Vulvar myeloid sarcoma as the presenting symptom of acute myeloid leukemia: a case report and literature review of Chinese patients, 1999-2018.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS), which represents a rare malignancy that comprises of myeloid blasts occurring at extra-medullary sites, closely correlates with the onset and relapse of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other hemopoietic neoplasm. Female genital system is an uncommon location of MS, with the vulvar MS being even rarer that only eight cases have been reported in English-written literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman presented with chronic ulceration on her vulva for one and a half month. Microscopic examination of incisional biopsy revealed dermal infiltration of m

Spontaneous remission in patients with acute myeloid leukemia with t(8;21) or cutaneous myeloid sarcoma: two case reports and a review of the literature.

Spontaneous remission (SR) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is rare. We herein present two such cases. The first case was of AML-M2 accompanied by a bone marrow cytogenetic analysis revealing 46, XY, t(8;21)(q22,q22). The second case was of isolated cutaneous myeloid sarcoma (MS) that progressed to AML within seven months. Both of the patients had symptoms of infection and anemia and were therefore treated with antibiotics and transfusions. The SR lasted for two months and one month, respectively. Currently, the mechanisms underlying SR remain ambiguous. Possible underlying mechan

Surgical Colonic Myeloid Sarcoma Following Bone Marrow Transplantation in a Patient With Acute Myeloid Leukemia With Myelodysplasia-Related Changes: A Case Report.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS), a rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia, can develop in various anatomical sites, including the skin, lymph nodes, and bones. Gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon, and colonic MS is particularly rare. We describe the case of a 60-year-old man with a history of acute myeloid leukemia with myelodysplasia-related changes who underwent bone marrow transplantation. He presented with diarrhea, and abdominal computed tomography revealed bowel obstruction caused by a large ascending colon mass with associated lymphadenopathy. Emergency surgery was perfor

A case report of acute promyelocytic leukemia with myeloid sarcoma of the lumbar spine and literature review.

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) presenting solely as myeloid sarcoma (MS) is extremely rare. This report describes a 53-year-old male who presented with low back pain and a movement disorder in his lower limbs. MRI and PET/CT scans of the lumbar spine revealed an intraspinal mass. Pathological analysis of the surgically resected mass identified it as myeloid in origin. Routine blood tests were unremarkable, and bone marrow smears and immunophenotyping showed no evidence of abnormal myeloblasts or promyelocytes. However, bone marrow aspirates testing for acute leukemia fusion genes by qPCR r

Myeloid sarcoma with maxillary gingival swelling as the initial symptom: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS), also referred to as granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma, is a rare type of extramedullary malignant tumor. MS comprises primitive granulocytic precursor cells that play a key role in the early stages of white blood cell development. Notably, the occurrence of this tumor in the gingiva is rare. CASE SUMMARY: The present study reported the case of MS with gingival swelling in the maxillary region, with aleukemic presentation in a 32-year-old male patient. Following two courses of chemotherapy, computed tomography of the region demonstrated complete clearance of th

Case report: Orbital myeloid sarcoma: a report of two rare cases and review of the literature.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) occurs when primitive or naive myeloid cells form outside the bone marrow. It occurs mainly in soft/connective tissue and skin; orbital involvement is rare. We report the cases of two female adults, analyze the clinicopathologic characteristics, and review the literature. The average age of both patients was 28 years and they presented unilateral proptosis combined with varying degrees of impaired visual acuity and restricted ocular motility in the affected eye. Despite this, they maintained good overall health and no notable family history. However, the patients had no sy

Myeloid Sarcoma: Features in Cytological Preparations and the Utility of Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) in Triage.

INTRODUCTION: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor consisting of blasts of granulocytic, monocytic, erythroid, or megakaryocytic lineage that disrupts the architecture of the involved tissue. MS shows vast clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic heterogeneity posing a diagnostic dilemma, especially in small biopsy specimens such as fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and core biopsy. The objective of this study is to highlight the morphologic features of MS in cytological preparations and investigate the efficacy of pathologist-performed rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) in

HMGB1 Translocation is Associated with Tumor-Associated Myeloid Cells and Involved in the Progression of Fibroblastic Sarcoma.

The morphological variability and genetic complexity of fibroblastic sarcoma makes its diagnosis and treatment a challenge. High-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), which functions as a DNA chaperone and a prototypical damage-associated molecular pattern, plays a paradoxical role in cancer. However, the expression pattern and role of HMGB1 in fibroblastic sarcomas is ill defined. By immunostaining of 95 tissue microarray cores of fibroblastic sarcomas, HMGB1 was found to be expressed in most tumor tissues. Nuclear HMGB1 translocation to cytoplasm was observed both in tumor cells and vascular

Expression of programmed death ligand 1 is associated with poor prognosis in myeloid sarcoma patients.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare condition and is an extramedullary tumour of immature myeloid cells. It is now known that the programmed death 1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) pathway suppresses the host antitumor responses and that these products are expressed on both tumour cells and tumour-infiltrating cells in various malignancies. However, little is known about the significance of PD-1/PD-L1 expression on tumour cells and tumour microenvironmental cells in MS. To investigate the clinicopathological significance of PD-1/PD-L1 expression in MS, we analyzed 98 patients by immunohist

T cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma complicated with myeloid sarcoma in an adult: A case report.

The present case report describes a rare case of T cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) in the lymph node with myeloid sarcoma in the pericardium. A 33-year-old Chinese male was admitted to hospital on 4 July 2015 exhibiting a fever and having experienced wheezing and fatigue for the previous 7 days. Routine pathological, computed tomographic, cytological and immunophenotypic observations revealed a diagnosis of T-LBL in the lymph node on 7 August 2015, without evidence of bone marrow (BM) involvement. The patient received induction chemotherapy for T-LBL and achieved partial remission. T

Myeloid sarcoma of the orbit without systemic recurrence of disease in an adult: A clinicopathological case report.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS), also known as granulocytic sarcoma (GS) or chloroma (named for the greenish hue attributed to the pigment of myeloperoxidase [MPO]), is a rare solid tumor with a predilection for the orbit. MS usually occurs in conjunction with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), or myeloproliferative disorder (MPS) and may be the harbinger of disease. Therefore, prompt diagnosis is essential for patient survival. We present a rare case of a 61 year old with an isolated orbital MS without active leukemia.

Myeloid Sarcoma of the Bladder in the Setting of Refractory Anemia with Excess Blasts-2 (RAEB-2).

Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor consisting of immature hematopoietic cells of granulocytic or monocytic differentiation. While rare, it can be seen in a variety of clinical settings and is most commonly associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). We present a rare case of myeloid sarcoma occurring in the bladder of a 56 year old male. Myeloid sarcoma may be difficult to recognize due to its rarity and clinical and morphologic similarity to many other conditions; however, swift diagnosis is necessary as it is c

Autopsy case of primary myelofibrosis in which myeloid sarcoma was the initial manifestation of tumor progression.

Myeloid sarcoma (MyS) is defined as an extramedullary tumor-forming neoplasm consisting of immature myeloid cells with/without maturation. We experienced a case involving a 68-year-old Japanese male patient who had been followed-up for four years with a diagnosis of chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis/primary myelofibrosis (PMF) and noticed a painful mass in his left axilla. A wedge biopsy characterized the lesion as MyS that displayed megakaryoblastic/megakaryocytic differentiation. As his complete blood count included a few myeloid blasts (1% of WBC) and a bone marrow biopsy detected fibrosis w

Reversible renal failure due to bilateral renal sarcoma in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia.

A 68-year-old male presented with acute myeloid leukemia, renal failure, hypokalemia, and enlarged kidneys on renal ultrasound. Renal biopsy revealed massive leukemic infiltration of the kidney. After systemic chemotherapy, the patient developed tumor lysis syndrome followed by a phase of proximal tubule dysfunction presenting as polyuria and diverse electrolyte abnormalities. In time, renal function returned to normal, as did kidney size. This report shows that renal failure, enlargement of the kidneys, and tubule dysfunction in the course of AML infiltrating the kidneys can be reversed by tr

[Granulocytic sarcoma of the prostate presenting with urinary obstruction which progressed to acute myeloid leukemia].

A 71-year-old man presented with progressive dysuria. Several imaging examinations indicated possibility of prostate tumor, therefore he underwent prostate biopsy. This resulted in a diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma of the prostate. Since bone marrow appeared normal on aspiration biopsy, he was treated with local irradiation. Prostate swelling then markedly diminished and his symptoms disappeared. However, four months later he progressed to AML. He then received systemic chemotherapy and achieved complete remission. We discuss the management of granulocytic sarcoma when findings do not indica

Cytology of ascitic fluid in a patient with granulocytic sarcoma (extramedullary myeloid tumor). A case report.

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is the rare extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia that may precede or be concurrent with leukemic infiltration of bone marrow or herald blastic transformation of a chronic myeloproliferative disorder. It has been found in most body sites and shows no age or sex predilection, necessitating its inclusion in the differential diagnosis of undifferentiated neoplasms. CASE: A 36-year-old female presented with a three-year history of abdominal pain, jaundice and fluctuating abdominal girth. Cytology of the ascitic fluid revealed myeloid cells of
