Multidimensional Social Interaction and School Refusal Tendency Among Elementary and Junior High School Students: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study with an Exploratory Indirect-Association Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: School refusal tendency is an important school adaptation issue, but its upstream psychosocial correlates remain insufficiently understood. We examined whether baseline multidimensional social interaction was prospectively associated with later school refusal tendency and whether an exploratory statistical indirect association was observed through psychological and behavioral difficulties. METHODS: This three-year longitudinal observational study included 314 students in grades 5-9 aged ≥12 years at baseline in 2020 and followed through 2023. Social interaction was asse…

An Explorative Study of Atypical Social Interaction Styles in Adult Men with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Men with Personality Disorders and Men from the General Population.

Different atypical social interaction styles (SISs) were defined and tested in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Whether these styles can also be distinguished in adults with ASD has not yet been explored. In men with ASD, men with personality disorder (PD), and men from the general population (N = 90), aged 18-65 years, we tested which SISs can be distinguished and how they relate to the presence of PD traits. We found a significant distinction in allocation to atypical SISs between the three groups. This study shows the presence of atypical SISs in adults with ASD…

Impairment in social interaction and hippocampal long-term potentiation at perforant pathway-dentate gyrus synapses in a prenatal valproic acid-induced rat model of autism.

It is well established that prenatal valproic acid exposure in rats leads to autism-like behaviours and social deficits. Long-term potentiation changes in the brain have been proposed as a potential mechanism in the development of autistic behaviour. However, there are controversies regarding the effect of in utero valproic acid exposure on long-term potentiation. This study examined the social interaction and long-term potentiation induction in perforant pathway-dentate gyrus synapses in male offspring of a rat model of autism induced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid. On Embryonic Day 12…

Longitudinal co-development of social interaction, physical frailty, and subjective cognitive decline among community-dwelling older adults in Japan: a six-year parallel growth study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging requires community-based approaches to identify multidomain risk patterns before severe disability or clinical cognitive impairment develops. Although social interaction, physical frailty, and subjective cognitive decline are relevant to healthy aging, their parallel longitudinal trajectories remain insufficiently characterized in community-dwelling older adults. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the six-year co-development of social interaction, screening-defined physical frailty, and screening-defined subjective cognitive decline among community-dwelling older adul…

Mediating role of fruit and vegetable intake and social interaction between oral function and mental health in older adults aged ≥75 years: The SONIC study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the association between oral function and mental health status in older adults and to determine the potential mediating roles of fruit and vegetable intake and social interaction. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 478 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥75 years in Japan. Oral functions (occlusal force, masticatory performance, tongue pressure, tongue-lip motor function, and swallowing function), mental health status, dietary assessment, frequency of outings and interactions with others, and the following confounders were evaluated: educationa…

Randomized Controlled Trial of Adjunctive Social Cognition and Interaction Training, Adjunctive Therapeutic Alliance Focused Therapy, and Treatment As Usual Among Persons With Serious Mental Illness.

As one of the areas of greatest concern for people with serious mental illness (SMI) are unmet social needs, psychosocial interventions have been developed to address them. The current study utilized a randomized controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of social cognition and interaction training (SCIT) versus a therapeutic alliance focused theraphy (TAFT) versus a treatment-as-usual (TAU) control group on social functioning and quality of life as primary outcomes and social cognition variables as secondary outcomes. Sixty-three persons between the ages of 24 and 69 years with SMI (41 me

Enhancing Social Interaction in Depression (SIDE study): protocol of a randomised controlled trial on the effects of a Cognitively Based Compassion Training (CBCT) for couples.

INTRODUCTION: Positive social interactions (PSIs) and stable relationships can exert substantial benefits on health. However, patients suffering from depression benefit less from these health-promoting effects. Moreover, relationship quality and even partners' health has been found to be negatively affected by depressive symptomatology, which may result in overall impairments in social functioning of a romantic couple. Psychobiological research indicates that these impairments may be accompanied by a maladaptive regulation of the patient's neuroendocrine response to external stressors. Concern…

Psychological dynamics and adaptive processes of negative online social interactions among university students: a qualitative study in higher education digital environments.

OBJECTIVE: As digital platforms increasingly shape university students' learning, social interactions, and identity construction, negative online social interactions have become important experiences in connected digital environments. Existing research has mainly examined specific negative online behaviors, such as cyberbullying and online exclusion, and their psychological consequences, while paying less attention to how students interpret and adapt to negative interactions embedded in everyday digital life. Drawing on a cyberpsychological perspective, this study explores the dynamic psycholo…

When traits meet the moment: State and perceived partner motivations interact with approach-avoidance temperament to predict social preferences in daily life.

Social interactions are influenced by personality traits such as approach-avoidance motives. However, it remains unclear how traits, states, and interpersonal perceptions interact to shape everyday social experiences - and for whom their interactions are most consequential. Addressing this gap is critical for advancing personality-in-context models and identifying mechanisms underlying deficits in interpersonal functioning. A two-week Ecological Momentary Assessment was conducted with 136 participants (N = 3,991 social interactions), who reported on motivational states, partner perceptions, an…

Morning cortisol levels and quality of social interactions across the transition to school predict the development of children's anxious and depressive symptoms in first grade.

Previous studies spanning the transition from preschool to school (kindergarten) revealed individual differences in children's stress response, measured by cortisol concentrations. However, whether these represented adaptive cortisol concentration patterns or a risk factor for maladaptation remained unclear because very few studies examined functional correlates of cortisol changes, such as anxious or depressive symptoms. Furthermore, prior research has suggested that social interactions may play a significant role in this association since sensitive stress responses patterns might interact wi…

Exploring the Presence of Humanoid Social Robots at Home and Capturing Human-Robot Interactions with Older Adults: Experiences from Four Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: Social robots have the potential to bring benefits to aged care. However, it is uncertain whether placing these robots in older people's home is acceptable and whether human-robot interactions would occur or not. METHODS: Four case studies were conducted to understand the experiences of older adults and family caregivers when humanoid social robot Ka Ka was placed in homes for two weeks. RESULTS: Four older adults and three family caregivers were involved. Older adults interacted with the social robot Ka Ka every day during the study period. 'Talking to Ka Ka', 'listening to musi

Repeated Social Defeat Exaggerates Fibrin-Rich Clot Formation by Enhancing Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation via Platelet-Neutrophil Interactions.

Depression is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have previously shown that repeated social defeat (RSD) exaggerates atherosclerosis development by enhancing neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. In this study, we investigated the impact of RSD on arterial thrombosis. Eight-week-old male wild-type mice (C57BL/6J) were exposed to RSD by housing with larger CD-1 mice in a shared home cage. They were subjected to vigorous physical contact daily for 10 consecutive days. After confirming depression-like behaviors, mice underwent FeCl3-induced carotid arterial i

The Effects of Virtual Reality Treatment on Prefrontal Cortex Activity in Patients With Social Anxiety Disorder: Participatory and Interactive Virtual Reality Treatment Study.

BACKGROUND: Attempts to use virtual reality (VR) as a treatment for various psychiatric disorders have been made recently, and many researchers have identified the effects of VR in psychiatric disorders. Studies have reported that VR therapy is effective in social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, there is no prior study on the neural correlates of VR therapy in patients with SAD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to find the neural correlates of VR therapy by evaluating the treatment effectiveness of VR in patients with SAD using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Kappa opioid receptor antagonism and chronic antidepressant treatment have beneficial activities on social interactions and grooming deficits during heroin abstinence.

Addiction is a chronic brain disorder that progressively invades all aspects of personal life. Accordingly, addiction to opiates severely impairs interpersonal relationships, and the resulting social isolation strongly contributes to the severity and chronicity of the disease. Uncovering new therapeutic strategies that address this aspect of addiction is therefore of great clinical relevance. We recently established a mouse model of heroin addiction in which, following chronic heroin exposure, 'abstinent' mice progressively develop a strong and long-lasting social avoidance phenotype. Here, we

Pushed to the margins and pushing back: a case study of one adult's reflections on social interactions after a traumatic brain injury sustained as an adolescent.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide chronic health problem. Current empirical approaches to defining factors that contribute to a meaningful life after TBI have been limited to the biomedical perspective. Such a limited paradigm fails to address how people with TBI find meaning and act on and are acted on by the world in which they live. Between 2005 and 2007 an in-depth qualitative case study was conducted. The primary data source was a man's retrospective journal writings about his life after sustaining a severe TBI. The qualitative perspective of symbolic interactionism framed this

Taenia solium: the complex interactions, of biological, social, geographical and commercial factors, involved in the transmission dynamics of pig cysticercosis in highly endemic areas.

If a programme for the control of pig cysticercosis is to be effective it has to be based on good data on the local epidemiology of Taenia solium. In 2002-2003, in a cross-sectional study of pig cysticercosis in the Mexican state of Morelos, 1747 pigs that had been born and reared in rural areas of the state were checked for T. solium infection by tongue inspection. The prevalence of cysticercosis in the pigs was found to vary from 0% to 30% according to the municipality from which the pigs came. Although prevalence appeared to be unaffected by the socio-economic status of the municipality, it

Quality over quantity: association between autistic traits and daily-life social interactions in adolescents and young adults from the TwinssCan cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Autistic traits (ATs) are associated with difficulties in social functioning, but their impact on the quantity and the quality of daily-life social interactions is not yet fully understood. Hereby, we examined the relationship between AT and daily-life social interactions in adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Data were derived from the TwinssCan cohort (N = 593). ATs were assessed using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), while the quantity and the quality of daily-life social interactions were evaluated using the Experience Sampling Methodology. Multilevel regressions were perf…

Longitudinal Analyses of Social Interactions by Neighborhood Walkability, Marital Status, Age, and Differential Effects of a Global Public Health Emergency by Race and Ethnicity.

We sought to identify factors associated with social interactions, critical to ameliorating social isolation, while also considering the COVID-19 timeline. Surveys (online, Texas, n = 925) asked about activities in a typical week immediately prior to and within the most recent pandemic, allowing for a dual benefit of providing findings unrelated to the pandemic that may be more relevant to current times, but also to provide insights into pandemic-related changes in social isolation. The major outcome of interest was social interaction with neighbors (SIWN). Longitudinal analyses were employed …

The Interactive Effects of eHealth Literacy and Mental Health Literacy on Social Media Addiction and Depression-Anxiety-Stress in Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Chinese adolescents are navigating a complex digital environment amidst a growing mental health crisis. While health literacy is recognized as protective, previous research has primarily examined eHealth literacy (eHL) and mental health literacy (MHL) in isolation, leaving their synergistic effects and the integrative mechanism of mental eHealth literacy (MeHL) on social media addiction (SMA) and depression-anxiety-stress (DASS) largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how eHL and MHL work through MeHL to reduce SMA and DASS in adolescents. We specifically te
