Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress and Sexual Concerns: The Intermediary Effects of Executive Functioning on Profiles of Youth Who Have Sexually Harmed.

There are demonstrated links in the general population between developmental adversity, associated trauma symptoms, and executive functioning difficulties in children and youth. However, research on links among these indicators and their relationship to antisocial behavior more broadly in samples of youth who have sexually harmed is only beginning to emerge. Some research indicates that intermediary factors like sexual concerns may be critical in understanding this population. This study explored relationships between trauma symptoms, sexual concerns, executive functioning, and their relations

Theoretical perspectives of male sexual abuse: conceptualization of a case study.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the traumatic impact that sexual abuse can have on a young male's development by addressing mediating dispositions that can render a child vulnerable to the effects of sexual abuse. Consideration is given to three different theoretical perspectives that are not exclusive to male victims but shed light on the impact that sexual abuse can have on the development of a young boy. These perspectives include early family relationships and attachment theory, developmental psychopathology, and trauma theory. These theoretical lenses provide a conceptual un

The validation of the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40) in a sample of inpatients.

This study examined the construct validity of the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40; Elliot & Briere, 1992) in a sample of 130 female psychiatric inpatients. Consistent with other findings, the TSC-40 displayed criterion-related validity in relation to childhood sexual abuse. Survivors of sexual abuse obtained significantly higher scores than those without such a history on the overall TSC-40 and on each of the six subscales, except the Depression subscale. Convergent validity of three subscales was demonstrated, and divergent validity on the total TSC-40 and each of its subscales was establ

Psychological management of victims of sexual assault.

Sexual assault, as a crime of violence, induces a life crisis which inflicts major psychological and physiological trauma upon the victim. Lack of mutual consent is present in all sexual assaults. Post-traumatic symptoms occur immediately and for a large percentage of victims this trauma is not integrated for many years. Symptoms include the classic triad of post-traumatic stress symptoms of haunting, intrusive recollections, numbing or constriction of feelings and focus and lowered threshold of anxious arousal subsequent to experiencing intense fear, terror and loss of control. Long term effe

The moderating effects of ethnicity on key predictors of trauma in child welfare involved adolescents.

Key predictors of trauma were examined using a multi-group analysis of a nationally representative sample of 716 child welfare involved youth ages 11-17. Results indicate that co-occurring clinical depression was associated with trauma across all racial/ethnic groups. Results also support that youth's ethnicity moderates the relationship between gender, history of sexual abuse and sexual orientation and the development of trauma. Contrary to prior research, trauma was not significantly associated with substance abuse or having experienced out of home placement for all ethnic groups. Implicatio

Childhood Maltreatment Experiences, Attachment, Sexual Offending: Testing a Theory.

The aim of this study was to empirically examine the theoretical model proposed by Grady, Levenson, and Bolder used to explain the relationships between experiencing trauma, attachment styles, and risk factors associated with sexual offending. The specific risk factors tested were emotional, behavioral, and cognitive regulation deficits. The research questions were as follows: (1) What specific childhood traumatic experiences (physical and sexual abuse and/or other domestic trauma events) are associated with anxious-ambivalent and anxious-avoidant attachments? (2) Are anxious-ambivalent and an

Relationships among childhood trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and dissociation in men living with HIV/AIDS.

This study examined the relationships among dissociation, childhood trauma and sexual abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in HIV-positive men. Data were collected from 167 men enrolled in a randomized clinical trial that examined a group therapy intervention to decrease HIV-related risk behavior and trauma-related stress symptoms. Participants completed the Trauma History Questionnaire, the Impact of Events Scale-Revised, and the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire. Overall, 35.3% of the participants reported having experienced childhood sexual abuse. A total of 5

The Forgotten Survivor: A Forensic Nursing Perspective on Secondary and Tertiary Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Partners, parents, siblings, children, and other close supports of sexual assault survivors often experience significant emotional, psychological, relational, and physiological consequences following an assault. Although forensic nurses frequently recognize distress among these affected survivor groups, they are rarely incorporated into formal assessment, education, referral, and intervention processes. AIM: To examine the secondary and tertiary effects of sexual assault within family systems and explore implications for forensic nursing practice. METHODS: This conceptual article

Sexual assault and white matter hyperintensities among midlife women.

Traumatic experiences have been linked to poor mental and physical health. However, there has been little examination of their relationship to neuroimaging markers of cerebrovascular risk. White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are markers of brain small vessel disease. WMHs can be detected decades before the onset of dementia and other disorders and can serve as early markers for these brain disorders. We tested whether traumatic experiences were associated with brain WMH volume among midlife women. In the MsBrain study, 145 women (mean age = 59 years) without cardiovascular disease, stroke, or

Understanding the relationships between trauma type and individual posttraumatic stress symptoms: a cross-sectional study of a clinical sample of children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Characteristics of traumatic events may be associated with the level and specific manifestation of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). This study examined the differences and similarities between overall levels, profiles and networks of PTSS after sexual trauma, domestic violence, community violence, non-interpersonal trauma, sudden loss or serious illness of a loved one, and severe bullying or threats. METHODS: PTSS were measured in a clinical sample of 4,921 children and adolescents (6-18 years old, M = 14.0, SD = 2.7, 63.7% female) referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Heal…

Exposure to childhood trauma increases risk of opioid use disorder among people prescribed opioids for chronic non-cancer pain.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about childhood trauma exposure and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) among people prescribed opioids for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP). We aimed to (1) describe childhood trauma exposure among this population, and (2) examine if childhood trauma exposure was an independent risk factor for OUD among people prescribed opioids for CNCP. METHODS: This study used baseline data from 1514 people prescribed opioids for CNCP in Australia. We used latent class analysis to characterise participants by five indicators of childhood trauma exposure and logistic regression to character

Abuse and neglect in childhood: relationship to personality disorder diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Childhood history of abuse and neglect has been associated with personality disorders and has been observed in subjects with lifetime histories of suicidality and self-injury. Most of these findings have been generated from inpatient clinical samples. METHODS: This study evaluated self-rated indices of sustained childhood abuse and neglect in an outpatient sample of well-characterized personality disorder subjects (n=182) to determine the relative associations of childhood trauma indices to specific personality disorder diagnoses or clusters and to lifetime history of suicide atte

Sexual abuse and physical neglect in childhood are associated with affective theory of mind in adults with schizophrenia.

Whereas childhood trauma is associated with reduced nonsocial cognition in schizophrenia, research on the relationship between childhood trauma and social cognition is limited and mixed. The aim of this study was to examine the association between childhood trauma and theory of mind (ToM) in persons with schizophrenia (n = 68) compared to healthy control participants (n = 70). Childhood trauma was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), providing information on physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect. ToM was indexed by the Movie fo

The Sexual Desire Conflict Scale for Women: construction, internal consistency, and two initial validity tests.

The development of a 33-item Sexual Desire Conflict Scale for Women is described. The scale was designed to measure women's experiences of subjective discomfort and conflict in relation to sexual desire. 54 women participated: 18 survivors of childhood sexual abuse, 18 survivors of nonsexual trauma, 18 controls with no histories of trauma. Three factors accounted for 25.6, 12.9 and 7.6% of the variance. While no social desirability confounding was detected, the three groups had very different scores. Suggestions for research and clinical application are made.
