The therapeutic effect of tiopronin on incipient senile cataracts was evaluated in 150 cases (275 eyes) by a double-blind study using nonactive placebo. A more favorable tendency to visual acuity was noted in the tiopronin than in the placebo group. The slit-lamp microscopic findings showed a statistically significant difference between the tiopronin and the placebo groups. Integrated judgement revealed tiopronin to be significantly effective as compared with the placebo. After implanting a disc (0,25 mm thickness and 1,5 mm diameter) of soft contact lens materials ("Soflens", "Hydroflex", "Hydron") in the anterior chamber of rabbits through a lancet incision, the reactions of iris, aqueous and cornea were observed for six months at regular intervals with slit lamp photograph. At the place where the disc touched the iris one could see during half a year periodic hyperaemia iridis and foreign-substance-granuloma of the iris. The cause of these reactions is a toxin in the HEMA. The reactions are more intense than with PMMA.

Slit-lamp examination of the lens of 80 normal controls aged between 17 and 36 years has shown that the opacities are very common (91.5%). The total opacities count (TOC) varies between 0 and 109, with a mean value of 14.65 and a standard deviation of 18.43. The study of 10 families of myotonic dystrophy supports the value of such a test in early diagnosis of this condition. The value of the TOC in carrier detection of Lowe's syndrome and in the diagnosis of "formes frustes" of hereditary cataract is discussed. The possible application of this test in genetic counselling is stressed.

A 66-year-old man, while taking care of his horse, sustained a blunt, non-penetrating injury to the right side of his face, which damaged his eye. On slit lamp examination, iris dialysis and crystalline dislocation in the vitreous chamber were observed. On presentation, his best correct visual acuity was hand motion. A 23 G vitrectomy and subsequently an iris reconstruction and a glued intraocular lens implant were performed. Visual acuity reached +0.1 logMAR 1 month after surgery and remained stable after 12 months' follow-up.

METHODS: This case series reports on the clinical and histopathologic features of 3 patients with enlarging, cystic, brown, pigmented, conjunctival lesions.
RESULTS: Slit-lamp examination showed cystic melanotic lesions of bulbar conjunctiva. Histopathologic examination of the biopsy specimens showed epithelial lined cysts in the substantia propria, goblet cells, and secondary pigmentation of basilar keratinocytes.
