We report a case of laparoscopic sigmoid colon resection for sigmoid colon cancer after cystectomy for bladder cancer and ileal conduit surgery for urinary tract reconstruction. The patient was a male in his 70s. The patient presented to the Department of Gastroenterology with the complaint of nausea and loss of appetite, and findings that were suspicious of intestinal obstruction. Colonscopy performed in five patients because of narrowing of the sigmoid colon with intramural diverticula revealed several bright red, slightly elevated patches. In three patients, some bright red polypoid structures 1 cm in size and hemispherical in shape were also present. On light microscopy the polyps showed the features of transitional mucosa but revealed a different pattern of mucus secretion.

The sigmoid colon differs from the remaining colon anatomically, functionally and by increased incidence of disease. Occasionally it may be very difficult to differentiate diverticulitis of the sigma from a malignant tumor. It is felt that hypotonic sigmoidography improves the diagnostic accuracy. Selective angiography of the inferior mesenteric artery may be of further diagnostic help. Pharmaco-angiographic examinations with Eupaverin yielded no better results.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To assess the accuracy of a new generation endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)(GF-M200) in pre-operative staging of recto-sigmoid colon carcinoma invasion and lymph node metastasis.
METHODOLOGY: Seventy-three patients with biopsy proven colon cancer were included in this study. These comprised 60 patients with rectal carcinoma and 13 patients with sigmoid carcinoma. All patients were pre-operatively examined by EUS. Pathological findings of the depth of tumor invasion and presence of lymph node metastasis were correlated with EUS.
