Use of MALDI-TOF MS for fungal species distribution of interdigital intertrigo in seafarers, Dakar, Senegal.

To determine fungal species distribution of interdigital intertrigo among seafarers in Dakar, Senegal, a cross-sectional study was carried out from May to August 2017 among seafarers clinically diagnosed with interdigital intertrigo. A questionnaire was filled to each patient before sampling the affected folds and transporting to Aristide Le Dantec University Hospital where mycological analyses were realized. Species identification by MALDI-TOF MS was performed in Marseille, France. In total, 169 men (21-66 years) were included. Few of them (3%) had a high level of education and the duration o…

Seroprevalence and Risk Factors of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Free-Range Chickens in Senegal, West Africa.

In sub-Saharan Africa, few studies have addressed the environmental determinants of the incidence of Toxoplasma gondii infection. Free-range chickens are regarded as sensitive indicators for environmental contamination with T. gondii oocysts due to their ground-feeding behavior and have been used as sentinels. A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2018 to estimate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in free-range chickens from Senegal, West Africa, using the modified agglutination test. Sampling was performed in two regions of the country: Saint-Louis, a Sahelian ar…

No barrier breakdown between human and cattle schistosome species in the Senegal River Basin in the face of hybridisation.

Schistosomiasis is widely distributed along the Senegal River Basin (SRB), affecting both the human population and their livestock. Damming of the Senegal River for irrigation purposes in the 1980s induced ecological changes that resulted in a large outbreak of Schistosoma mansoni, followed a few years later by an increase and spread of Schistosoma haematobium infections. The presence of hybrid crosses between the human and cattle schistosomes, S. haematobium and Schistosoma bovis, respectively, is adding complexity to the disease epidemiology in this area, and questions the strength of the sp…

[Sandflies Fauna of the Focus of Keur Moussa: Current Data on Diversity and Seasonal Variations (Thies, Senegal)].

An inter-epidemic oversight was conducted in the cutaneous leishmaniasis focus of Keur Moussa (Thies region) between June 2015 and October 2016, more than 20 years after the last epidemic. The three sampling methods (adhesive traps, CDC light traps, and indoor pyrethroids sprays) allowed the capture of 1,746 sand flies belonging to 2 genera and 24 species, those involved in the transmission of leishmaniasis in Senegal, as well as 11 new species for the focus. The vector of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal, Phlebotomus duboscqi Neveu-Lemaire, 1906, represents 10.9% of this fauna. Sergen…

Upper respiratory infections in a rural area with reduced malaria transmission in Senegal: a pathogens community study.

BACKGROUND: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are common causes of febrile illnesses in many settings in Senegal. These infections are usually managed presumptively due to lack of appropriate diagnostic tools. This situation, can lead to poor management of febrile illness or antibiotic misuse. In addition, there are limited data on the spectrum of pathogens commonly responsible for these ARI. This study was conducted to explore the pathogens community among patients with acute respiratory infection in a rural area in Senegal. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted from August to Dece…

Ex-ante benefit-cost analysis of the elimination of a Glossina palpalis gambiensis population in the Niayes of Senegal.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, the Government of Senegal embarked on a campaign to eliminate a Glossina palpalis gambiensis population from the Niayes area (∼ 1000 km(2)) under the umbrella of the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomosis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC). The project was considered an ecologically sound approach to intensify cattle production. The elimination strategy includes a suppression phase using insecticide impregnated targets and cattle, and an elimination phase using the sterile insect technique, necessary to eliminate tsetse in this area. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Three main c…

Informed push distribution of contraceptives in Senegal reduces stockouts and improves quality of family planning services.

Contraceptive use in Senegal is among the lowest in the world and has barely increased over the past 5 years, from 10% of married women in 2005 to 12% in 2011. Contraceptive stockouts in public facilities, where 85% of women access family planning services, are common. In 2011, we conducted a supply chain study of 33 public-sector facilities in Pikine and Guediawaye districts of the Dakar region to understand the magnitude and root causes of stockouts. The study included stock audits, surveys with 156 consumers, and interviews with facility staff, managers, and other stakeholders. At the facil…

Spread of Influenza A(H1N1) oseltamivir-resistant viruses in Africa in 2008 confirmed by multiple introductions in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Among Influenza neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs), oseltamivir corresponds to the most widely used agent to treat influenza diseas … tamivir resistance-associated mutation (H274Y) in the NA gene. In contrast all isolates isolated in Senegal in 2007 were sensitive to oseltamivir. These results were first confirmed by finding high IC50 values using a phenotypic testing for oseltamivir resistance, and secondly by sequencing the whole NA gene. Regarding M2 gene, no mutation associated to a …

Seroprevalence of Leishmania infantum in a rural area of Senegal: analysis of risk factors involved in transmission to humans.

Whereas Leishmania infantum, the agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), is well known in North Africa, very limited data exist on its spread in West Africa, where mainly cutaneous leishmaniasis has been widely reported. Nevertheless, dogs infected with L. infantum were recently found in the Mont Rolland District in Senegal. To provide a better understanding of L. infantum epidemiology in this area, clinical and serological surveys were carried out to determine the seroprevalence of L. infantum-specific antibodies in the human population. In parallel, an analysis of environmental and individual …

[Disseminated histoplasmosis due to Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii in Senegal. A case in HIV-infected patient].

INTRODUCTION: Histoplasmosis, a disease due to Histoplasma capsulatum, is an invasive opportunistic fungal infection, endemic in Africa. So, the occurrence of african histoplasmosis associated with HIV infection has been rarely reported despite the high prevalence of both pathogens in this area. We report the first case of disseminated african histoplasmosis in an HIV-infected Senegalese patient. OBSERVATION: A patient, 50-year-old has been admitted for umbilicate, necrotic and disseminated papulonodular lesions with oral infection, fever and reduction of total body mass. HIV1 test was positi…

Multiplicity of Plasmodium falciparum infection in asymptomatic children in Senegal: relation to transmission, age and erythrocyte variants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living in malaria endemic areas generally harbour multiple parasite strains. Multiplicity of infection (MOI) can be an indicator of immune status. However, whether this is good or bad for the development of immunity to malaria, is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to examine the MOI in asymptomatic children between two and ten years of age and to relate it to erythrocyte variants, clinical attacks, transmission levels and other parasitological indexes. METHODS: Study took place in Niakhar area in Senegal, where malaria is mesoendemic and seasonal. Three hundre…
