The inter-relationships of the neural basis of rumination and inhibitory control: neuroimaging-based meta-analyses.

Rumination, as a clinical manifestation and pathogenic factor of depression, has long been the focus of psychological research regarding its causes and ameliorating approaches. Behavioral studies have shown that rumination is related to inhibitory control deficits, which provides ideas for reducing it. However, the neural relationship between them has not been clearly discussed. In this study, we first used multi-level kernel density analysis to conduct two meta-analyses of published functional magnetic resonance imaging studies: one was rumination comprising 17 studies with 180 foci, and the

The effect of trauma proximity and ruminative response styles on posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth following a university shooting.

OBJECTIVE: Shootings in academic settings are associated with the development of both posttraumatic growth (PTG) and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms (Bardeen, Kumpula, & Orcutt, 2013). Traumatic events can challenge an individual's cognitive framework and contribute to the development of PTS and PTG. Intrusive rumination is thought to increase vulnerability to PTS symptoms, whereas deliberate rumination is likely to be associated with PTG. Literature that serves to distinguish the contextual and intraindividual predictors differentially leading to the development of PTS and PTG symptoms is

Development of sex differences in depressive and co-occurring anxious symptoms during adolescence: descriptive trajectories and potential explanations in a multiwave prospective study.

This study investigated psychosocial mechanisms that may account for sex differences in internalizing symptoms of depression and anxiety during adolescence using data from a prospective, multiwave study with a sample of early and middle adolescents (N = 350, 6th to 10th graders; 57% female). Girls showed higher initial levels of only depressive symptoms, not anxious arousal, and increasing trajectories of depressive and anxious arousal symptoms over time compared with boys after controlling for age. Initial levels of depressive symptoms were mediated by a Rumination x Stressors interaction as

A Comparison of Affective-Cognitive States in Daily Life Between Emerging Adults With and Without Past-Year Nonsuicidal Self-Injury.

Although the literature suggests trait-like differences in affective and cognitive vulnerabilities between individuals with and without a history of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), little is known about how these dispositional differences are experienced in the natural environment. The present study compares the intensity, inertia, interaction, and variability of affective (negative and positive affect) and cognitive states (rumination, self-criticism) in the everyday lives of individuals who do and do not engage in NSSI. Using experience sampling methodology (ESM), 60 emerging adults (ages =

Cracking the Repetitive Negative Thinking Code: Keys to Understanding Anxiety and Depression.

Debate exists on whether cognitive components of anxiety and depression, specifically worry, postevent processing (PEP), and rumination, are best understood as independent constructs (i.e., symptom-specific) or as one transdiagnostic construct (i.e., repetitive negative thinking [RNT]) and whether the process or content of RNT is most relevant to symptom severity. We investigate whether RNT, measured transdiagnostically, explains additional variance in symptom severity than worry, rumination, and PEP. We explore whether the content of RNT thoughts or the process of engaging in RNT is associate

The mediating role of rumination between boredom proneness and life satisfaction in married couples: a dyadic study.

Married couples invariably impact one another during their shared time. Prolonged interactions may influence their perceptions of one another. This study sought to investigate the mediating effect of rumination on the relationship between boredom proneness and life satisfaction among married couples. A total of 529 married couples (n = 1058) participated in the study, which employed the Brief Boredom Proneness Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Rumination Scale on Interpersonal Errors. Data were gathered via online questionnaires and analyzed employing the Actor-Dependency Mediat

Are mindful people less aggressive? The role of emotion regulation in the relations between mindfulness and aggression.

Inducing mindfulness has shown a promising effect on reducing aggression in both clinical and nonclinical populations, possibly because mindfulness can improve emotion regulation. The present study examined the association between mindfulness and aggression through potential mediating effects of several emotion regulation strategies. University and community samples of U.S. adults completed questionnaires on mindfulness, emotion regulation strategies, and trait aggression. Results indicate that mindfulness was associated with rumination and expressive suppression, which mediated the mindfulnes

Rumination: relationships with physical health.

Rumination is a form of perserverative cognition that focuses on negative content, generally past and present, and results in emotional distress. Initial studies of rumination emerged in the psychological literature, particularly with regard to studies examining specific facets of rumination (e.g., positive vs. negative rumination, brooding vs. self-reflection, relationships with catastrophic thinking, role of impaired disengagement, state vs. trait features) as well as the presence of rumination in various psychiatric syndromes (e.g., depression, alcohol misuse, generalized anxiety disorder,

Cognitive coping strategies and symptoms of depression and anxiety: a comparison between adolescents and adults.

The present study focused on comparability of adolescents and adults in the reporting of cognitive coping strategies and their relationship to symptoms of depression and anxiety. Two samples were included: 487 adolescents attending a secondary school and 630 adults from a general practitioners practice. Data were obtained on symptoms of depression and anxiety and the use of nine cognitive coping strategies: acceptance, catastrophizing, other-blame, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, refocus on planning, positive refocusing, rumination and self-blame. The results showed that all co

Electrocortical Reactivity to Emotional Faces in Youth of Depressed Mothers: The Moderating Role of Emotion Regulation Styles.

Children of depressed mothers are at significantly high risk (HR) for developing major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to their low risk (LR) counterparts. Evidence shows that HR youth exhibit a reduced late positive potential (LPP), an electroencephalogram (EEG) marker of emotional reactivity, in response to social-emotional stimuli. However, it remains unknown how emotion regulation (ER) styles may impact LPP responses in HR and LR offspring. The current study sought to examine the interplay of ER strategies (i.e., rumination, cognitive reappraisal, and suppression) and maternal history o…

Sleep Related Cognitions in Individuals with Symptoms of Insomnia and Depression.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Depression has been identified as the most common condition comorbid to insomnia, with findings pointing to the possibility that these disorders may be causally related to each other or may share common mechanisms. Some have suggested that comorbid insomnia and depression may have a different clinical course than either condition alone, and may thus require specific treatment procedures. In this report we examined the clinical characteristics of individuals referred to an academic sleep center who report comorbid symptoms of insomnia and depression and those with symptoms of

Neural signal variability relates to maladaptive rumination in depression.

Rumination is a common feature of depression and predicts the onset and maintenance of depressive episodes. Maladaptive and adaptive subtypes of rumination contribute to distinct outcomes, with brooding worsening negative mood and reflection related to fewer depression symptoms in healthy populations. Neuroimaging studies have implicated several cortical midline and lateral prefrontal brain regions in rumination. Recent research indicates that blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal variability may be a novel predictor of cognitive flexibility. However, no prior studies have investigated wh

A Daily Diary Study of Rumination and Health Behaviors: Modeling Moderators and Mediators.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination, thinking about a negative mood repetitively, is a common cognitive process that may affect health behavior engagement or avoidance. Little research has examined relations between rumination and health behaviors. PURPOSE: We aimed to test links between rumination and health behaviors as well as possible moderators and mediators of those links. METHODS: We used an 11-day online daily diary design. Health behavior outcomes included fruit intake, vegetable intake, exercise, alcohol intake, sexual risk taking behavior, and cigarette smoking. RESULTS: Rumination was related

Rumination and executive function in depression: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Major depression is associated with cognitive deficits, particularly those requiring central executive functioning. Depressed patients also tend to focus on and think about their symptoms and problems ("ruminate") more than non-depressed controls. Although an association has been found between rumination and impaired performance on a central executive processing task, the causal relation between impaired executive functioning and rumination has not been determined. This study sought to directly manipulate rumination and assess the impact on executive functioning in depression as me

Ruminative self-focus in daily life: associations with daily activities and depressive symptoms.

The present study examined the situations and conditions in which ruminative self-focus is less likely to occur in daily life. Previous researchers have described a mood-brightening effect of depression, where depressed individuals exhibit greater positive emotional reactivity to positive daily events than do nondepressed individuals. To better understand this paradoxical effect, we investigated the moderating role of depression in the relationship between daily activities and ruminative thinking. Forty-one Japanese undergraduates (9 women and 32 men) recorded their thought contents and the ty

Emotional Dysregulation and Emotional Eating in Hospitalized Adults with Obesity: The Mediating Role of Worry and Rumination.

Background: Emotional dysregulation has been strongly linked to maladaptive eating behaviors in obesity. Worry and rumination are frequently implicated in emotional dysregulation and may serve as pathways linking emotional regulation difficulties to emotional eating. The current study examines the mediating role of worry and rumination in the relationship between emotional dysregulation and emotional eating among individuals with obesity. Methods: Ninety hospitalized Italian adults were involved in the study with 53 obese males, 37 obese females, mean age ± SD: 50.1 + 10.9 years; mean body mas

From thoughts to symptoms: The temporal and dimensional dynamics of rumination in depression.

Rumination, characterized by persistent, repetitive focus on negative thoughts or emotions, has long been implicated as a central transdiagnostic process in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Although many studies have examined the rumination-depression temporal relationship, findings vary depending on design, measurement, and analytic approach. The present study applies a multiscale, data-driven framework to describe how rumination and depressive symptoms unfold across different temporal modes. Using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Granger causality in two longitudinal ecological momenta

Brooding, reflection, and anger rumination in late life suicidal behavior.

BACKGROUND: Current literature on age-specific risk factors for suicide in older adulthood is lacking. One risk factor for younger-life suicide, rumination, has not been extensively studied in older adults, but from prior research, may be more relevant to late-life vs. early life suicide. The current study investigated how multiple subtypes of rumination (i.e., brooding, reflection, and anger rumination) relate to suicidal ideation and recent suicidal behavior in late life. METHODS: 378 participants aged 50-90 (mean age 63.4, SD 7.5) were recruited into a case-control study examining suicide

Sleep-specific repetitive negative thinking processes and prenatal insomnia symptoms: A naturalistic follow-up study from mid- to late-pregnancy.

Insomnia symptoms are highly prevalent during pregnancy; therefore, identifying modifiable risk markers is important for risk prediction and early intervention. This study aimed to examine the role of sleep-specific rumination and sleep-specific worry in prenatal insomnia symptoms. A total of 859 married pregnant women without history of psychiatric illnesses (mean [standard deviation] age, 30.15 [3.86] years; 593 [69.0%] with a bachelor's degree or above) were enrolled from the obstetrical outpatient departments of two tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Shandong, China, who completed assessm
