Knowledge and Awareness of Sickle Cell Trait Among Young African American Adults.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) places individuals at risk of passing an abnormal hemoglobin gene to biological children and is associated with rare but serious complications. The present study sought to examine knowledge of SCT and awareness of personal trait status among 258 young African American adults. Participants were surveyed regarding demographics, medical history, and sources of sickle cell information before completing a trait knowledge questionnaire. Overall, participants possessed significant misinformation about the condition. Women and those who had learned about sickle cell from famili…

Association among sickle cell trait, fitness, and cardiovascular risk factors in CARDIA.

The contribution of sickle cell trait (SCT) to racial disparities in cardiopulmonary fitness is not known, despite concerns that SCT is associated with exertion-related sudden death. We evaluated the association of SCT status with cross-sectional and longitudinal changes in fitness and risk for hypertension, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome over the course of 25 years among 1995 African Americans (56% women, 18-30 years old) in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Overall, the prevalence of SCT was 6.8% (136/1995) in CARDIA, and over the course of 25 years, 46% …

Sickle Cell Trait Screening of Collegiate Athletes: Ethical Reasons for Program Reform.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires all student-athletes have their sickle cell trait (SCT) status confirmed prior to athletic participation. The NCAA approved the screening program in 2010 for institutions participating in Division I athletics and extended it in subsequent years to institutions at Division II and III levels. Ethical concerns about the controversial policy focus on its mandatory nature and potential impact on student-athletes, particularly through stigmatization of and discrimination against those with SCT. Organizations, such as the American Society o…

Mechanical differences of sickle cell trait (SCT) and normal red blood cells.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is a condition in which an individual inherits one sickle hemoglobin gene (HbS) and one normal beta hemoglobin gene (HbA). It has been hypothesized that under extreme physical stress, the compromised mechanical properties of the red blood cells (RBCs) may be the underlying mechanism of clinical complications of sickle cell trait individuals. However, whether sickle cell trait (SCT) should be treated as physiologically normal remains controversial. In this work, the mechanical properties (i.e., shear modulus and viscosity) of individual RBCs were quantified using a micro…

Spontaneous central retinal artery occlusion in a teenager with sickle cell trait.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) is traditionally considered a benign condition by ophthalmologists. Several studies have reported ocular complications in SCT, but these complications have been described as a consequence of trauma, exertion, and associated systemic disorders. We here in the report a case of an Arab teen boy, who presented with a sudden loss of vision in his left eye of 1 h duration. The ocular examination revealed acute central retinal artery occlusion. He underwent a series of laboratory and radiological investigations. The blood investigations revealed SCT and abnormal partial thromb…

Biochemical and immunological mechanisms by which sickle cell trait protects against malaria.

Sickle cell trait (HbAS) is the best-characterized genetic polymorphism known to protect against falciparum malaria. Although the protective effect of HbAS against malaria is well known, the mechanism(s) of protection remain unclear. A number of biochemical and immune-mediated mechanisms have been proposed, and it is likely that multiple complex mechanisms are responsible for the observed protection. Increased evidence for an immune component of protection as well as novel mechanisms, such as enhanced tolerance to disease mediated by HO-1 and reduced parasitic growth due to translocation of ho…

[Does the sickle cell trait (heterozygous carrier status) confer protection against malaria?].

The high frequency of the gene for sickle-cell hemoglobin in malaria-endemic regions is believed to be due to an advantage in surviving malaria. We report the case of a woman with both malaria and hemoglobin S.

Livedoid vasculopathy associated with sickle cell trait: significant improvement on aspirin treatment.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a chronic, recurrent, painful cutaneous disease manifesting as longstanding distal lower extremity ulcers that scar leaving stellate atrophic lesions known as 'atrophie blanche'. A significant number of cases have been associated with thrombophilic abnormalities. In this study, we describe, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of LV only associated with sickle cell trait with significant improvement on aspirin.

Maternal attitudes about sickle cell trait identification in themselves and their infants.

INTRODUCTION: We examined knowledge and attitudes about sickle cell trait (SCT) and sickle cell disease (SCD) in women whose infants were identified with SCT through newborn screening. METHODS: Mothers of infants identified with SCT by newborn screening were contacted 8 to 52 weeks post partum. Mothers were recruited if: (1) they participated in a postpartum newborn screening survey and agreed to be recontacted if their infant had a positive newborn screening result (n = 27); (2) they revealed that their child had SCT during participation in a similar study regarding newborn screening for cys…

Sickle cell trait and fatal rhabdomyolysis in football training: a case study.

We report the athletic, the clinical, and the pathological details of a case of fatal rhabdomyolysis during training in a college football player with sickle cell trait (SCT) who collapsed minutes after running 16 successive sprints of 100 yd each. The player, 19 yr old, African American, was apparently healthy when he took the field for the conditioning run. No exertional heat illness was present. After collapsing on-field, the player soon went into coma and developed fulminant rhabdomyolysis, profound lactic acidosis, acute myoglobinuric renal failure, refractory hyperkalemia, and disseminat…

Effects of short supramaximal exercise on hemorheology in sickle cell trait carriers.

This study compared the hemorheological profile at rest and in response to a short supramaximal exercise test between sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers and a control group. Eight SCT carriers and eight control subjects performed a ramp exercise test on a cycle ergometer conducted to maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). One week later, they performed a supramaximal exercise test consisting of pedaling for 1 min at 110% VO2max. Blood viscosity (eta(b)), plasma viscosity (eta(p)), hematocrit (Hct) and red blood cell (RBC) rigidity were assessed at rest, at the end of exercise and at the 15th, 30th and …

Hemorheology, sickle cell trait, and alpha-thalassemia in athletes: effects of exercise.

PURPOSE: This study investigated hemorheological parameters in response to exercise in sickle cell trait (SCT) athletes with or without alpha-thalassemia METHODS: Six athletes with SCT (HbAS), 7 athletes with SCT and alpha-thalassemia (HbASAT), and 10 control athletes (HbAA) performed a progressive and maximal exercise test on cycloergometer. Blood viscosity (etab), plasma viscosity (etap), etab at corrected hematocrit (etab45), hematocrit (Hct), and red blood cell (RBC) rigidity were assessed at rest, at maximal exercise and 24 h after exercise RESULTS: etab and etap were not different betw…
