INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) has an early onset, a high lifetime prevalence, and may be a risk factor for developing other mental disorders. Gaze behaviour is considered an aberrant feature of SAD. Eye-tracking, a novel technology device, enables recording eye movements in real time, making it a direct and objective measure of gaze behaviour. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool for assessment and diagnostic purposes. Developing an objective screening tool based on examination of gaze behaviour in SAD may potentially aid early detection. The objective of this current study i

OBJECTIVE: Emerging adult patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) appear to have a reduced opportunities on learning and exercise, a decreased skill in learning and work, a lower degree of social support due to fear and avoidance of social interaction. This study aimed to assess the level of social avoidance and distress in emerging adults with T1DM, and to explore the correlation between social avoidance and distress and self-management or glycemic control. METHODS: A total of 342 T1DM patients aged 18-30 years old were recruited from 8 tertiary hospitals in Hunan Province from Septembe

Testosterone plays an important role in social threat processing. Recent evidence suggests that testosterone administration has socially anxiolytic effects, but it remains unknown whether this involves early vigilance or later, more sustained, processing-stages. We investigated the acute effects of testosterone administration on social threat processing in 19 female patients with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and 19 healthy controls. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during an emotional Stroop task with subliminally presented faces. Testosterone induced qualitative changes in early

Social interactions play a key role in animal survival and reproduction, shaping mating success, cooperation, competition, and the transmission of information and disease. Across species, the social environment not only influences behavior but also feeds back on physiology, stress responses, and evolutionary trajectories. Despite this central importance, the molecular signals that control how animals sense and respond to one another remain incompletely understood. Drosophila melanogaster provides a powerful model to probe these mechanisms, as it combines a rich repertoire of social behaviors w

The neurocognitive mechanisms underlying language-based implicit modulation of social pain remain poorly understood. To examine the neural dynamics associated with this process, we recorded electroencephalography (EEG) from 39 healthy adults completing a three-condition labeling task: social exclusion labeling, affect labeling, and gender labeling. Results showed that social exclusion labeling produced stronger modulation of social pain-related neural responses than affect labeling, as reflected in reduced N400 and P300 amplitudes, suggesting a more efficient allocation of cognitive resources

Asymptomatic carriage of Staphylococcus aureus is a major risk factor for subsequent clinical infection. Diminishing returns from mitigation efforts emphasize the need to better understand colonization, spread, and transmission of this opportunistic pathogen. While contact with other people presents opportunities for pathogen exposure and transmission, diversity of social connections may be protective against pathogens such as the common cold. This study examined whether social relationship resources, including the amount and diversity of social contacts, are associated with S. aureus coloniza

Recognizing others' social interactions is a crucial human ability. Using simple stimuli, previous studies have shown that social interactions are selectively processed in the superior temporal sulcus (STS), but prior work with movies has suggested that social interactions are processed in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), part of the theory of mind network. It remains unknown to what extent social interaction selectivity is observed in real world stimuli when controlling for other covarying perceptual and social information, such as faces, voices, and theory of mind. The current study util

A recent study indicated a suicide attempt rate of 41 % among trans (e.g., trans, transgender, transexual/transsexual, genderqueer, two-spirit) individuals. Although this rate is alarming, there is a dearth of literature regarding suicide prevention for trans individuals. A vital step in developing suicide prevention models is the identification of protective factors. It was hypothesized that social support from friends, social support from family, optimism, reasons for living, and suicide resilience, which are known to protect cis (non-trans) individuals, also protect trans individuals. A sam

How do gender stereotypes shape prototypes across development? In the current pre-registered study with children ages 3- to 10-years-old and adults (N = 257), participants made judgements about which members of gender categories (boys and girls) and animal categories (for comparison) were the most representative and informative about their kinds, using simplified scales of five category members varying on a stereotypical feature (e.g., girls wearing more or less pink). Young children chose boys and girls with extreme stereotypical features (e.g., the girl in head-to-toe pink) as both represent

There are few studies examining the relationship between psychopathology and positive experiences and traits. Although initial studies suggest persons with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at increased risk for excessive social anxiety, there have been no studies to date evaluating how these conditions might interact to affect positive experiences and traits. Using self-report scales, informant ratings, and experience-sampling methodologies, we examined the association of social anxiety with well-being and character strengths in veterans with and without PTSD. Controlling for PTSD and

Sixty-nine HIV-seropositive women were surveyed with regard to the reproductive counseling they had received, contraception, safer sex practices, pregnancy histories, and pregnancy plans. Of the women surveyed, 84% and 90%, respectively, felt that they had access to the birth control and safer sex methods of their choice. Less than half felt that their physician had adequately counseled them about birth control. Women primarily cited social workers (46.4%) or nurses (34.8%) as the counseling source for birth control and safer sex. When informed about the reduced risk of vertical transmission w

INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is an emerging, often invalidating, syndrome with deep personal, social and psychological implications. While multiple treatment strategies exist, presently none of them can be considered superior to all others.
AREAS COVERED: The aim of this review is to provide the latest information on sertraline (SRT), one of the most important selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) currently used for the pharmacological therapy of SAD. A literature search was carried out with the keywords 'sertraline', 'social anxiety', 'social phobia' and 'clinical tr

The current study investigates an experimental anxiety reduction intervention among a highly socially anxious sample (N=108; n=36 per Condition; 80 women). Using a conditioning paradigm, our goal was to modify implicit social anxiety associations to directly test the premise from cognitive models that biased cognitive processing may be causally related to anxious responding. Participants were trained to preferentially process non-threatening information through repeated pairings of self-relevant stimuli and faces indicating positive social feedback. As expected, participants in this positive t

The neural basis of abnormal processing of phobia-related linguistic cues in individuals suffering from social phobia is unknown, particularly in respect to different task conditions. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, this study investigated brain activation to phobia-related and phobia-unrelated words in 19 socially phobic patients and 18 healthy control subjects (HC) while subjects had to attend either to social meaning or to grammatical category of words (direct or indirect task). During the indirect task, patients, compared to HC, showed an increased activation of

Person-centered approaches to social networks profiles and their association with digital health readiness (DHR) remain underexplored among rural older adults with hypertension. This study aimed to identify latent social networks profiles and examine their independent association with DHR in this population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 576 rural older adults with hypertension by using the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 and the Digital Health Readiness Questionnaire (DHRQ) in Hunan Province, China. Latent profile analysis identified social networks profiles. Multivariable linear

Loneliness is increasingly prevalent among university students, posing substantial challenges to their mental health and academic performance. From a positive psychology perspective, cultivating positive emotional experiences may strengthen psychological resilience and wellbeing, particularly among individuals experiencing loneliness. Although virtual learning assistants (VLAs) are widely used in higher education, prior research has focused primarily on their functionality and learning outcomes, leaving their emotional effects, underlying mechanisms, and boundary conditions insufficiently unde

OBJECTIVE: The temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) is thought to play a key role in human social behavior, however, there is currently no consensus on which aspects of social behavior are under TPJ control. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the TPJ causally underlies behaviors that require distinguishing between one's own and others' mental perspectives by conducting a meta-analysis of brain stimulation studies modulating TPJ activation during social cognition (94 papers with 160 effect sizes from 4073 participants).
RESULTS: Our meta-analysis revealed that stimulation of the TPJ shows small-to

Stress responses in humans can be attenuated by exogenous oxytocin administration, and these stress-buffering properties may be moderated by social factors. Yet, the influence of acute stressors on circulating endogenous oxytocin levels have been inconsistent, and limited information is available concerning the influence of social support in moderating this relationship. In the current investigation, undergraduate women (N = 67) were assessed in the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) with either social support available from a close female friend or no social support being available.
