Chronic inhibition of astrocytic aquaporin-4 induces autistic-like behavior in control rat offspring similar to maternal exposure to valproic acid.

Social communication and interaction deficits, memory impairment, and anxiety-like behavior are characterized in many people identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A thorough understanding of the specific aspects that contribute to the deficiencies associated with ASD can aid research into the etiology of the disorder while also providing targets for more effective intervention. As part of the ASD pathophysiology, alterations in synaptogenesis and abnormal network connections were seen in high-order brain areas, which control social behavior and communication. The early emergence of m

Individuals with schizophrenia display behaviour inconsistent with learned social impressions during a gambling task.

Many studies of social perception and judgement have required individuals to make evaluations of social parameters based on static presentations of social stimuli. In the current study, we assessed whether individuals with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder and community controls differed in their judgements of others based on a series of computerized encounters designed to simulate impression formation over time. Twenty-eight community controls and 29 individuals with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder completed 25 gambling interactions with three different computer partners. After interacting

Autistic children: diagnosis and clinical features.

Autism is one of the behaviorally defined developmental disorders of brain function. It has a variety of genetic and nongenetic etiologies, with etiology being unknown in the majority of children. Boys are more frequently affected than girls. Manifest in the preschool years, autism always affects sociability, communication, and the child's repertoire of activities and interests. Autism encompasses children with a broad range of severities and a variety of other signs of brain dysfunction. These include motor signs, notably stereotypies; abnormal responses to a variety of sensory stimuli; and d

A close look at sociality in DSM criteria.

PURPOSE: The importance of sociality in psychology and psychotherapy is quite undisputed; however, this construct risks being underestimated in psychiatric nosography. The aim of the review was to assess the relevance of sociality in DSM 5 criteria. METHOD: Sociality-laden criteria of 192 selected DSM categories have been identified through a textual grid. Second, the criteria have been classified into 6 categories, i.e., (1) Affiliation and Attachment (AA), (2) Social Communication (SC), (3) Perception and Understanding of Others (PUO), (4) Culture, (5) Clinical Significance Criterion (CSC)

[Diagnosis and Therapeutic Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adulthood].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by disturbed social interaction and communication as well as stereotyped or repetitive behaviors and interests. Although adults with ASD often acquire complex compensatory strategies that help them master social situations in a rule-based fashion, they still show impairments in intuitive processing of social signals and especially nonverbal communication in complex everyday situations. This constitutes a particular challenge for the psychotherapy of ASD. Psychotherapists are required to explicitly inform and act as an agent of the non-autistic

Psychiatric impairment, social contact, and violent behavior: evidence from a study of outpatient-committed persons with severe mental disorder.

The need to better understand and manage risk of violent behavior among people with severe mental illness in community care settings is increasingly being recognized, as public-sector mental health systems face mandates to provide more cost-effective services in less restrictive environments. The potential for serious violence in a small proportion of severely mentally ill (SMI) individuals has emerged as a key factor that increases cost and limits continuity and normalization of community-based services for populations with psychiatric disabilities. A major challenge to developing better stra

Prevalence of Four Types of Social Support and Their Relation to Mental Health among low-income U.S. Veterans: Implications for Community Health.

To provide a comprehensive examination of different types of social support and associations with mental health among U.S. military veterans, a group vulnerable to psychosocial dysfunction. Using a nationally representative sample of 1,004 low-income U.S. veterans, this study examined the prevalence and mental health correlates of emotional, informational/tangible, positive social interaction, and affectionate social support. In the sample, 49-60% of participants perceived the four types of social support "most of the time" with the lowest prevalence being positive social interaction and the h

Perceived neighborhood disorder, community cohesion, and PTSD symptoms among low-income African Americans in an urban health setting.

Studies have established a link between contextual factors, such as neighborhood and community environments, and psychopathology. Although these factors have been shown to affect the expression of symptoms of depression and other disorders, little evidence exists of a link between contextual factors and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The current study tested the relationships among perceived neighborhood disorder (a measure of self-reported perceptions of the physical environment), community cohesion (a measure of perceived social ties), and self-reported PTSD symptoms while controlling

Association of autistic spectrum disorders with dystrophinopathies.

Parents of 85 boys with dystrophinopathies and 51 sibling controls completed the Social Communication Questionnaire, describing child behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders and a rating of parental stress. Twenty-one boys with dystrophinopathies and no siblings received scores above the cut-point for possible autistic spectrum disorders. Mothers of identified children were given detailed interviews using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, and 16 boys (about 19% of the sample) met the criteria for autism spectrum disorders. Significant qualitative abnormalities in reciprocal

Influence of siblings on adaptive behavior trajectories in autism spectrum disorder.

Siblings have the potential to shape the developmental trajectories of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Having siblings has been associated with better social communication skills, less severe non-verbal communication deficits, and improved theory of mind abilities in autism spectrum disorder. This study examined the influence of the presence of a sibling, participant's position in the birth order, gender of the closest-age sibling, and gender match of the sibling dyad on the rate of growth in adaptive skills from ages 9 to 26 years among individuals with autism spectrum disorder and

[Autism: An early neurodevelopmental disorder].

With approximately 67 million individuals affected worldwide, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disorder (United Nations, 2011), with a prevalence estimated to be 1/100. In France ASD affects approximately 600,000 individuals (from childhood to adulthood, half of whom are also mentally retarded), who thus have a major handicap in communication and in adapting to daily life, which leads autism to be recognized as a national public health priority. ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects several domains (i.e., socio-emotional, language, sensori-mo

Parent and Family Well-Being and Associated Risk Factors as Children with Neonatal Seizures Reach Preschool and School-Age: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess parent/family well-being when children with neonatal seizures reach 3-8 years of age and examine factors associated with parent/family well-being. METHODS: One parent per surviving infant in the Neonatal Seizure Registry-II was invited to complete validated surveys annually when children were between 3 and 8 years of age. Three outcomes were examined: (1) parent well-being (anxiety, depression, and quality of life); (2) parent post-traumatic stress symptoms; and (3) impact on the family. We used mixed model regression with random intercepts and guided backward elimination

Alterations in self-related brain networks in autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review of functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) involves alterations in social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Emerging evidence highlights atypical self-awareness as a key factor in ASD-related social impairments. However, the neural mechanisms underlying differences in self-processing remain fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 49 functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) studies (2000-2025) to explore self-related brain networks in ASD, based on the hierarchical self-model comprising interoceptive, exteroceptive,

Sleep correlates of behavior functioning in Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

Pathogenic variants in the cohesin genes, NIPBL and SMC1A, both cause Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS), a rare genetic disorder associated with developmental delay and intellectual disability. This study aimed to compare sleep behaviors across individuals with CdLS caused by a variant in NIPBL or SMC1A, and identify relationships between sleep and behavior functioning. A total of 31 caregivers of individuals with a variant in NIPBL (N = 22) or SMC1A (N = 9) completed questionnaires regarding their child's sleep behaviors, behavior regulation, attention, and autistic features (repetitive behav

Novel treatments in autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There are currently no approved medications for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and only limited data on the management of co-occurring mental health and behavioural symptoms. The purpose of this review is to synthesize recent trials on novel treatments in ASD, with a focus on research trends in the past 2 years. RECENT FINDINGS: No new pharmacologic agents received regulatory approval for use in ASD. Several large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) had negative or ambiguous results (e.g. fluoxetine, oxytocin). A cross-over RCT of an oral cannabinoid s

New uses for antidepressants: social phobia.

Data from recent epidemiologic surveys of community populations indicate that social phobia is a common psychiatric disorder and is associated with substantial functional impairment in a number of patients. Social phobia is also often comorbid with major depression, substance use disorders, and other anxiety disorders. Fortunately, a variety of antidepressant medications have been reported to alleviate the symptoms of social phobia. Controlled studies have shown substantial efficacy for the monoamine oxidase inhibitors phenelzine, moclobemide, and brofaromine and the serotonin selective reupta

Psychedelics and autism spectrum disorder: Mechanistic insights, translational evidence and ethical challenges.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, and sensory processing alterations, frequently accompanied by anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and other psychiatric comorbidities. Despite advances in behavioral and pharmacological interventions, effective treatments for core ASD symptoms remain limited. Psychedelic compounds have recently emerged as potential therapeutic agents in psychiatry because of their ability to modulate serotonerg

Feasibility of a Novel Eye Gaze Shift Task in Autism Assessment: A Pilot Study.

Eye gaze is a fundamental component of social communication and is frequently evaluated during Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments. Although behavioral assessments of ASD frequently include observations of eye gaze, relatively few standardized tasks are designed to specifically elicit gaze-related social communication in response to an ambiguous social cue. This pilot study examined the feasibility and preliminary diagnostic utility of the Eye Gaze Shift Task (EGST). Data from 58 children (29 ASD; 29 non-ASD) who completed the ADOS-2 Module 1 were analyzed. The EGST was administered con
