CT features, mimics and atypical presentations of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

The term stromal tumor was coined in 1983 by Clark and Mazur for smooth muscle neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are nonepithelial tumors arising from the interstitial cells of Cajal, which express KIT protein-CD117 on immunohistochemistry. GIST can arise anywhere in the GIT, including the mesentery, omentum, and retroperitoneum.

Unusual uveal tract tumor: mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body.

Benign smooth muscle tumor, leiomyoma, can occur throughout the whole body, including the most common sites of the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts, less frequently in the skin, and rarely in the deep soft tissue or uveal tract. A 23-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 4 month history of a pigmented ciliary body mass in her left eye. The tumor's clinical appearance and ancillary data were initially consistent with malignant melanoma. However, instead of enucleation, sclerotomy with a tumor biopsy was performed because of the patient's young age and the possibility of benign tumors…

Simotang oral liquid alleviates functional dyspepsia-related motility dysfunction through Ca2+-dependent smooth muscle contraction and Nrf2/NF-κB modulation.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction involving heterogeneous motor, sensory, immune, and oxidative stress-related mechanisms. Simotang oral liquid (SMT), a traditional Chinese medicine formulation used for dyspeptic and gastrointestinal motility-related symptoms, has not been evaluated with an integrated clinical, functional, and molecular framework. This single-arm prospective pre-post study assessed gastric emptying by the 13C-octanoic acid breath test, gastric electrical activity by electrogastrography, postprandial tolerance by nutrient drink testing, symptom sc

A case of long-term unchanged calcifying fibrous tumor.

A calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare benign tumor that may occur in any part of the body. We report the case of an asymptomatic 21-year-old woman with thoracic tumors. Chest computed tomography showed multiple masses in the left costophrenic angle. As we were unable to diagnose the tumor with a CT-guided needle biopsy, we performed a thoracoscopic biopsy. We found smooth multilobulated masses on the pleura and multiple small nodules around the main tumors. Partial resection of the tumor was performed by VATS. Histological examination revealed that the tumor had hypocellular fibroscleroti

A Rare Paratesticular Leiomyosarcoma Presenting as a Painless Scrotal Mass in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

Leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are malignant tumors originating from smooth muscle and rarely found in the scrotum. LMS has an insidious presentation that is often misdiagnosed as a benign lesion. This report outlines an innocuous case of paratesticular leiomyosarcoma while focusing on the diagnosis and treatment paratesticular LMS. We report the case of an 84-year-old male who presented with a painless left scrotal swelling of 5 days' duration. Imaging and tumor markers suggested a paratesticular mass suspicious for malignancy. Surgical excision revealed a Fédération Nationale des Centres de Lutte Con

A giant paratesticular leiomyoma presenting as a painless scrotal mass: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that are rarely found in the genitourinary tract. Paratesticular leiomyomas are exceedingly uncommon, representing a small subset of intrascrotal neoplasms. Intrascrotal tumors comprise a heterogeneous group of lesions, with paratesticular tumors accounting for only about 5% of all testicular masses. Awareness of this rare entity is essential, as it may clinically mimic malignant testicular tumors, potentially leading to unnecessary radical orchiectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 55-year-old male who develo…

Spontaneous histiocytic sarcoma originating from the epididymis in a CD-1 mouse.

We report a histiocytic sarcoma originating from the epididymis observed in a 110-week-old male CD-1 mouse in a carcinogenicity study. At necropsy, no lesions were observed in the epididymis. Histologically, a neoplastic lesion was observed in the cauda of the epididymis that was well demarcated from the surrounding tissues. The lesion mainly consisted of spindle-shaped tumor cells with oval to elongated nuclei and abundant eosinophilic or foamy cytoplasm. The tumor cells were arranged in a fascicular pattern, interlacing bundles, or a whorl pattern. The nuclei showed mild atypia with irregula

Leiomyoma in the posterior choroid: a case report.

Smooth muscle tumor of the uveal tract is rare, and mostly located in the cilio-choroidal area. We report a unique case of posterior choroidal leiomyoma in a 27-yr-old man. Ophthalmoscopic examination disclosed an 11 mm-sized mass on the fundus two-disc diameters apart from the optic disc. With a suspicion of amelanotic melanoma, the globe was enucleated. The mass occupied the whole thickness of choroidal stroma beneath the pigmented retinal epithelium and composed of spindle cells arranged in intersecting fascicles. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated immunoreactivities of the tumor cell…

Chronic OVA allergen challenged TNF p55/p75 receptor deficient mice have reduced airway remodeling.

The role of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in contributing to allergen induced airway remodeling in asthma is unknown. In this study we have utilized a mouse model of chronic OVA allergen induced airway remodeling to determine whether TNF p55/p75 receptor deficient mice (abbreviated TNF-R KO) had reduced levels of airway remodeling. Chronic OVA challenged WT mice had significantly increased levels of lung eosinophilic inflammation as well as features of airway remodeling including increased peribronchial fibrosis, thickness of the peribronchial smooth muscle layer, mucus expression, and depos

The nonrandom regional distribution of uterine leiomyomas: a clue to histogenesis?

Although uterine leiomyomas are a major public health problem, very little is known about their etiology or histogenesis. To seek clues as to why the myometrium so frequently gives rise to these tumors, we attempted to determine if the regional distribution of leiomyomas was uniform. It appears that the proportion of leiomyomas in the premenopausal (0.8%) and postmenopausal (3.7%) cervix may be substantially less than the proportion of smooth muscle in the premenopausal (7.3%) and postmenopausal (17%) cervix. These data suggest that the smooth muscle cells of the corpus uteri may be at higher

Mediastinal cavernous angioleiomyoma: A case report and review of literature.

Angioleiomyoma is a type of pericyte tumor with a benign biological behavior. It typically features proliferation of mature perivascular smooth muscle cells around blood vessels. Angioleiomyoma may be categorized into solid, cavernous or venous subtypes. Usually, it occurs in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue, while the rare cavernous subtype is most common in the upper extremities. Only a small number of cases of angioleiomyoma located in the mediastinum have been reported to date. In addition, there are few reports of mediastinal angioleiomyoma described as a cavernous histopathological subt

Nipple leiomyoma: A rare neoplasm with a broad spectrum of histologic appearances.

Cutaneous leiomyomas are rare benign smooth-muscle tumors. These lesions are distinguished based on their cell of origin and are subclassified as pilar leiomyoma, angioleiomyoma, and genital-type leiomyoma. Nipple leiomyoma is the least common genital-type leiomyoma, arising from the dartoic muscle cell of the nipple. Histologic examination of the lesion is necessary for definitive diagnosis, and these uncommon tumors can pose a diagnostic challenge. We describe herein a series of six nipple leiomyomas with a spectrum of histologic appearances.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the uterus: report of four cases.

Uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is very rare, and there have been only 27 reported cases. The differentiation of the tumor has been enigmatic, and the biologic behavior remains unclear. This study describes the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of four cases of uterine PEComa. The patients were 30, 32, 36, and 40 years old, and none of them had tuberous sclerosis complex. The size of the tumors ranged from 1 to 30 cm in diameter, and 3 of the 4 tumors were confined in the uterus. One tumor involved the left ovary and omentum. Microscopically, the tumor

Anti-EGFR antibody efficiently and specifically inhibits human TSC2-/- smooth muscle cell proliferation. Possible treatment options for TSC and LAM.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a tumor syndrome caused by mutations in TSC1 or TSC2 genes, is characterized by the development of hamartomas. We previously isolated, from an angiomyolipoma of a TSC2 patient, a homogenous population of smooth muscle-like cells (TSC2(-/-) ASM cells) that have a mutation in the TSC2 gene as well as TSC2 loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and consequently, do not produce the TSC2 gene product, tuberin. TSC2(-/-) ASM cell proliferation is EGF-dependent. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Effects of EGF on proliferation of TSC2(-/-) ASM cells and TSC2(-/-) ASM cells tr

Isolation and growth of smooth muscle-like cells derived from tuberous sclerosis complex-2 human renal angiomyolipoma: epidermal growth factor is the required growth factor.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a tumor suppressor gene disorder characterized by mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes. These mutations lead to the development of benign tumors involving smooth muscle cells, causing life-threatening lymphangioleiomyomatosis. We isolated and characterized two types of cells bearing a mutation in TSC2 exon 18 from a renal angiomyolipoma of a TSC patient: one population of alpha-actin-positive smooth muscle-like cells with loss of heterozygosity for the TSC2 gene (A(+) cells) and another of nonloss of heterozygosity keratin 8/18-positive epithelial-like cells
