SWOT analysis of the models used by social enterprises in scaling effective refractive error coverage to achieve the 2030 in SIGHT in Kenya.

Uncorrected refractive error has predominantly been delivered through commercial entrepreneurship in Kenya. However, to achieve the 2030 IN SIGHT, integration of other forms of entrepreneurship such as the social entrepreneurship is desirable to supplement the efforts of the dominant commercial entrepreneurship. Therefore, this study intended to undertake a SWOT analysis of the current models used by social enterprises in scaling effective refractive error coverage to achieve the 2030 IN SIGHT in Kenya. A review of the seven national strategic plans for eye health in Kenya was undertaken to ge

The impact of group membership on collaborative learning with wikis.

The social web stimulates learning through collaboration. However, information in the social web is often associated with information about its author. Based on previous evidence that ingroup information is preferred to outgroup information, the current research investigates whether group memberships of wiki authors affect learning. In an experimental study, we manipulated the group memberships (ingroup vs. outgroup) of wiki authors by using nicknames. The designated group memberships (being fans of a soccer team or not) were completely irrelevant for the domain of the wiki (the medical disord

Experiences of mHealth use in head and neck cancer care: a thematic synthesis guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is associated with significant symptom burdens and functional impairments that may hinder sustained engagement with mobile health (mHealth). Despite its potential for symptom monitoring and rehabilitation, factors driving mHealth adoption and sustained integration into routine care remain poorly understood. Existing qualitative evidence capturing patient, caregiver, and clinician perspectives remains fragmented. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on experiences of mHealth use in HNC care and to elucidate factors shaping acce

Translating Life Course Theory to clinical practice to address health disparities.

Life Course Theory (LCT) is a framework that explains health and disease across populations and over time and in a powerful way, conceptualizes health and health disparities to guide improvements. It suggests a need to change priorities and paradigms in our healthcare delivery system. In "Rethinking Maternal and Child Health: The Life Course Model as an Organizing Framework," Fine and Kotelchuck identify three areas of rethinking that have relevance to clinical care: (1) recognition of context and the "whole-person, whole-family, whole-community systems approach;" (2) longitudinal approach wit

Psychosocial aspects of osteogenesis imperfecta: an update.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inherited disorder in which affected individuals are stigmatized by virtue of physical differences from their peers. The extent to which these differences alter life style depend on the severity of the disorder, its natural history, the extent to which it affects social integration, the effect on physical appearance, and the presence of other affected family members. Some of these factors may adversely influence the ability of affected individuals to effectively adjust to their social and work environment and recognition of these factors may aid individuals a…

Partnership and Cognitive Aging in Europe: Mediating Factors and Social Stratification.

OBJECTIVES: Living in a partnership has been shown to benefit later life health in general and decrease the risk of cognitive impairment. Few studies have, however, examined whether different types of partnership transitions also differ with respect to their impact on cognitive trajectories, and whether financial resources, healthy behaviors, cognitive stimulation, and social integration can explain these differences. METHODS: Data came from six waves of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, which is a representative panel for the population aged 50 years or older, and were c…

A scoping review of "nursing-technology collaboration" in home-based rehabilitation for the elderly under the long-term care insurance system.

BACKGROUND: Under the long-term care insurance system, home-based rehabilitation is a key service model for addressing population aging, but it faces the dual challenges of a shortage of care workers and increasingly complex service needs. The introduction of emerging tools, such as digital health technologies and social assistive robots, has opened up new possibilities for home-based rehabilitation. However, whether technology can truly improve care outcomes depends on the collaborative working model between nurses and technology-known as "nurse-technology collaboration." There is currently a

Electrophysiological and Behavioral Outcomes of Berard Auditory Integration Training (AIT) in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder of childhood characterized by deficits in social interaction, language, and stereotyped behaviors along with a restricted range of interests. It is further marked by an inability to perceive and respond to social and emotional signals in a typical manner. This might due to the functional disconnectivity of networks important for specific aspects of social cognition and behavioral control resulting in deficits of sensory information integration. According to several recent theories sensory processing and integration abnormalities may play an importan

Social and emotional learning in the cerebellum.

The posterior cerebellum has a critical role in human social and emotional learning. Three systems and related neural networks support this cerebellar function: a biological action observation system as part of an extended sensorimotor integration network, a mentalizing system for understanding a person's mental and emotional state subserved by a mentalizing network, and a limbic network supporting core emotional (dis)pleasure and arousal processes. In this Review, I describe how these systems and networks support social and emotional learning via functional reciprocal connections initiating a

Development of MPFC function mediates shifts in self-protective behavior provoked by social feedback.

How do people protect themselves in response to negative social feedback from others? How does such a self-protective system develop and affect social decisions? Here, using a novel reciprocal artwork evaluation task, we demonstrate that youths show self-protective bias based on current negative social evaluation, whereas into early adulthood, individuals show self-protective bias based on accumulated evidence of negative social evaluation. While the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) mediates self-defensive behavior based on both current and accumulated feedback, the rostromedial prefront

Managing the Concealable Stigma of Criminal Justice System Involvement: A Longitudinal Examination of Anticipated Stigma, Social Withdrawal, and Post-Release Adjustment.

People with concealable stigmatized identities, such as a criminal record, often anticipate stigma from others. Anticipated stigma is thought to cause withdrawal from situations in which there is the potential for discrimination, which then negatively impacts behavior and functioning. This may have implications for offenders reentering the community, possibly hindering community integration and encouraging maladaptive behavior postrelease. Drawing upon a sample of 197 male jail inmates, we examine a theoretical model in which anticipated stigma during incarceration predicts behavioral outcomes

Social interaction in borderline personality disorder.

Studies on natural long-term course of borderline personality disorder (BPD) as well as on treatment outcome suggest that social integration remains seriously unsatisfactory in the majority of the subjects concerned. Identification of typical borderline problems in social interaction should facilitate both, treatment development and elucidation of the related neuropsychological mechanisms and underpinnings. This review focuses on the experimental investigation of three core domains of social interaction: social affiliation, cooperation and hostility. Data converge, that patients meeting criter…

[Palliative Care - not just for the final phase. A rewiev of evidence].

Palliative Care - not just for the final phase. A rewiev of evidence Abstract. Already in early stages of their disease, patients with incurable, advanced cancer and non-cancer disease suffer from a range of limitations of their quality of life due to symptoms (i. e. pain, dyspnoea) or psychical, social or spiritual problems. Palliative Care aims to maintain the patients' quality of life and is applicable already early in the disease trajectory and not only at the end of life. As providers of general (basic) palliative care, all health care providers from all disciplines should therefore hold

Circumferential abdominoplasty for sequential treatment after morbid obesity.

BACKGROUND: The severely obese patient, after considerable loss of weight, has large remaining skin folds. Classic transverse abdominoplasties leave bulges in the flanks. This article presents an alternative procedure, circumferential abdominoplasty, which involves the perimeter of the abdomen. METHODS: Average age of the patients was 39.5 years, consisting of 10 females and two males. Incisions were made like those of the classic transverse abdominoplasty, but were extended dorsally without tension on the suture-line. RESULTS: Pre and postoperative aspects revealed the huge impact achieved
