Modeling potential of halophytes in the production of biofuel and edible oil using linear regression and an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system.

Halophyte plants are capable of tolerating high salinity due to their unique morphological characteristics, vegetative forms, physiological attributes, and specific salt tolerance mechanisms. These plants offer significant economic benefits, prompting research into their potential use in biofuel and edible oil production. This study focused on three plant species: Haloxylon persicum, Tamarix ramossisima, and Halocnemum strobilaceum. Samples were collected at distances of 1000, 1500, 2000, and 5000 m from the Miduk mining site in Shahrbabek, with four replications of 20 individual plants each. …

A D, D-carboxypeptidase is required for Vibrio cholerae halotolerance.

The biological roles of low molecular weight penicillin-binding proteins (LMW PBP) have been difficult to discern in Gram-negative organisms. In Escherichia coli, mutants lacking these proteins often have no phenotype, and cells lacking all seven LMW PBPs remain viable. In contrast, we report here that Vibrio cholerae lacking DacA-1, a PBP5 homologue, displays slow growth, aberrant morphology and altered peptidoglycan (PG) homeostasis in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium, as well as a profound plating defect. DacA-1 alone among V. cholerae's LMW PBPs is critical for bacterial growth; mutants lacking t

Enhancing anammox resistance to salinity stress through waste iron scraps addition: Performance and microbial community dynamics.

This study investigated the potential of waste iron scraps (WIS) to improve salinity resistance in anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) sy … ining nitrogen removal under hypersaline conditions. Mechanistically, WIS likely enhanced microbial salt tolerance through continuous iron release, which upregulated osmoregulation pathways, iron transport systems, and energy metabolism. These findings demonstrated WIS as a cost-effective strategy for enhancing anammox processes in saline wastewater treatment.

Co-metabolism of Na+/K+ ion regulated physiological enhancement on selenium-accumulation in Saccharomyces yeasts.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is an important nutritional supplement that mainly exists naturally in soil as inorganic selenium. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells are excellent medium for converting inorganic selenium in nature into organic selenium. RESULTS: Under the co-stimulation of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and potassium selenite (K2SeO3), the activity of selenophosphate synthetase (SPS) was improved up to about five folds more than conventional Na2SeO3 group with the total selenite salts content of 30 mg/L. Transcriptome analysis first revealed that due to the sharing pathway between sodium ion (Na

Synthesis of Azoxy Compounds: from Copper Compounds to Mesoporous Silica-Encaged Ultrasmall Copper Catalysts.

Azoxy compounds have aroused extensive attention due to their unique biological activities, but the chemical synthesis of these compounds often suffers from limitations due to their requirement for stoichiometric oxidants, high costs, and restricted substrate range. Herein, a series of azoxy compounds were constructed via facile coupling reactions by using cost-effective N-methoxyformamide and nitroso compounds over Cu-based catalysts, affording high product yields with excellent tolerance of functional groups. Significantly, the mesoporous silica nanosphere-encapsulated ultrasmall Cu (Cu@MSN)

Meerwein Arylation of Aryl(alkyl)idenemalononitriles and Diazonium Salts for the Synthesis of 2-(Aryl(alkyl)/arylmethylene)malononitrile Derivatives.

A metal-free Meerwein arylation reaction from aryl(alkyl)idenemalononitriles and diazonium salts for the synthesis of 2-(aryl(alkyl)/arylmethylene)malononitrile derivatives under mild conditions was well developed. Different from the general addition reactions between alkenes and diazonium salts, this study performed the traditional coupling reaction for the formation of C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond arylation products. The radical reaction mechanism was well verified in the control experiments. The other advantages of the approach are broad-scope substrates and good group tolerance. Moreover, the obtain

Palladium-Catalyzed Directed Aldehyde C-H Arylation of Quinoline-8-carbaldehydes: Exploring the Reactivity Differences between Aryl (Pseudo) Halides.

We have developed a method for Pd-catalyzed direct C-H arylation of quinoline-8-carbaldehydes with either aryl iodides or aryl diazonium salts for the synthesis of aryl quinolinyl ketones. Aryl iodide substituted with an electron-donating group favors the reaction, whereas aryl diazonium salt substituted with an electron-withdrawing group showed excellent reactivity. A range of aryl quinolinyl ketones were synthesized in good-to-excellent yields, with very good functional group tolerance. Our methodology was successfully applied to synthesize highly potent tubulin polymerization inhibitors and

Palladium-catalyzed Cs2CO3-promoted arylation of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds by (diacetoxyiodo)arenes: shifting the reactivity of (diacetoxyiodo)arenes from acetoxylation to arylation.

PdCl2(CH3CN)2-catalyzed arylation of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds using (diacetoxyiodo)arenes as arylation reagents is reported. The reactivity of (diacetoxyiodo)arenes as arylation reagents is enabled in the presence of Cs2CO3 under the reaction conditions. This arylation method is highly efficient and occurs without the use of silver salt. The reaction tolerates a broad substrate scope that was not demonstrated by other silver salt-free C(sp(3))-H bond arylation conditions. The synthetic utility of the method is further illustrated in the synthesis of the psychotropic drug phenibut. A detail

The Co-Expression of GmCML27 and GmU2AFb Enhances Tolerance to Alkaline Stress in Lupinus angustifolius.

Soil salinization severely constrains plant growth and agricultural productivity. Identifying key genes conferring alkali tolerance and elucidating their regulatory mechanisms is of great significance for breeding salt-alkali-tolerant leguminous crops. In this study, we investigated the soybean genes GmCML27 and its potential interacting partner GmU2AFb, and explored their functions in response to alkali stress in narrow-leaf lupine (Lupinus angustifolius) through bioinformatics analyses. Protein interaction prediction and experimental validation further supported a potential association betwe

Highly Effective Salt-Activated Alcohol-Based Disinfectants with Enhanced Antimicrobial Activity.

Surfaces contaminated with pathogens raise concerns about the increased risk of disease transmission and infection. To clean biocontaminated surfaces, alcohol-based disinfectants have been predominantly used for disinfecting high-touch areas in diverse settings. However, due to its limited antimicrobial activities and concern over the emergence of alcohol-tolerant strains, much effort has been made to develop highly efficient disinfectant formulations. In this study, we hypothesize that the addition of a physical pathogen inactivation mechanism by salt recrystallization (besides the existing c

Antagonistic regulation by mango MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b regulates flowering time, drought and salt stress in Arabidopsis.

SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors, which are unique to plants, contain a highly conserved SBP domain that regulates gene expression by binding to downstream targets. They play critical roles in various biological processes, especially in the regulation of flowering in plants. In this study, two SPL-like genes (MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b) were identified from mango genomic and transcriptomic data, and their sequence, expression and function were further analyzed. Sequence analysis revealed that MiSPL9a and MiSPL9b have open reading frames of 1173 bp and 1158 bp, respec

Impact of Pickling Pretreatment on the Meat Quality of Frozen-Thawed Freshwater Drum (Aplodinotus grunniens).

The freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens) is a promising aquaculture species due to its strong environmental adaptability, tolerance to low temperatures, rapid growth rate, high nutritional value, high-quality texture (garlic-clove-shaped flesh), and absence of intermuscular bones. Nevertheless, processing technologies related to freshwater drum remain largely unexplored. Salting pretreatment serves as a viable strategy for enhancing the quality attributes of frozen fish products. This study investigated the effects of different sodium chloride (NaCl) pickling concentrations (0.25, 1, and 3

The role of dietary sodium in autoimmune diseases: The salty truth.

Autoimmune diseases are a group of heterogeneous condition that occur secondary to the intrinsic loss of tolerance to self- antigens. In genetically susceptible individuals, the complex interplay of environmental factors and epigenetic deregulations have been proposed to drive disease etiopathogenesis. Various environmental variables have been identified including viral infections, exposure to pollutants, stress and dietary factors. Sodium, a major constituent of salt is essential for mammalian physiology. However, high salt intake may play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases. Sev

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Analysis of Kinase Proteins in Land Plants and Their Expression in Gossypium hirsutum Under Salt Stress.

The kinase proteins are a superfamily in plants and are involved in diverse biological and molecular functions for better adaptation of land plants. Protein kinase diversification is hypothesized to enhance plant adaptation to abiotic stress, particularly salinity. This study tests whether evolutionary expansions of stress-responsive kinase subfamilies correlate with functional variation in salt tolerance. The study identified a total of 49,611 genes in 32 land plants across mosses, bryophytes, lycophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. All identified genes were classified into 26 major classes…

The genetics of metal tolerance in vascular plants.

In many parts of the world soils are detrimental to plant growth owing to elevated levels of metal ions, caused either by natural processes or by the result of man's activities. Many plants have evolved ecotypes or varieties that are able to grow more-or-less normally on these soils. This paper reviews our knowledge of the genetics of this phenomenon. The nature of tolerance and the problems of its measurement are discussed. Tolerance is frequently measured by an index produced by comparing growth in a contaminated environment with growth in a control environment. It is argued that this measur

Inhibitory effects of copper on bacteria related to the free ion concentration.

Cu(2+) ion determinations were carried out in complex and in inorganic salts-glycerol media, to which increasing amounts of Cu(II) had been added, with the ion-specific Cu(II)-Selectrode. Likewise, complexing capacity of bacterial suspensions was estimated by titration with CuSO4.Copper-sensitive bacteria, e.g.,Klebsiella aerogenes, were inhibited in their growth and survival in the range of 10(-8)-10(-6) M Cu(2+) ion concentrations. In copper-buffered complex media, high copper loads could be tolerated, as growth proceeded with most of the copper bound to medium components. In low-complexing
