2005 in Afghanistan, a protracted crisis context, has been effecti

Achieving the end game: employing "vaccine diplomacy" to eradicate polio in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: On April 28, 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared polio a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" (PHIC) under the authority of the International Health Regulations. Although polio has been eradicated from nearly every nation on earth, Pakistan is one of three countries where wild polio and vaccine-derived polio strains remain, thwarting global eradication efforts. AIMS: Polio eradication progress is complicated by security and conflict issues at the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition to security issues, other critical challenges, su

Identity and relatedness as mediators between child emotional abuse and adult couple adjustment in women.

The empirical literature indicates that childhood emotional abuse (CEA) produces long lasting impairments in interpersonal relatedness and identity, often referred to as self-capacities. CEA has also been shown to negatively impact couple functioning. This study examined the role of identity and interpersonal conflicts in mediating the relationship between CEA and women's report of couple adjustment among 184 French Canadian women from the general population. Path analysis revealed that CEA was related to poorer couple adjustment through its impact on dysfunctional self-capacities and the expe

[Causes and treatment of seasickness].

Seasickness is usually induced by conflicting sensory cues. However, very little is known about the neural pathways and processes which play a role in the development of nausea. Since the symptoms, for example, pallor, sweating and vomiting are all of parasympathetic origin, the common antiemetic drugs are anticholinergically efficient. More recently, additional drugs and modified forms of application have been introduced to reduce the soporific side effects. It is pointed out that onboard behaviour and even choice of vessel can be of more importance than use of antivertiginous drugs. Besides

Lived experiences of nurse academics, motivations and threats: Qualitative evidence synthesis review.

INTRODUCTION: Preparatory nursing education has undergone progressive changes including a shift to studying within universities, requiring nurse educators to evolve and develop. This transition from trainer to academic educator has not been without problems, especially balancing the dual demands of being both a nurse and an academic. With a global shortage of nursing academics, understanding the challenges they face within their everyday work is crucial to ensure a stable international workforce of the future. AIM: This qualitative evidence synthesis examines published international literatur

Cross-modal conflict control deficits in male patients with substance use disorder are primarily associated with the response level.

RATIONALE: Cross-modal conflict control (CMCC) refers to the ability to prioritize information from one sensory modality while suppressing interference from another when presented with incongruent stimuli. Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) often exhibit CMCC deficits, but it has not been clarified whether this deficit occurs at the perception or response level. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether CMCC deficits in patients with SUD originate at perception or response levels and examined the modulatory role of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using transcranial d

Management and Prevention of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in War Casualties.

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical issue for both civilians and the military. With each successive conflict, pathogens become more resistant, making the management of infections in casualties increasingly challenging. To better understand the scope and characteristics of conflict-related AMR, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed database in April 2025, using defined search terms related to war casualties and antimicrobial resistance. We screened and included 117 relevant publications, comprising original research articles, reviews, case

Are you ready? A cross-sectional survey of education, training and learning activities for peacetime crisis and armed conflict preparedness in Swedish emergency departments.

The evolving security landscape in Europe underscores the crucial importance of disaster preparedness. Emergency Departments’ (EDs) personnel – comprising nurses, nurse assistants and physicians – play a vital role in managing crises during both peacetime and armed conflicts. However, readiness and educational preparation of Emergency Department (ED) personnel are inconsistent; consequently, Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) has introduced national recommendations concerning education and training for both peacetime crises and armed conflicts. This study aimed to investigate

Medical students' healthcare seeking-behavior: A cross-sectional study from Sudan.

Healthcare-seeking behavior plays a crucial role in early diagnosis and effective treatment. In conflict-affected low-income communities like Sudan, factors affecting healthcare-seeking behavior and the rationale for engaging in self-medication practices can vary tremendously in comparison to stable communities. Responsibilities placed upon medical students who faced displacement are substantial within their host communities. This study aims to explore the role of armed conflict and the displacement crisis in reshaping the factors affecting the healthcare-seeking behavior and self-medication p

Stumblers and Tumblers: Two Pathways to "Unintentional" Fall-Related Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion, is the commonest neurological condition in high-income countries and is the second commonest condition next to migraines. Although most of these injuries are unintentional, substance abuse and age-related physiological factors have been implicated as causal factors of fall-related TBIs. Our study used qualitative methods and a life course perspective to examine whether life events and psychosocial antecedents, such as early adverse childhood experiences, play a role in the occurrence of non-intentional fall-related TBI. In-depth interviews we

RNA-related functions of BRCA2 in transcription, replication, and genome stability.

BRCA2 is a central tumor suppressor protein best known for its roles in homologous recombination and replication fork stability. Increasing evidence, however, positions BRCA2 at the interface of transcription and replication, where it preserves genome stability under transcription-associated stress. BRCA2 regulates R-loop homeostasis, transcription-replication conflict resolution, and RNA polymerase II dynamics. Its loss leads to R-loop accumulation, transcriptional pausing, and elevated transcription-replication head-on collisions, particularly in highly transcribed regions. BRCA2 also promot
