Silver-protein (core-shell) nanoparticle production using spent mushroom substrate.

A simple route for the synthesis of silver-protein (core-shell) nanoparticles using spent mushroom substrate (SMS) has been demonstrated in this work. SMS exhibits an organic surface that reduces silver ions and stabilizes the silver nanoparticles by a secreted protein. The silver nitrate solution incubated with SMS changed to a yellow color from 24 h onward, indicating the formation of silver nanoparticles. Potentiometric determination of cysteine with thiol sensitive silver-mercury electrode.

A potentiometric procedure for cysteine thiol group concentration monitoring in media generating free radicals was developed using a thiol specific silver-mercury electrode. Electrolytic deposition of mercury on a silver wire and treatment with 20 mM cysteine in 0.5 M NaOH were used to produce the electrode. A silver-chloride electrode in saturated KCl was the reference. Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is characterized by pre- and postnatal growth failure and other dysmorphic features. The syndrome is genetically heterogeneous, but maternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 7 has been demonstrated in approximately 7% of cases. Pelvi-calyceal cast formation following silver nitrate treatment for chyluria.

A case of chyluria is reported in which anuria followed instillation of 3% silver nitrate into the collecting system of both kidneys, with unusual radiographic features. Plain radiographic, ultrasound and computed tomographic findings are discussed. To the best of the authors' knowledge this has not been previously described in the literature.

Silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions in hypertrophic and keloid scars.

Silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) have been widely used as a marker of cellular activity and proliferation. In a retrospective study, we investigated the potential value of AgNORs in 12 hypertrophic and 24 keloid scar tissues. Ten normal skin tissues served as controls. A standard silver-staining method was used, and the mean AgNOR count of dermal fibroblastic cells in each tissue was determined. Assessment of silver-coated urinary catheter toxicity by cell culture.

The toxicity of silver-coated urinary catheters was assessed using a cell culture technique. The inhibitory effect of catheter extracts on the uptake of 3H-labelled thymidine by mouse fibroblasts was measured. The results show that silver-coating had no toxic effect whereas silvernitrate and silversulphate coating did have a toxic effect.

Silver polish: another source of contact dermatitis reactions to thiourea.

A cleaning woman in a restaurant became sensitized to thiourea in a silver polish. The dermatitis persisted for several months and occasionally flared up after exposure to sunlight, even after she no longer used the product. Patch testing and photopatch testing showed that she had both contact and photocontact allergy.
